The Hog And All Its Badassery

Late last week, news started coming out about the new mounts that would be introduced with the launch of Wrath of the Lich King. I, for one, am not a mount collector, so I simply read the news and moved on with my life. That is, until last night when I caught a glimpse of one of those mounts, The Hog. The Hog is an upcoming rideable mount that, according to reports, is a permanent mount (not a temporary quest reward) which can be summoned like all other Wrath mounts. To top it off, it is even in the current build of the beta!

There is other information about The Hog that has been gathered through datamining of the game files. First off, the mount currently isn't flagged for Engineers, but due to its look it will likely be restricted when it goes live. So be sure to take it for a spin in the beta. Next, it appears that the bike's speed might be tied to its rider's level, much like the Winged Steed of the Ebon Blade. Therefore, the higher the toon, the faster the bike will go. As of now, I haven't spoken with anyone who actually owns the sweet ride, so this information is simply rumors based on the aforementioned mined data.

That hasn't stopped me from getting incredibly excited though. I have always fancied the engineering mounts over the animals since The Burning Crusade. Not only do I think the engineering mounts look better, but they are just far less common due to the restriction. But wow, does The Hog look awesome or what? The screenshots even make it look like The Hog may allow for an extra passenger!

Sadly, The Hog does have a knock against it. It seems that the developers have seen fit to put some restrictions on the bike - possibly for noise pollution. The Hog can only take you around in style in Northrend and Outland. Shucks, can't tear down the shores of Westfall.

Oh and in response to one of my earlier blogs, is that close enough to a car for you?

My friend told me today about this mount. He said that it is possible that it can allow a passenger on it, but it's still unsure. But what is sure that it is gonna be in WotLK.

I am not an engineer (LW and Skinning), but my friend is, so he's psyched about this mount (even though he hasn't made his flying one yet). But I am still excited about it because of the possibility that it can carry a passenger.

But to think someone driving around with a Hog in Hellfire Peninsula just doesn't quite fit.

It is rediculous I mean I want to be in a fantasy see world and all I see is more things that are to real life like. I dont want to ride a motorcycle when I can do that in real life. This is just my opinion im guessing a lot of people want to ride a motorcycle on WoW.

I'm with Josh, it's awesome and all, but I'd rather see something badass like a chariot, pulled by whatever your Azeroth mount looks like. THAT, my friends, would be some serious Rad.

I, for one, think that if they made it look more like a gnomish contraption it would be even sweeter. A Harley-Davidson wouldn't fit into WoW, but if they made it look more rickety, like the Gyrocopter, it could be a real sweet mount.

I'm also not a big fan for bikes in WoW.. It's a bit too futuristic for the theme of WoW imo.. =/ I don't mind engineering vehicles and stuff, but cars/motorcycle's (things that use gas and such) seem too far in the future.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterVozzy

I'd hate for WoW to jump the shark with this one.

Crazy engineering mounts - yes.

Motorcycles with a WoW paint job - not so much.

Plz reconsider the 3D model Blizz... but what do I really care? I have my turtle mount so I'm good.

Now i agree with most of u that a motorcycle isnt that cool for WoW. And just to say it was so my idea for it to be a skill or something that allows some1 else to ride ur mount as a passenger.
so WoW motorcycle no thanks
allowing peolpe to ride my mount hells yea

Why couldnt the team that dose this be hord - on the server i play on alliance gank u 24/ 7 if u dont have gear so i prty much hate alliance but about that motorcycle stuff if wow makes that public ill quit wow

coz it will screw it up

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKillerchamp

have to agree with everyone else. I like the idea, and its probably geared towards those that want that kind of demographic, but then again for my motorcycles i like the crotch rockets. ^^ oh heck yea. I'll stick to my gryphon, no matter how slow he is.

They should make a pimped ride for tailors, like perhaps a flying carpet rofl, that would make me laugh. Or maybe a flying potion for alch (sometimes happens when I lag and dismount from the flying mount, really sick).

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAquavendor

They are making a flying carpet mount for tailors Aquavendor, it's been reported on some of the other sites that are following the wrath beta.

And I don't exactly understand some folks hangup over the bikes anyway,

To quote Vozzy:
It’s a bit too futuristic for the theme of WoW imo.. =/ I don’t mind engineering vehicles and stuff, but cars/motorcycle’s (things that use gas and such) seem too far in the future.

Not to pick on you Vozzy, I've seen this, or something along these lines on a few sites that show these bikes. People are uneasy/unhappy about this beacuse it's too far in the future, but they didn't have a problem with roflcopters and such, or the whole Exodar/space ship stuff from outlands?

And if it's the gas thing then let it be known that you can run a motorcycle on steam. Run some youtube searches for steampunk motorcycle and you'll find it.

I'd love to have one of the bikes, but I'm a tailor so I'll go surfing on my flying carpet instead.

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMoose

I'm with Josh on this one, it's hard to imagine a Tauren riding a bike or anything of this sort especially if WoW is set to the fantasy timelines, this is a bit of a step into the actual world rides. Not really appealing..

August 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRIkesh

How is a motorcycle to "futuristic" but a Helicopter isn't!? You guys are drawing the line at a weird place. I mean there are all those Tree Chopping down robot mecha's in several different forests.

I think it's cool. Not like there are going to be 1000 of them driving around. I've only seen a handful of the helicopters on my server, and when the expansion comes out, the choppa count will most likely be smaller.

August 22, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDan

Actually I didn't know about the copters or whatever in the outlands, I've only recently joined I'm just stating about what I know. :p I don't really have a 'problem' with either of them, though.. I just don't really like the idea that much of some guy flying past me in a mortocycle in WoW.. seems really out of place. I have yet to see the copters and stuff yet though but I'll check it out once I get there. :p

I don't think steam emits smoke, though, which is coming from the engine from the bike. But if I'm wrong, correct me.

