Five Ugly PUGs

Up until recently, my participation in pick-up group (PUG) raids has been non-existent. However, I recently changed my death knight's spec to Blood to take advantage of the vast amounts of armor penetration (ArP) found on the gear in Ulduar. I was an Unholy death knight previously and cared little for ArP, but as Blood some of the items I passed up when we did Naxxramas and Malygos are suddenly huge upgrades.
My guild exclusively raids heroic Ulduar at this point, so if I want to get my hands on items like Grim Toll or Melancholy Sabatons, I need to join PUGs. So over the past few weeks I've joined probably around a half dozen PUGs. While none of the PUGs I joined were disastrous, they certainly left much to be desired. I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the top five people to /boggle at that I met through my recent pugging endeavors.
#5 The Undergeared Complainer
During one of my heroic Naxxramas PUGs, one of the women in the raid kept keying into vent to talk about all of the loot upgrades she needed. Every time we downed a boss, she would be very vocal about what item she wanted and would swear over vent when she lost the rolls.
After losing her second roll she spoke over vent and complained that she couldn't believe people were rolling on these items when they already had purples equipped. That's when I inspected her. She was mostly in greens and a few blues. Her gear was so bad that the 24 other people in the raid were literally carrying her through the instance. She still had the gall to complain about other people rolling on gear. I believe I watched her lose every item she rolled on that night. Karmarific!
#4 The Worst Ninja
You knew there had to be a ninja story in here somewhere right? Well this one still has me baffled. A priest in our Naxxramas pug rolled need on an epic trash drop. It was bind on pick-up and it was a leather item, which of course a priest cannot equip. We asked him if he rolled need on accident and without a reply, he dropped offline and logged out of vent. He never returned.
So this was either an accident or he is the world's worst ninja. If he meant to do it, what did he gain? He can't equip it and he can't give it to another player. At best he was an enchanter and could get a shard out of the gear. Otherwise, he can sell it to a vendor? What a score that was!
More than likely, it was an honest mistake, which is fine. He should have, however, admitted it and then he could have put in a ticket to have the item transferred to someone who could use it.
#3 The Backseat Raid Leader
This is the guy who isn't leading the raid, but wants to be. It started off innocently enough. He was a hunter and used vent to coordinate misdirects with the other hunters. Fine. Slowly he started telling people where to stand and how his guild usually does this boss. The raid leader didn't stop him and by the end of the raid he was talking almost non-stop on vent, giving people advice about bosses we've all been killing for over half of a year. The part that really got on my nerves was he used the term "skaters" and "skating" when I believe most of the MMO population calls it "kiters" and "kiting".
#2 The DPS Diva
I was in a PUG in the Vault and we were about to face Emalon. Right before the pull, one of the warlocks interrupts the raid leader on vent and states that he needs someone assigned to help him mitigate his threat. He then goes on to explain that his DPS and threat are so high that even after he soul shatters he needs a paladin to cast salvation on him. He asks the raid leader which paladin will be assigned to him. Everyone was in shock. I couldn't believe someone would make 24 other people wait for this self-serving ego stroking session. So I sat up straight, moved my drink and snacks away from my playing area and put all of my focus on the encounter. I beat the diva in damage done and DPS for the fight. "IN THE FACE! IN THE FACE!"
#1 The Lying Leader
So as I mentioned earlier, one of the items I'm trying to procure in these PUGs is the Grim Toll trinket, which drops off of four different bosses in heroic Naxxramas. That's the only item I need in the entire instance and the sole reason for me to raid there. I joined a PUG with one of my guildmates and away we went.
The loot rules were laid out to us in advance and they seemed very standard. Then my heart skipped a beat as the raid leader said something about wanting the Grim Toll. I got nervous and before getting saved to the instance I sent him a whisper. I asked him if the Grim Toll was reserved for someone or would we all be allowed to roll on it equally. He replied that everyone who could use it would be allowed to roll. Satisfied I zoned in and we began killing bosses.
We got to Maexxna and sure enough, she dropped the Grim Toll. The raid leader asked everyone to roll and after losing says over vent that he's wanted that trinket for a long time and was going to take it for himself. Now I had lost the roll to someone else anyway, so that softened the blow a bit, but he downright lied to me. I was really angry.
