WoW Life Lesson #33 - It’s Your Game, Do What You Want To Do

When I started playing WoW years ago, one of the first things I did, without knowing much about the game, was get a fishing pole and started fishing in Elwynn Forest. Within a few casts, I fished up a 15 pound fish that I could hold and slap people with it. It was so funny. I also caught a few fish that I used to level up cooking. I remember thinking that was a cool part of the game, fishing and cooking, and that I'd do that along with all the other stuff there was to do in the game.

Later I told a friend about how I liked the fishing aspect of the game and he said he hoped I was a glutton for punishment.

What? Well evidently he said that fishing was the most boring thing in the game and that it wasn't worth the time or effort.

Well that wasn't a very hopeful thought, but I really didn't care. It was fun to fish and make receipes. There was loads of downtime between instances and raids, and the foods gave me buffs so I kept doing it.

Then TBC came out and fishing got really lucrative. I can't tell you how many Furious Crawdads I sold. And now with the WotLK, selling Pygmy Suckerfish has kept me in gold and gear that I hardly do any dailies.

The point is that in the game I decided what I liked and I kept doing it because I liked it. I did what I wanted to do and I had fun and made a big profit. Of course I listen to advice from some people about where to fish, how to fish better, and where to get the best recipes, but that all helped me have more fun in the game.

Now in RL do you know what I do? I get paid to do this. Write here. And produce and direct Project Lore. Interesting isn't it? I did what I liked, asked people how I could be better, followed my intuition and got probably one of the oddest jobs on this planet.

And in RL, it's your game. So do what you want to do.

If you want to be a game programmer, do it. If you want to be a florist, do it. If you want to stare at a screen of numbers, betting on the market, then do it.

Whatever it is, do it. Please. Ask around and follow your fun. Do it for a career or as a hobby or anywhere in between. Whatever it is, it's your game.

Because when you do what you like, it makes the whole game that much more fun.

About of my first days of wow, I was so sure that the druid is the best class, I nerfed it about 2 years until a rogue managed to beat me in gurubashi arena... I was shocked, so I never played wow since than. Now I reactivated my account with my T3 geared feral druid, I didn't even consider it to lvl it, so I rolled a rogue, lvled till level 55, delete the druid and start fresh with the might Death Knight.

RL lesson: Never nerf a job, a hobby, a game or anything else, because you might going to hate it.

ERSB is right about game experience !!!!!!!

Great article, and a fantastic way to start the new year

I like mountain climbing and exploring areas of Azeroth that I'm not supposed to be able to reach. Ironforge Airport? Been there...who hasn't? ...but going from Swamp of Sorrows to Redridge? I can do that even though there's no road...and I'm sure not many people have done it. Before Stormwind Harbor existed, I went from Westfall to Wetlands just to see what was along the way. (Just one cabin. I think it's still there with WotLK, but haven't checked.)

There's no achievement, no profession, and usually no advantage...but I like it.

I know this is going to sound so totally n00bish but.....you really got to the airport? WTF?!?!?! I've been up and down that range trying to get there since the first time I flew over it. Glad to know that others like me strive to do what seems impossible. Gladder (is that a word? =P) to know that it can be done. Sad to think of how I'm going to be driven back there to do it. Ugh.

I'm a total nerd and I just really love riding around on my horse. I might stop and help people, or do a little mining, but that's part of why I enjoy this game. Killing the crap out of things is fun too.

My favorite thing in this game... certainly isnt my proffesion... i hated farming for ore for cash but when my mining finaly caught up with my level it became fun! I now like to run around and look for ore (although for some reason i still hate farming and selling low level ore..) and sundenly blacksmithing has become fun to me too! But the thing i love doing the most is... tanking. I just love haveing everything attack me and saving my team mates from death it just makes me feel like im doing good. Very insperational story by the way, made me feel good.

Amen!
If we all followed our "fun" the world would be a much better place I think. :)

January 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDorky

PatrickD!

I'm totally the same way!

I've been almost everywhere in the game because ever since NES i've always loved going places few people will ever see up close.

I've gone to IF airport, Waterfalls between Burning Steppes and Elwynn. All these great places and love doing it. The fun is better than any achievement or title.

I love to do what I love and I will keep on doin it!

Man, I come to this site all the time, and I watch all the videos and usually skip over the blogs. I just started reading a few and I came across this one and then it hit me....
The game isn't about leveling, or making loads and loads of money and working your butt off, its about doing what you want, when you want in a different world. Most people wouldn't think that and I know that my friends don't, they nag me all the time about not leveling fast enough, and they have even offered to level my character for me.
I know what the game is about now, this post really helped. Keep up these kind of "Speaches" SaintGermain, they really do help people look at the game and their lives differently.

Me, I like healing... My favorite thing to do is be in a Instance and save Everybody. Without a healer the Group falls. My favorite Passtime is probably collecting Primals. Even the new Primal like items in WOTLK came i still enjoyed collecting these primals because there easy to get and they seem kind of cool. Outland is My home, because there is so many Lores and storys is The Burning Crusade. But when things change like WOTLK brang a big amount of armor, items, and a new prof. I could farm 20 [Primal Mana] and still make it seem like those 4 Hours was fun and not boring. So people of WoW you dont always have to do what the "End Game' players say. Like Saintgermain said its your game!

Fishing was very relaxing, finding a quiet spot somewhere in azeroth and fishing for hours + I love fishing IRL ^_^
Besides that Wow got really boring after TBC release, and it totally failed when WoTLK was released.

Anyway, just don't be like me when I started playing WoW. Running to Orgrimmar as a Orc Warrior and thinking that the city was full of enemies and run back out to find out weeks later it was my main city. meh.

lol

So a few comments above, my friend Yumbibi said that this game is more about the stuff you want to do. If you enjoy leveling and getting all epics and rare mounts and junk, that's fine, but soloing is really boring for me. Up to level 39, me and Yumbibi leveled together and those were the best times I've had in WoW. Learning fishing in Org we would make it so much for fun by climbing in trees, climbing on rocks, going in places that look funny, running all the way around the Valley of Honor just to jump to one place were more fun then me soloing on my druid or doing instances with people I don't really care about.
The most fun times me and Yumbibi have are when we screw around. Hide and go seek is probably one of the things you'll find us doing most. This game isnt about showing off your awesomeness (not that there is anything wrong with that) its about doing what you like.

yay! ignore this post....

Yes! It's so rare to see someone say that. I love fishing and such in the game, used to be the 'buff-food supplier' for all my friends.

OT question: St. Germaine from the Chelsea Quinn Yarbro books? Because I read them years back and still think they rock.

I totally LOVE this article! I'm big on helping folks myself regardless of what others may say or think.

One of the primary aspects of my guild since it's inception (coming up on 3 yrs!) has been giving the youngsters that play this game a safe haven and creating a friendly atmosphere for all involved. Some have stayed, some have moved on and /farewell and GL to those.

One thing has remained constant though: I will always be around to help my guildies and the ones that have since moved on for reasons of their own will always be around as true friends and even available to help yours truly!

Fishing, Farming, Dailies, Helping, it's not always what you do or even how you do it sometimes..but what really, truly counts is WHY you do what you do regardless of the naysayers!
