Fond Memories: Molten Core and Ragnaros

Remember Bubble Hearthing With The Living Bomb Debuff? With Wrath of the Lich King's first content patch looming on the horizon, I thought it would be a good idea to take a stroll down memory lane.  Molten Core was the only 40-man raid instance when World of Warcraft launched in 2004.  The lengthy instance was considered unbeatable for quite some time, with most servers leaving Ragnaros untouched until well after Onyxia - who was added later on via a patch - was killed.  The depths of Blackrock Spire held 9 bosses, tons of trash mobs, quick respawn times, diverse encounters and eons for early guilds to get to know each other.  All these attributes lead to intense battles, failure, drama, success, full Tier 1 sets, Tier 2 pants and additional drama.  I'll never forget it.

When my guild began running Molten Core, I was in my last stretch of leveling.  Thanks to a hefty load of work from my pre-Junior year at Drexel, I had already missed the server first Onyxia kill and vowed not to miss any other.  I failed at participating, but managed to view the deaths of Lucifron and Magmadar from my roommate's screen.  The following day I was invited for the guilds second round of attempts at Gehennes.  After four years, I can't recall how long it took us to down the Flamewalker and his guards, but it was the first time I had been a part of a raid kill in an MMORPG.

This Is Your Brain On Rags. Any Questions?

I poured hours upon hours into the instance, for the guild and for my Tier 2 pants.  Through all of the memories - the lava swimming druids, Aqual Quintessence smashing, Core Hound looting, suicide bombing, giant stomping, lava leaps of faith - nothing stands out in my mind as much as my first glance at the firelord himself, Ragnaros.  Not only was his model incredibly awesome and original, but he was freaking GINORMOUS.  "Surely, he must be nerfed by Lucifron before the fight," I thought to myself.  No, not at all.  The shock I experienced at his first site has never left me, and as of yet, has never been topped in a virtual world.

It took All That Remains (long defunct) weeks to down Ragnaros, mainly due to many members not having the required Fire Resistance gear/Stamina (thank god those fights are gone).  It became so bad that Officers decided to only accept the members with the highest FR sets to the raid.  The new rule forced many of us to spend stupids amounts of time and gold one that one extra point of FR.  The price for rings with FR stats went through the roof, and we even began heading to UBRS to steal the FR buffs.  This was at a time when 1000 gold was Bill Gates rich.  The guild's commodore, dedication and expertise was never at a higher point than the end of Molten Core, and we needed all of it. When Ragnaros finally sank into his relatively small hitbox for the last time, everyone tossed up virtual high fives via Ventrilo, and sang Kumbaya as his hammer fell to the ground.

Weeks, possibly months passed before SolidSamm finally got his T2 pants, and with Blackwing Lair launching shortly after, it was perfect timing.  My Tyr's Hand days were an ends to a means, my days spent in Molten Core and the jaw-dropping sight of Ragnaros were simply an experience.  One that I will never forget, but hopefully a memory that is eventually one-upped.  Hell, I still don my MC items including my Perdition's Blade from time to time.

I have always wondered one thing.  For those of you that were big PvEers in earlier MMORPGs, did Ragnaros still manage to floor you?  Or was it more old hat because you have been downing gigantic dragons for so long?  If you are new to World of Warcraft, then I suggest you try to run a Molten Core on the weekend, if not for the two achievements, then just so you can experience his impact.  It can be done quickly and easily at level 80 with only a handful of players.

Hey, look what I found!

i never got to do any raids in vanilla wow, first run was in the wotlk expansion so things went pretty easy with a raid almost full of 80´s.
it was so awesome to experience the death of the fire lord from a main tanks view.
and grats to everyone that managed to beat this monster at 60

When you say a "handful" of level 80's, how many do you mean exactly?

I was levelling my character through the late 40s when Burning Crusade came out so unfortunately there was a lack of interest in Old World raids and I had to wait till Karazhan for my first raiding experience. It might not be as awe-inspiring as Molten Core but it was the most challenging thing I did since I started playing the game. It was a memorable night indeed and I would like to think everyone's first raid encounter was as entertaining as mine was.

I still want to have a go at MC, given the chance. There are a few people I know who still do classic raids (with level 60s to boot) so I'm trying to get my priest to 60 and hopefully join the fun.

I started raiding when BWL first came out, so I got to skip the growing pains of learning Rag et all. I was, however, a part of guild firsts for BWL through Naxxramas and pre BC raiding is still the highpoint of this entire game for me.

It was phenomenal.

Ye WoW was my first mmorpg, and MC was my first raid instance. 40 people on your screen, wiping (or at least try to run out when the leader finally gave the green light to flee!) on first 2 mobs, seeing the legendary drop for thunderfury and roll 2 with my warrior, never ever seen the felheart slippers drop for my warlock.... MC was awesome and ragnaros was a total pain but once he did go down 40 people went bzrk (which was also the case with nefarian etc). Never ever had the same feeling again after the launch of TBC, all wayyyy too easy.

MC is still the BOMB!! Unfortunately those playing after bc came out will never know the pain and joy of not only getting 40 people together, but the waiting around for every1 to show up, trying to grab people to fillup places, there where no LFG or summoning stones, but the joy of when a boss when down after many many hours of trying.

It showed who was a true raider, and not just someone comming for what loot they could get. Also i remember some on the most memorable vent discussions while doing mc.

Luckily i, and my guild, do go back into mc every now and then and it still has the something that the other instances don't

ya its kinda hard getting people together to do MC nowadays even lvl 80s it kinda sucks ive been playing since the games been out but never got a chara to 60 pre tbc due to not having my own account so i never got to run it so it kinda sucks now!!