I told some of my guild members what had just happened and they all told me I should drop the raid. The issue was, I was already saved to his instance now and the trinket did have a chance of dropping off three other bosses. So it was either drop and have no chance at the trinket or stay and pray. So I stayed.
Well a few bosses later, the raid leader cheated my guildmate out of a piece of loot that she had won fair and square. He altered the loot rules that he posted in chat at the beginning of the raid. Shortly after, I left the raid.
I shouldn't be shocked. I know that kind of stuff happens all of the time. I guess I'm just used to raiding in the safety of a mature guild where everyone is happy when anyone in the guild receives a piece of loot. I can't stand liars and cheaters and that raid leader was both. Well in any case, I'm still searching for my Grim Toll and Melancholy Sabatons.
Do you have any horror stories to share from your PUGs? Have you met any strange or amusing players that you would like to add to my list?

Hmm, very hot issue.. PUGs :) I think u r gonna need a new server to host the comments. PUGs are a nice way to fill your ignore list, if u got the nerves to join one.
My story goes back on a Maggy PUG raid (I wanted the "Champion of the Naaru" title) with my mage. As u most know clicking the cubes on time is very essential, but this wasn't the issue. On the first wipe (normal for a Maggy PUG) and as we were waiting for resses and rebuffing, the raid leader started moaning about Pala healings. He said that Pala's suck on healing etc. Most of the other raid members (Palas or not) disagreed ofc with his opinion so he got mad and left the raid (without disbanding thankfully). We replaced him easily and downed Maggy in no time. He was in my ignore list for a while, then when I removed him from the list (cleaning it up), there he was again spamming guildless ofc the trade channel lfm to Naxx 25. Eventually many other players were picking on him and advising other players not to join his raid. Haven't seen him for a while now. Probably changed server or name, who knows...
i joined a 25 man raid on my DK, blood spec, for Naxx. Now let me say this first, i do PuGs all the time because i can never seem to get into guilds that even have enough 80s to do a 10 man naxx run, and most of them are undergeared anyway, so i PuG. and While i Pug i blacklist the ninjas, scammers, liars, and cheaters and once day i logged on and got invited to the worst group i had ever seen.
every single person in the raid was on my list... 13 people were listed for being ninjas, 5 were whiners, 2 were undergeared, the raid leader was a cheater/liar, and 4 use point and click to move around while also clicking their skills or at least it seemed that way.
needless to say we wiped on noth and i left after that
OK, this might seem a little out of place with all the 80 PuGs here, but as I started leveling up a priest -She's lvl 27 now- I have met some really random people in low level instances.
One guy who was set to tank, was not only completely terrible at tanking (I over agroed him using just my wand!) he also passed on every piece of loot, even a fairly nice head which would be good for him, and a definite upgrade since he didn't have one equipped.
Passing everything isn't as bad as low level ninjas though, because it's just so petty. Several people have rolled need on gear they don't need 'to sell on the ah'. Unless you really need gold, which is unlikely, you should still be greeding, because looting something just to sell it, is what greed is there for. There was also a guy who went round needing all the weapon drop in an instance and not using any.
The ones that annoy me most though, are the complaining ones who are either really impatient or don't know how the game works. If it was the latter I'm sure after explaining to them why I couldn't res straight away after wiping, because I have to get back to my body first, they would shut up. But these guys insist on summons straight away when they can't be bothered going themselves, even if they are one of the closest, and ask for immediate res' after they decided to pull too much and blame the healer for not healing when all their mana was used on healing non-tanks. etc. etc.
Well I've had my rant now. =P
Great post! =D
I have experience so many messed up wipes, but the most evident ones in my experience involved Magtheridon's Lair. Many PuGs have failed with this one purely because of cube clicking which i find hilarious now. But for the one that was probably the worst PuG for that place i was involved with was actually successful. It was a one shot, but it turned out the leader was from a broken up guild known as Pwnsmages which were infamous on our server as the coup des gras of ninja looters. Completely lied about how loot would work at the beginning and how it actually worked is that he "auctioned" off the loot selling these epics for freaking over 1000g. This was only 2 weeks b4 WotLK came out. I personally did not mind that he did this, but I was laughing at all the people who were willing to spend rediculous prices for stuff that was going to be replaced by greens in WotLK. I even told them and they ignored me.
