Leveling Your Priest: Choosing the Spec

Finished leveling your priest and want to figure out how to spec now that you're max level? Here is some info to help you decide where to spend your talent points!
Discipline

The Discipline tree is a mixture of both heals and damage specialization. This tree focuses on mana efficiency and survivability. It is often used as a supplementary tree with either the Holy or Shadow spec to enhance the desired role

Pros

  • Increase in power of helpful buffs as well as adding Divine Spirit, a buff which adds a good amount of additional Spirit

  • Increase overall mana pool and mana efficiency

  • Can heal or DPS decently

  • Increased longevity and survivability

Cons

  • Not as good at healing as a Holy Priest

  • Not as good at DPS as a Shadow Priest

  • Rarely increases the power of spells

Holy

The Holy talent tree offers the best healing specialization in the game. Increasing the power of your healing spells greatly while also increasing the power of your holy damage spells

Pros

  • Extremely good heals

  • Spirit of Redemption allows you to continue to heal even after death for 15 seconds

Cons

  • Low Damage output

  • Doesn't offer much to increase mana performance

  • A few talents are unnecessary for both PvP and PvE

Shadow

The Shadow talent tree can give priests the power to turn the tables on damage potential. If properly geared and speced a priest can dispense some of the best DPS in the game.

Pros

  • Very good DPS

  • Shadowform to increase damage done and decrease damage taken

  • Vampiric Touch and Vampiric Embrace help to keep mana and health of your group high.

Cons

  • Almost complete lack of healing power unless you morph out of Shadowform

  • Have to compete with many other DPS classes (mages, druids) for a spot in an instance group

  • Many people expect priests to heal as opposed to DPS