August 22, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterVozzy

I think when people are arguing that the bike is too futuristic, they actually mean something else, because you're right Moose, plenty of people don't mind the copters or futuristic looking guns and all sorts of sci-fi gear that came with BC.

The problem with it is that it steps out of the realm of Sci-fi and fantasy or rather, WoW's version of it. They just don't fit. It's too real-world-ish.

I CANcomfortably say that I think it's too futuristic because I have always disapproved of BC's sci-fi theme: Crystal space ship, another planet, flying machines, orcs/draeni=aliens... I was really looking forward to WotLK because I thought it would be a step back in time and bring WoW to its more familiar and likable fantasy world.

I sincerely hope that the bike goes away, or they at least change the skin (if the picture above actually is taken from the game) and restrict it to engineers.

I'm also not convinced that that screeny is what the skin will necessarily look like. Those look photoshopped and I wouldn't find it hard to believe that someone created those images once they heard about the mount.

As for passengers, I had read (I'm sorry for the lack of link) from blue text on the forums that some of the world PvP stuff included a flying mount that carried multiple people to complete an objective. Combined with the side cars (again, assuming those pics are real) I think it's safe to expect that WoW is going to allow passengers on various mounts. I would like to see this work on current mounts and be able to carry low lvl friends who either can't go as fast or don't have a mount at all.

I too have heard about flying carpets. It could work for me, but I think Blizz is stepping into the realm of "Tooweird" if they don't pull it off right.

Expect me to tread lightly into Northrend.

Killerchamp:

"but about that motorcycle stuff if wow makes that public ill quit wow"

These threats goes to Blizz, not here.

And OF COURSE it doesn't run by gasoline OR steam! Hell there are millions of components all over Azeroth and Outlands that you can make fuel from (Remember Area 52 in Netherstroms?"

But it is a fact that too much "Modern day m'fcking boring life" stuff in a fantasy game can EVENTUALLY ruin it, much of the fact that RP players are so "into" the game that they go emocut themselves when someone destroys their "Mighty hero" fantasy by reminding him that his life is nothing compared to his WoW life.

But hey, we all have seen the marvels of gnome (and some goblin) "science" haven't we? The Alliance have freaking Tanks, now shouldn't a tank basically be a car, but with heavy armor and a beeeg gun? Someone might or will say that they aren't a mount, but we are talking about futuristic "thingies" that destroy our fantasy world (of warcraft).

I myself concentrate on other things, like DKs being too OP and "How to make this game more fair" and other stuff.

August 22, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRugi

I guess I'll be the first to say that I don't care about futuristic or sci-fi looks. The reason I love WoW is because there's something for everyone. I kind of like the bike idea.

But seriously. Threatening to quit WoW over a mount... if you don't like it, don't ride it.

August 22, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterZeo

I personally like it, its bringing the game forward in time. What do you guys expect though? The game is gonna stay in one single day? Its been 3 years since its release and in 3 years a lot can happen, even in real life. I say this is a welcome change, if its not engineer ima rid it around all day =P.

But yeah, if you dont like the mount then just dont get it. It's just a game and you guys are gonna quit over a MOUNT! Now that means get outside and go look outside and what do you see? CARS AND BIKES AND SUCH! Guys please dont quit over this mount, its bringing the game into the future.

August 23, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRockeroad

I agree with Rockeroad on the point that you shouldn't quite over a mount. If you really want to quit, pick a REAL reason, do it, and quite threatening to 'quit'. It's so irritating.

As for the mount, I don't see any of my toons riding it. I don't like motorcycles so it's not my cup of tea. I'll leave that to the guys and motorcycle fans.

I do like the idea of a flying carpet. Kind of Aladdin-ish or Arabian nights (well both really)...I would definitely get one just to have a joy ride on it. As well as to say 'I have a flying carpet'....Yes I'm a dork. I'm one of those people that summons their latest companion-pet in the middle of town or an instance to show it off! Same with my mounts! XD

Something just caught my attention up there, and I have to make a comment on it. ^-^

Honestly, the bike already does look rather rickity! When it moves, it almost looks like pieces are going to fall off behind it! So, like all the other mechanical contrations of its like, it will probably be restricted to Engineers. If you want to see it in action, go view this video:

i have a "hog like this in RL, but mines all new looking. its a crazy looking mount that will be craazy to use. startign a biker gang anyone?

August 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commentercjus

I'm not sure why everyone is upset. The goblins and gnomes NPC's and Neutral Towns are always full of kinda quirky stuff. Wow is a completely new type of fantasy. It's not all swords and magic. I agree that the laser guns and space ships kinda have a weird feel to them coming out of Azeroth, but I like the idea of a motorcycle. You don't think gnomes and goblins have taken some of their already highly advanced mechanics to the next level since BC? I mean, come on. A motorcycle makes much more sense than the roflcopter, or the teleporters from BB to Gnomer. I do think it needs a new skin. More quirky, and a bigger difference between Horde and Alliance.

September 4, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterGoosegrease

It's not a motorcycle. It's a chopper.

The Draenei crash on Azeroth in a spaceship, engineers already have jet propelled helicopters, and people are concerned that bikes are too much high technology for World of Warcraft? Hog FTW.

September 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMojo

I don't understand most of the 'Hog Hating' comments on here, did you speak up with the high-tec looking guns and 'copter came out in TBC??

Did you quit over that??

No as you are still hear moaning about it.

Do us all a favour, pick up engineering as a profession the you will understand!!

As for me, my Hog cant come quick enough!