Man, I could devote a website to my PUG experiences. Thankfully I haven't because I'd rather forget them. PUGs have made me want to just change servers entirely (dont raid on an RP server) and my guild's too small to do regular raids.
1: My guild friend is in Nax and I ask how things are going. She replies they need an Off tank, I had to BUY a large amount of gear then and there and I told them I wasn't going to be a good tank. They spent about 5 minutes saying " Get your tank gear on" and I told them " Dude, I'm sorry, I'm not a great tank this is what I have. Luckily they found another tank and I went back to DPS on Patchwerk. Patch goes down like a sack of hammers and 3 people die on frogger. Now Grob is a different story. My guildy is healer and she aslo didn't know Nax very well, but everyone has to learn. The leader kept shouting at her to move when she got the mutation but he never explained the mutation that well. We wipe several times than try Heigen after my guildy leaves from irritation from this guy and she wasn't the only one screwing up. On Heigen, not ONE person, specifically the healers could do the dance and again Mr Raid Leader went off.
2- Trying to get a simple bloody Deadmine run PUG, someone in trade mouths off at the my party leader that they need to call Deadmines VC and DM is Diremaul and someone else accosted us for even running deadmines and that we should just get the bind to account item. News flash smart one, not everyone has that kind of time especially when PUGS SUCK
Just Pugged OS 25 man just to kill Sarth and to realize that the raid leader ninjaed the Fury of the Five Flights to him and the Satchel of Spoils... :S
Oh well, got the Emblems and went my way waiting for the next time it drops 4 me! :P
As a healer, the things that annoy me the most are:
1) DPS saying you don't have a clue when you say they need to pick it up because you're a healer. They're doing like 800dps and they ask how I know and they try to convince me that that is enough for a heroic and that I don't know what i'm talking about. Usually followed by them dying during a bout of *lag*. Nothing like a bit of accidental revenge. *cough*
2) The tank runs off while everyone else is mana breaking/standing there for a second. For example, after a boss, the tank just legs it straight away. DPS are deciding if the gear is a good upgrade, i'm probably having a mana break or answering a question someone in the guild asked about 5 minutes before. He runs off, pulls loads and dies. Then he complains that i'm an idiot for letting people die, but he's the only dead one and far away from everyone else.
3) The guy who says "I need it!". This isn't so much a PuG guy but an idiot who was in our guild at one point. He was a DPS DK, who did a fair amount of DPS, but not near the top. He rolled on every item which he could use. Everything. When I asked him, after a few items, if he really needed it he said he did. So we carried on. THe problem came apparent when he rolled on the T7 legs from Gluth and he already had them. Then he rolled on them again on Thaddius. He also rolled on a BoP tanking necklace from naxx which had shield block rating - for off spec. The next day, NONE of the gear he won he was wearing, and it is the same to this day. He has not used one piece. He also won the T7 chest from 4HM for off spec. He said he was getting dual-spec after the raid and he didn't. He wasn't so much a ninja but a loot whore. I'm a paladin and can't really decide the upgrade for a DK, but we guessed something was up after a while. It was weird since we had all known him for a long time and some of us knew him in real life. Needless to say, after hogging all the loot and other people losing out on upgrades I told him to buck his ideas up or leave. He said he was doing nothing wrong and wanted the loot to sell or use in the future (which he wasn't going to, this is still 2 months later and nothing so far), so we kicked him.
I honestly didn't even know that people considered Heroics "PUGs" i just always assumed that this was the way Heroics work, sometimes you get some dps that doesn't pump high enough and you live with it sometimes you get an undergeared tank or healer you do what you can do. Luckily i haven't experienced any overly bad pugs, no "ninjas" . The only thing i have ever had trouble with is changing a OS+2 or +1 to just a normal no drakes because of low dps. I guess i have been lucky.

I can't stand the people in pugs who are telling everyone else what to do but wont even attempt to make a pug. If you have a suggestion thats great but dont tell the leader what to do if he is doing a good job. Also why become a raid leader if you dont know the fight?
