Jewelcrafting Nerf: Dragon's Eyes Will No Longer Be Prismatic

This news makes me a sad panda. Currently, Jewelcrafters are able to cut Dragon's Eyes for themselves which give higher stats than any other currently available gems. For example a Bright Dragon's Eye gives +54 attack power, 22 more than the Bright Scarlet Ruby. With a maximum of three socketed in equipped gear, this gives Jewelcrafters 66 extra attack power (or the equivalent in other stats). That's on par with most other professions. For example, Enchanting adds 32 attack power to each ring, or 64 total. Alchemists get added effect from elixirs and flasks, so a Flask of Endless Rage gives 244 attack power to an alchemist instead of the 180 it normally gives (a bonus of 64).
The difference is in the prismatics. This quality of the Dragon's Eye gems allow jewelcrafters to activate metagems without sacrificing a single stat. It also allows them to gain socket bonuses that they normally wouldn't get. Bornakk just announced an upcoming change that will remove that feature once the next major content patch lands (presumably patch 3.2):
Using me as an example, Dragon's Eyes being prismatic mean I was able to gem for an extra 66 attack power, gained three socket bonuses of 12, 8, and 8 attack power, and replaced a blue gem that had 12 stamina (something I don't want to gem for in PvE) with a gem that gives a pure stat. The total bonus from switching to jewelcrafting for me? 110 attack power. That's a lot more than any other profession could hope to give me from a Min-Max PvE standpoint. So I switched from Herbalism to Jewelcrafting.
Epic gems are coming sometime in the future. Since they should be on-par with the currently obtainable stormjewels, which are unique equipped, Each one will give 40 attack power. Developer's plans to make epic gems much more obtainable than they were in BC mean my bonus from being a jewelcrafter will from 110 attack power to 32 attack power once those become available. Blacksmiths, who get two extra sockets on their gear, will go from a profession bonus of 64 attack power (on par with other professions) to 80 attack power. Looks like there's going to be a new best profession in town.

In the next major content patch we will be removing the prismatic quality of the jewelcrafter-only Dragon’s Eye gems. Like other gems, they will have to match the socket color to receive a socket bonus. When this change occurs, players with qualifying jewelcrafting skill will be provided a yet to be determined amount of Dalaran Jewelecrafter Tokens as compensation.

seems worthwile to pick up bs
psh, JC is overpowered anyway
It's confusing stats like these that make me glad I don't bother with which profession would give which stats
I think the idea of "Requirements for Meta Gems" has gone by the wayside. Jewelcrafters have their 3 Prismatics so now they don't even worry about their meta's meeting req's. This new system helps bring back that "slide-puzzle" mystique back into the profession.
"If I drop this Hit gem for an Agility gem, is it worth it to gain my meta bonus but go under the Hit cap?"
"I meet req's in this decent-but-not-great meta with what I have gemmed. Should I change out my gems for a better meta, or work with what I got?"
All issues that should be thought of instead of: "OMG, I have the best meta for PEW PEW, and because of my Prismatics I don't have to think!!"
Also, with this change, will we see 2 stat Dragons Eye cuts? As it is now, they're only Red Blue Yellow.
Hm, you know, at first I was a bit pissed (my Alliance character will be a Jewelcrafter) but you know, it's not really that bad. In fact, I didn't even realize, before I read this, that you could activate meta gems with these. That DOES seem a bit overpowered in my opinion.
As far as Blacksmithing being the best profession, if that does seem to be true, I wouldn't hold your breath and expect something for THAT in a future patch too, like "Only able to use either socket bracers or socket gloves, not both"
Balancing is an act, and no ones perfect at it. This is just the wobbling Blizzard is having: one profession becomes better than the others and eventually it will be balanced too.
Of course, this is to say that it will happen only if Blacksmithing is as good as Jewelcrafting was pre this decision. If it's only slightly better, I doubt EVERYONE will switch to Blacksmithing just for two socketed gem slots. I can't see myself doing it, that's for sure.
I better get enough jewelcrafting tokens to buy 9 gems (3 per spec on my paladin) - at minimum.
GG Blizzard, I just dropped tailoring because Jewelcrafting would be better for me in pve. Now that's all out the window and I'm stuck with a nerfed jewelcrafting at level260
I'll be mailing you some dragonseye so you can get +41 stam gems and +27 spirit gems Juggz.
Awww =[
anyone else feel alchemy needs something more? the only thing you can do is transmute and make flasks. I can barely make child support with that crap :-(
Awwww. Sad panda makes baby murlock cry.
Not happy about this. I just powerleveled JC up from 0... really don't want to go through that whole thing with BS now.
Not happy about Blizzard's decision either. Jewelcrafters get a bonus just like Alchemy and Blacksmithing and now Blizzard is just gonna take it away now? I just don't think epic quality gems being made available (presumably) in patch 3.2 nor giving JC tokens is fair compensation because now JC won't have its "uniqueness" factor.
They'll still be the best gems in the game. It's not like the gems are disappearing altogether, they'll keep their stats and JC-only-ness. it just means we have to pay attention for meta gems and socket bonuses again.
I'm in the same boat as Bast... I'm at a point, as a tank, where I'm trying to get geared up and min/max myself and so I chose to drop my mining for JC. I have it up to 305 so far but after reading about the upcoming nerfs I am conflicted as to whether I should continue to level or find another profession.
Damn Blizzard... lol

Actually, dumbass, if you could read you would realize that they have merely nerfed JC's unique benefit to be on a par with other professions.
@Mark C
I hope you don't talk to your mother in that manner. If you've got a problem with what I said, then why can't you be polite about it rather than just sinking down to name-calling?
This is the only reason I picked up JC to get these gems, simply because I could replace shitty blue sockets with 32 ap or 27 agi gem.. so fucking retarded, way to go blizzard, I am soo glad I quit playing wow last month, the game is going downhill.
This game is going downhill because an OP profession got nerfed down to par with other professions?
As a tank, I'll still get the extra stam from Dragon's Eyes, plus one of the best EH trinkets in the game.
Nah theres other reasons why the games going downhill, and why their subscriber numbers are slowly dwindling, I know for one our guild has had almost 13-15 quit in the past month, and my server Azgalor has had a lot of people leaving and quitting... just that time of year again when people are getting bored of wow.
Haha! Now Jewel Crafters can get a small taste of what it's like being an Engineer.
I think it's fair to say that (for the most part) North America is now entering summer. Who wants to spent their entire day inside? Life is a cycle, so I wouldn't go as far as WoW is losing members permanently. As for the JC nerf, kinda lame since I'm in the process but it's alright, still get extra stam and still making gold of the AH.
I'm a blacksmith myself, always been, and I used to envy JC's for their imba gems. Seems like BS finaly is getting some luv :3
Why cant things be OP i mean really its and overall bonus for everyone else, i mean its the healers mana regen getting nerfed sure it was OP but it benefitted everyone.
Blame the players that said the game is too easy :P
Leatherworking is pretty useless too, most of the stuff you get from dungeons and raids way overpowered your creations, and taking it just for the Item Improvement kit is a waste of money, yet people still take it. Blizz didnt even add any new recipes/spells for the specialist tree, what's the point of doing the quest if the best specialist gear you can make is 10 lvls below you?