Molten core was the most amazing experience I have had in wow thus far. I still remember all those fights and the endless wipes. It really is something good that has died in wow now, I wish bliz would bring back the 40 man raid in some form.

i was around during the early WoW days but not as an active player. i would watch over my sisters shoulder and gaze in awe at the amazing fire explosions on the screen, but could never find the time to level my huntard past 40. halfway through bc i moved in with my sister and decided it was time to get serious. i leveled a druid and mage to 70 and raided in bc. i was able to go back and do most of the pre bc dungeons but none of the raids. now tht im 80 iv been going back with my sister and two other guildies and rining all the old school raids we just 4 manned bwl with no healer lol but we havnt done rag yet. actually thats scheduled for tonight, lol. so we're gonna hav a blast.
thanks for the blog. makes me happy, lol.

I remember back in the day. I had just hit 60 a few days/weeks ago and there was a MC pug just starting so i thought what the hell. So i got in there and was nervous. I was probably the worst geared out of everyone. i did get a new gun, fist wep, and bracers out of the run though. aswell as downing Ragnaros (which i dont have the credit for in the achievements list :() but these were fun times, and this was the only 40 man raid that i ever did.

I did this at 60 and it was awesome.
When the achievements came about I didn't get credit.
At 80 myself and 6 other guildies didn't have any problems clearing it for the achievement.
We just had to get them attunded.

I was present for our guild's first ragnaros kill and it was epic. I might even still have a screen shot of it on my gaming PC. I still have all the fire gear I had to amass to be a rogue and not get chared like 2 seconds in (229 unbuffed FR FTW)

MC is where I also got my first purples and blew a ton of DKP on my rogue shoulders just because of the color I think.

My wife and I just are returning to the game after a nearly 3 year absence. 2 expansion packs and 2 kids later the game is completly different. Still super enjoyable but I really miss the level 60 rading. Our server Uldum seems to be empty in all the lower level zones and all the low level instances seem to have disapeared.

A group of officers from our guild got together on a boring sunday just this week and we 6-manned Rag for the achievement. All the way we couldn't believe some of the fights were even possible for a 40-man group in level 60 gear. How did you deal with all the respawning dogs on the first boss anyway???

hey Koopa, was this the ATR from Magtheridon server?

if so, I was in Defiance, then Pain Train, then Unforgiven, so i almost definitly saw you around in our PvE struggles to be the first to get server kills such as Nef.

I've been doing the old school raids and instances a lot lately (not so old school but still; I managed to down Illidan for the very first time last sunday and best of all I managed to get the T6 token from him aswell :P) Ragnaros was a very fun experience even though it was easy (and even if it's easy, it doesn't make it any less fun imho)

great post lol i remeber wearing all sorts of crappie leather and cloth items just for the extra fire res engineering googles dracionan deflector from ubrs them were the days. still never got my final piece of lawbringer :(

what server did you play on? because we had an "All That Remains" guild on Frostmourne oceanic. not sure if its still around after all thesse years. i've since transferred to Dreadmaul

I've tried to do MC before, but it was a pathetic try. None of us were attuned so, of course, we had to go through BRD to get to the entrance. We did the quest to get attuned at least.

As for what happened when we got in there, wipe wipe wipe wipe wipe wipe. We tried to five man it with the standard 1 tank, 1 heal, 3 DPS. We got to the first boss but, man, i don't know what happened. we just couldn't burn him down. I'd love to try again sometime though.

My brother and I two manned this about a month ago at lvl 80. I was on my ret pally, and he was on his disc holy priest. Though i would recommend bringing a de-curser.

Molten Core was my first raid instance in an MMO. I played Everquest before WOW, but never got that serious about it.

MC was truly epic at the time. I was there for my guild's first Ragnaros kill, and nothing yet has matched that explosion of joy at FINALLY killing that final boss. On the down side, the ridiculous amount of trash mobs and fairly quick respawn times (remember, you're dealing with 40 people here, and getting them to move as one and not AFK) made for a long process while learning it all. Eventually we got it down to a managable time.

I went on to clear BWL, AQ40 and almost Naxx pre-BC (got Sapphiron to 52%)... along with the green world dragons and Onyxia at various times. Although I raided after BC a bit (I was there for our guild's first Magtheridon kill and early Karazhan and Gruul clears), it wasn't really the same. Raids were still challenging (pre-nerfs), but they didn't match the scale of earlier content.

The highlight of my "raiding career" was original Naxx... I loved that instance.

I played Pre-BC, but i started a little to late, although i did watch my brother do MC. never actually saw Rag until a couple of weeks ago, me, a lvl 80 Death Knight in DPS gear, and a friend, a resto druid, solo'd all of MC and when we got to rag, i saw him for the first time, i was tempted to hearth out =P lol but he is so awesome, we got him down to just under 100k health, before the healer failed and i died =P, we were sad the entire time too though, just because, i remember the 40 mans whiping on trash, and we 2 manned it all =( except rag, although we were glad he still put up some sort of fight lol

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to raid with a very talented group of players. Deus Vox (Laughing Skull) is still doing very well in regards to world's fastest kills. Here is my opinion of the most incredible boss kills I ever got to experience. My top 5:

5) 4 Horseman
4) C'Thun
3) Twin Emps
2) Nefarian
1) Ragnaros

Rag is easily the most rewarding in regards to hype and challenge. Getting all of that fire resist was such a feat at the time. Plus the fight was designed to keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. You could wipe at the blink of an eye.

Oh, and getting Sulfuras, Hand of Rangaros probably helped boost my excitement too. ;)