Makes no sense
I was on a Heroic OS run. Loot rules were simple: Roll on what you can use and only if it was an upgrade. I am a Frost Tank DK and after downing Sarth and a pair of tanking pants and the T7 gloves dropped. I rolled and won the pants. the T7 glove were next, I rolled and won. The leader then says only ppl who hadn't won anything could roll on any other item! I called him up on it. Had I know that I wouldn't be able to roll after a win I would have asked the glove to be rolled on first seeing as 2 dropped.
Has anyone else had the loot rules changed on them mid-loot?
The only really bad PUGs i have done was before i had my naxx achivment. NEVER EVER ENTER THOSE!
My first time in naxx i joined a allready started run but was super thrilled because it was my first naxx ever and i had last spot. I ran in and accepted the "saved" when i saw that ppl where fighting. I made my way for spiderwing where the fight was, but when i got there they had all whiped on trash. 30 sec later all had left.
My worst experience though was when i was levling and running some instance (don't remember witch). We had a DK tank who was afk for the most of the time, when i asked him why he said that he was doing his homework at the same time. The whole group whined on him for a while, but he was afk, when he came back he said that he was 9 years old. (He probably was, worst player ever!).
ahhhhh he is so cute what was taht puppys crime? i dont pug much when i do it usualy a failure
@Deaththirst
Your story reminded me of this one OS 25 pug last month that several of my guildies joined. The pug had no problem downing Sartharion, but...
The raid leader kicked everyone out and took all the loot for himself, and LOL'ed "you've been rickrolled!" How do I know this even though I wasn't there? Simple. The anger at such an act poured into the trade channel and the guy who ninja looted all the stuff ADMITTED IN TRADE CHAT that he had stolen the loot and didn't give a hoot. He logged shortly after a fellow guildie (who is my RL sister) said that "no wonder no guild will take you".
Personally i love to hate pugs, but only cause i know better now, my guild ain't big but we've been running heroics constantly to gear up and be able to run ppl through heroics to expand our base and get into 10 mans and so forth.
Anyway, one of those night no guildie was on i decided to pug a DTK, ez mode usually. Well, this cat druid, goes on rambling about how to heal, how to tank, etc. we pretty much ignore him, he always dies, and then after a particular expleative comment he dies yet again on the trexx, at which point i can't hold it anymore and i say "and this comes from the guy dpsing the boss from the front and pulling agro from the tank" he left right after that, lol. Granted not the best group ever, but at least the other guys were not asswholes.
A few days laters i join a good prospect of a voa pug, i knew some of the names in there, all decent ppl, but just 5 min into it, i get kicked, i whisper to the raid leader and he says it wasn't him, turns out the cat was there and had assist, talk about holding a grudge, i had already forgotten about it... now i check for that guy in pugs, just cause i rather miss a chance to raid than deal with a moron.
I appreciate my guild so much more after such encounters.
IM a resto druid and I was asked to heal a heroic CoS with 3 warriors and a DK. We made it through with only 1 wipe, but that wasnt because of lack of trying. 3 Warrios doing their best to pull aggro of each other. I was OoM after every fight, so a timed run was out of the question even before the gauntlet. I never want to experience that again.
One run in heroic Nex with an awesome tank in full valorous. Because dps had no change of pullilng mobs of the tank i was hardly using any mana, but dps was. tank n me were happily running thru the instance with dps always a few secs behind on every fight. At 1 point tank already had 1 mob down with his own dmg before dps even showed up. Tank n me were /cry on each other's shoulders lol.
Sometimes even imbalanced pugs work out.
SKATERS!? lol!
Sorry for double post, just had to say it was a really good read. And boy, do I hate PuGs... immature epic horny 12 year olds :/
My wrid PUG run was a 25 man Naxx. I was definitely OVERqualified for this, as i had raided a few time with my guildies in Ulduar and had gotten some pretty good gear. Only reason I was in Naxx was, as urself, to get Grim Toll. We started out with the Military Quarter, we downed Raz no problem, bit of a surprise but was a good group. Then as we head into the next room, i suddenly realise that the nameplate of the mobs were grey, to my horror i discovered i had kicked from the raid... I immediately whispered the raid leader to give me a quick re-invite. He whispers back to me saying that me DPS was too low... which was not right cuz i was doing the most DPS out of the whole group as a survivalist hunter. I couldn't figure out why i was kicked, so i continued to question he choice of kicking me, all he said was that my DPS was too low. I told him that My DPS was the highest in the group, but he started to laugh and told me i was in the bottom 2 and below the tank. I don't know what DPS meter he was looking at, but it certainly didn't match what i had. I later discovered that he was a youngling who really had no idea what he was doing. He started acting like he was all high and mighty trying to convince me that HE was the top of the DPS, but he was a ret pally with mostly blues and a green trinket... So i moved onto the next PUG on my list, VoA hc. Got a group fairly quickly, the 8.5 legs dropped for me, YES!! so in actual fact, that snotnosed pally really helped me get my second set of 8.5 :D ty Pvpally...
