Blizzard Confirms Bind To Accounts AKA Heirloom Items

Venerable Dal\'Rend\'s Sacred Charge

I already had a nice blog entry written for today but something was announced yesterday that all of you should definitely know about. Well, a few things were announced but Juggynaut already covered the PvE to PvP Paid Transfer news. I am against it, that is my two cents. In lieu of starting a new column this Friday I just had to talk about the so called 'Bind on Account' items, more properly known as Heirloom items. This new development is ripe with awesomeness, even if it is mainly for the alting people out there.

Details on the Heirloom or 'Bind to Account' items:

  • Purchasable via dungeon tokens (similar to Badges of Justice)

  • Can be transferred to characters on your account (ie cannot be traded)

  • Only transferable to characters on the same realm

  • Items scale with level (see inset picture)

  • Scaling will make the item equivalent to a blue item of the characters level

  • Heirloom armor will transform based on the character who wears it. Therefore, a level 80 plate piece can be worn by a level 1-39 character who wears mail, but gains the ability to wear plate at level 40.

Future changes:

  • Additional Heirloom items aimed at high level alts to come in the future

  • Additional ways to earn heirloom items

Best of all this information has been confirmed by Tigole and Verimonde! They even confirm that the goals of the items are to get people to play other classes and support people that love to play alts. Hardcore or casual, I would think that both camps would approve of this move.

Don't worry, that blog entry that was bumped for this should return next Friday.

hmm, i've known about this for 3 weeks now, nice to have it confirmed now :

one thing though, when they say it'll be approriate for the level, what about enchants and twinks? its all well and good having ececutioneer on both your daggers (min item level beeded 35) but to then trade it to your level 19 twink when level 19s done have access to such a thing? possible?

and we could also get some pimp looking level 1 characters in full T6 style gear :D

agu out ^^

Oh that's sex

one thing i noticed was the item level was 1. does that mean that enchants that require an item level of 35 or above will not work on the item at all or will the enchant disappear when it is traded to a lower leveled character?

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRokhan

Basically, how the enchanting will work. You can ONLY enchant Heirloom items with the enchants which require a level 1 item, you can't enchant em with anything better then that, even if its on your lvl 35+ character so the item will be of lvl 35+ you can only do the level 1 enchantments. Kinda sucks but is also kinda sensible.

As you can see, the attack power etc is nerfed from the blade - I can only assume this will also be the case with any > lvl 35 enchants.

I love this addition. I'm a huge alt-addict, this will make it a lot easier to have a lot of high level chars. Just kinda worried on how the trading back and forth will work, as forgetful as I am. :)

Blizzard: I know the climb from 1-80 is tough and it'd just be easier rolling a death knight... so here's an intensive to level from 1 again.

Of course this gives twinking a brand new lease on life as well.

so say i have this item at level 1. what happens when i level, will my weapon level also?

September 12, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBoges

Whoa so if you get a heirloom item and you give it to your like lvl 19 alt you can make twinks easier? That's real hot, Blizzard gj

Boges, it doesn't quite work like that, in essence yes it does but its a bit more lax.

It does level up with you, but in increments on either 5 or 10, i can't remember which it is but it wont be every time u level up the items level up, it'll be when u reach i.e. lvl 5, 10, 15, 20.. so on n so forth.

Also again about the enchants, you can only use enchantments which can be put on lvl 1 items so the enchants aren't gna be scaled down. But ofc they won't scale up either :(

I LOVE IT!!!!!

Being an altaholic myself this is wonderfull news! it will probably save me some money :D

So... If I have a Paladin main and pass my plate armor down to an alt.... what is a druid, priest, warlcock, mage, shaman, rogue (or even in many cases, warrior) going to do with Paladin Armor?

I liked this idea a lot at first - when I heard about it about 4 days ago - but it got me thinking that this isn't going to be useful unless I want to keep a toon in a twink bracket that is the same class as my main. I don't want to lvl up two of the same classes - especially since blizzard is going to allow us to save two talent specs on one character.

This might be more useful with weapons - but armor? No need.

What I would like to see is Realm-Unique items - maybe even an armor set. I can think of numerous ways to allow the item (weapon - trinket - armor set) to be transferred between characters/accounts. How sweet would it be to have the only one of a weapon on your realm? It would be a real obvious mark of honor (or luck - depending on how you acquire it)

I don't understand anything at all about these items... there are so many questions that are raised about them...
Am I to understand that i can give a 70 item to any lower lvl char and it will just morph into the required level for that char?? how in god's name are they going to make the morphing understandable?? i mean... what happens to all of the friggin' stats??
This totally eludes me... Call me dumb/noob but I personally don't get this at all...

if the item lvls with your twink then they will be OP and later on the little kids will bitch about this shit and we all knwo it deep down inside but just dont want to tell ourselfs that but its true twinks will be OP and bliz will have to listen to all the kids complain about it till they change it

This to me is a great idea, though i never heard of it. I am an altaholic and this will be great, but it should also come with extra character slots with each realm, which i know would make many peoplw happy but also prove troublesome, although in not sure how, but htere's always a problem. and talkin about Adrale's comment on realm-unique weapons, that would be totally beast, but they should also make different realms have different realm-unique weapons. im just sayin.

September 16, 2008 | Unregistered Commentermagrah

Sounds interesting. I wonder what the final outcome of the concept will be by the time the WotLK is released...

September 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAlayea

Just wondering if lets say a lvl 80 plate item would change to say a lvl 45 cloth item...or if it is class specific?

September 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDadio

about the realm unique items, if bliz did do it, they wouldnt even be worth having because if they were any good at all, that would give you an unfair advantage, people would get mad and the list goes on

September 22, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterarcanepwnage

i really could care less but bliz has to keep it balanced to keep a fanbase

September 22, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterarcanepwnage

Ok about the twink weapons. This is NOT how it is going to work. Every 10 levels the item upgrades, this means it will upgrade at 10, 20, 30, 40... You will probably notice that this means it upgrades at the BEGINNING of each PvP bracket. Therefore, it won't be a twink weapon because at lvl 19 it will have the stats of a blue lvl 10 weapon...That's how it's explained on the wow-europe forums (but a little bit more in-depth there). Just to clear that up. =)