It's a PUG story.
It's not a really good PUG story, but I guess it fits here.
I'm a lvl 80 SV Hunter who has run pretty much all the Heroics out there except Ulduar (in any form). I am well equipped and can do a minimum of 3K dps unbuffed.
The story: Heroic Nexus. I was bored so I decided to help some people get gear and achievements.
Was that ever a mistake!
First off, on Terenas server we have a great association of guilds known as the Small Guild Alliance. The people needing my dps were not in the SGA. I should have known things would deteriorate from there.
The DK tank was well specced and geared for a new lvl 80 that had no experience in Heroics (I checked his Achievement log). What I later learned is he was an OCD agro hog. If there was a loose mob he simply had to pull them, whether the dps and healers were ready or not. He did this every chance he got, not giving any of us time to replenish our mana, and then had the nerve to spout off at us in Vent that we were not keeping up. I kindly explained that mana users had to have time to replenish to keep his ass from leaving streak marks on the ground when he wiped the group, to which he replied that mana was over-rated. The healers let him die on purposed on the next pull for that. You'd think that at lvl 80 he would have at least learned that healers with mana are a good thing.
The rogue... didn't do anything. I think he may had had himself on follow on me and let us carry him through the instance. Bah, we four manned it and the DK could have kicked him at anytime.
The Druid and Shaman healers we had were... well... insteresting to listen to on Vent. Really bad porno has better dialogue than those two. I muted them after about 2 minutes since there is only so much smut I can listen to. They did a great job healing when the DK did his tanking duties right, but sometimes I wondered if those two should really have been in this raid if they were more interested in taking off their clothes for each other.
Get a private chat room already!
So we hadn't even reached Telestra before we wiped for the fourth time. Nexus and Heroic Nexus is not hard... well... not supposed to be hard. I have been in this place countless of times. But wiping on trash was getting a little too much for me to bare. That, and the 15g repair bill.
I made up an excuse about having to cook lunch (not, too far from the truth) and hearthed out. I later found out from a friend from the SGA who took my place that the entire instance was an epic fail. They never finished the instance, the Druid was a loot hog whether he could use the item or not (he was not an enchanter either), the Shaman became a whiner for not winning anything (she was the enchanter), and the DK became the OCD agro hog again.
They wiped a total of 6 more times on trash resulting in my friend receiving a whopping 35g repair bill.
We took down their names and guild names for future reference. I also contacted their guild masters to have a few questsions answered.
The DK = 13 year old home-schooled techno-geek with little social knowledge (this is verbatum from the guild master).
Rogue = quintessential moocher. Would rather have everything handed to him instead of working for it. That could actually describe my Brother-in-Law.
The Druid = dice-ninja and all around loot hog (was later /gkick from his guild)
The Shaman = was diagnosed as a nympho and was under the supervision of her doctor and on meds to help curb her... um... tendancies (her doctor should follow her into WoW and keep a watch on her there)
I see them call out for groups in the trade channel every so often and can't resist the urge to grow a bruise in the center of my forehead from banging it on my desk.
ah pugs, some great some bad. My most recent fail pug was in VoA. I had just come up to wintergrasp to check it out and we ended up winning. One of my guildies was there as well and asked if I wanted to join his raid for VoA. Now I am not completely heroic geared and I know it. As soon as i get in the group the chat begins about weather or not we have enough dps to down him. I chime in letting everyone know that if they want to kick me I would have no problem leaving. One of the other hunters seems to think this is a good idea. I get ready for the kick but i guess the couldn't find anyone, so away we go. We go in and start clearing trash and in the pause before the first boss I inspect the hunter who agreed w/ me. All epic gear, nicely gemed and such. Well two shots at the boss later everyone gives up. On a larf i puff up recount just to see how i did. I was out dpsing the Epic geared hunter who was so adamant about me leaving. /facepalm
I have far too many PuG stories to divulge all of my favorites, but here are some that are at least memorable.
THE BRD NINJA
That's right, BRD. This was about 6 months prior to the LK release, and my husband had been leveling his warrior. Now getting close to level 60, he wanted to run through BRD, specifically looking for a few good pieces that would allow him to do okay as a level 58 or 59 in the Hellfire instances. I agreed to run him through with another friend of ours. I respec feral and come to tank, and our priest friend offers to heal, a big bonus since he really likes the old dungeons and knows them inside and out.
We made our way through the mountain and to the entrance. We stopped to kill Pyron because my husband was on the quest. There was a warlock there, standing right outside the instance. He asked if he could come along. It was late and we were there for a good time, so I thought "eh, what the heck?" I invited him.
At some point towards the beginning, Kang the Decapacitator drops. Nice piece of axe, and as the only axe user in the group, a really nice upgrade for my husband. He rolls need. So does the warlock. The lock wins. We bring this to his attention, and he actually agreed to trade it. Three seconds later, he drops group and logs off. I screenshotted it and put it up on the forums. I also let everyone in our guild know. 10 minutes later, one of our locks catches him spamming it in trade, and I guess he was bored, because he made it his personal goal to keep him from selling it.
4 months later, he was STILL trying to unload it.
TANKITY TANK?
I don't remember what my reasons were; I was probably accumulating Badges of Justice. Whatever the reason, though; I decided to do the Heroic Daily back in BC one day. It was Ramps. C'mon, the easiest Heroic in the xpac, it was a no brainer. I got into a PuG, and we wiped on the very first pack of trash. And the second. And the third. Come to find out, the tank was in greens and blues and had never been in the instance or tanked any heroics.
Yikes.
We tried to explain the pulls to him, as these were common sense mistakes and easy to fix. For instance, he didn't attempt to LoS the first set of casters around the corner and they killed me, the healer, right away. All of the dps tried to keep the casters off of me, but the tank was completely oblivious. We never made it to the first boss.
A paladin tank in ret gear. I wish I had looked at his gear before I passed the lead to him so he could mark. And I fell behind him on the dps meter after a boss, and he never let it go.
It was a herioc, I guess it's tolerable.
Even though I could use quite a few items that my guild doesn't raid for I REFUSE to join a PuG. I've often been deemed an elitist because I refuse to join quasi-PuG's some of my guildies have put together.
It's simply not worth the trouble for me. Invariably there is some issue which either draws out, spoils, or otherwise makes PuG's a waste of time. Experience has told me that the aggravation isn't worth the end result.
saving a bad PuG...got in a HVH run with my buddy back from TBC days when we'd roll hero TK for rep...decided we were gonna rock it since we hadn't run together since LK came out...group was actually very good, and I had no worries since my buddy was on heals.
Well, I'd totally forgotten about him being an enchanter. Since LK, all the chanters i've run with have needed while the rest of us greeded...simple to follow rules...turns out my buddy greeds and the rest of us pass lol. Well I win the Water-Soaked robes and he explained his rules...the whole time everyone's complaining and griping, I immediately say i'll open a ticket to have the gear transferred. No worries there, cept the tank wants to kick me (calls of Huntard, loot ninja, etc, being thrown around).
Things calm down and then the Epic gloves drop which wouldve helped me considering while gearing up, I've sacced +hit...tank bitches and moans because he needs hit too...these are MAIL dps gloves mind you!
Any rate, i rightfully roll need on gloves, only to win T7.5 gloves in a HVoA PuG which went very well. Me being me, I edit the ticket to get the old glvoes and the robe to my buddy to DE....simply put...good Karma can save a PuG or even shut some morons up
i recently did MgT heroic mount run.
so i PuG a group, got a 75 dk, 76 pally heal, 80 pally tank, 76 hunter and my 71 pally dps.
i asked who had the attunement, and most of the people didnt have it, so we went normal first...
in the end it was a disaster because i constantly pulled aggro from the tank and did more dps than him!!
but we where at Kealthas on heroic, and than the tank leaves because he couldnt stand it that me and the heal where complaining about him!!
the worst (and the only bad :D) pug i had so far
