WoW Life Lesson #20 - Play It Safe

So I'm all for taking some risks every once in awhile, but from time to time it's best to play it safe.

Ever been in a pug and some tool rushes in and pulls the boss? Or worse yet, they tell you in chat that they know what they are doing or how close they can get but still pull the pat? Holy crap that makes me got nuts! I wish there was an ingame fine or something we could give to tools, not noobs cuz we were all noobs at one time, but tools who think they know the game inside and out and end up wiping the raid and costing me 5 dailies worth of gold.

So for group sake, play it safe... a little at least if you don't really know what the heck you are doing. Don't rush into rooms. Don't pull mobs until a ready check. Don't back into another pat because you weren't looking. Just think. Play smart. Play safe.

And in RL, play it safe too. Get yourself a Blizzard Authenticator today. I know too many people who have had their account hacked or keylogged only to see their gold and gear gone when they finally get their account back. I don't get any kick back from this and I have no contact with the people who sell them. I even play on a Mac for the most part and I still use a authenticator.

Why? Cuz I put years into this game and I want to put years more into it and I want to play it safe and protect my account.

If you don't get this, do virus checks or check your computer for strange apps or weird network traffic or memory usage spikes. Or better yet, play on a Mac exclusively. I would but I sometimes have to log in at ProjectLore and play on a PC, hence the account authenticator.

What ever your choice is, play it safe, and for group sake, don't pull the boss.

I second whole heartedly. My authenticator is being shipped and I can't wait. When you look at what you have invested in the game $6.50 + shipping is more than worth it.

Oh and yes I am a rogue and I know what I am doing sneaking around PP the humanoids. (open mouth insert foot) Or i should have just PP'd the monsters weapon and fell on it myself since i was just spotted and agro'd a PAT of 2 & mob of 4. No way out of that one.

Remember, PP away from the group and make sure Vanish is up. Nuff said.

I got one in my bag at BlizzCon, but never really bothered to figure out how to use it. Then again, I've got a Mac, don't download crap from strange web sites (or BitTorren), keep my computer and network secure, and life is good.

I know I'm very low risk...but should still figure out how to use the thing at some point.

@PatrickD

It's simple; log onto the World of Warcraft website... click manage your account. Then click the box on the screen which says "Add an Authenticator" (or something like that, can't access it at work). Then just type in the serial on the back of the authenticator and PRESTO! You've got an authenticator tied to your account.

And yes, you can add a single authenticator to more than one account should you own more than one... Better than carrying 2+ on your keyring and trying to figure out which is which.

Enjoy!

They just became available again from the Blizzard store and I've been checking on them since juggy's post about them a while back.

I put a lot of time into WoW and even though I keep everything for the home PCs secure you can never be too careful.

It is well past time that people stop implying (or, sillier yet, stating outright) that Macs are somehow magically "bullet proof" when it comes to virus/trojan/other exploitation.

When it comes to the care and feeding of their technology, there are just as many poorly-informed or otherwise under-skilled Mac users as there are PC users. When you mean "are not, usually" many of them will read "can not be."

Prudent computing practices are universal and operating system agnostic. Implying otherwise is counter-productive at best.

Good idea i need one of these after juggy sugjested, and that you said it i think i will get one, sounds easy and kinda cheap.

Absolutely positively the best thing you can do for your guild if you have gbank access is to get yourself one of these little babies. Simply because as painful as losing your stuff is, losing your friends' stuff is worse.

I agree. Get an authenticator!

I do play on a Mac, but somehow my account was still hacked (might have actually been through my email because I had emails telling me I tried to change my WoW email to some other one I've never heard of.) I happened to be online when the other user logged me, so I contacted Blizzard right away.

Anywhoo, luckily it looked like they wanted to keep the character, because I was logged in IF... and when I was able to log back in 20 minutes later I was in the middle of Terokkar Forest. Dead. and Respecced from Arcane to Ice Mage. BUT I still had all of my gear and gold, what a relief!

I thought I was the only one that played on a mac

Just in case you didn't know /readycheck makes a popup show on all party members asking them if they are ready. When they click yes there is a tick over their profile until everyone is ready.

This is better than saying 'ready?' in chat and waiting for everyone to respond and it also shows that you know what you are doing.

I been Hacked, Twice. After the first time, i kept getting emails from this place called MMOinn (wowgold farmers), sent in an email, reported there asses, got my stuff back, but OMG, there website is Still running? Theres gotta be a freaking law against this stuff.

I'm recently recovering from my second hack, in which this time my account was Banned. I'm not taking anymore chances. getting a blizz authenticator, and Heck, I mgiht decide to change account's if i get the mony for transfer's.

Hacker's, die in a fire and burn in hell.

For those of you who might be thinking that this is another revenue stream for Blizzard, think again.

I just ordered one of these dongals and the grand total of the USB authenticator and UPS shipping came to $6.97. That's damned cheap. That's at or below manufacturing cost.

Really, take SaintGermain's advice. Our guild master's account was hacked last weekend. I don't think anything of major importance was stolen, but it certainly was an eye-opening event for the other guildies and I. If you are anywhere near to lvl 80, get one of these buggers.

Even though I don't really have much to lose (for now anyway) I'll get one of those as soon as they are available (Sold out for shipping in Canada...:()

Cheap protection = cool :D

I used to be enhancement spec'ed until a month ago, when my guild lost a good bit of our healers and the guildies kept coming to me asking for me to do heals. Been the de facto guild healer ever since.

Having stated that, I have whole new appreciation for what it's like when a tank or dps decides to pull a Leeroy. Today, in fact, I was running an instance when another pug member pulled aggro while i was very low on mana. Had to blow just about every cooldown and use a mana pot to keep the group from wiping. After the fight was over, I said in the party chat that "pulling a leeroy makes the healer very unhappy". While that sounded rather calm, in my mind I was going "%#%$%*!!"

Moral of the story: It's better to be cautious and have the instances take longer rather than to rush in and cause a wipe.

As for the authenticator, I'm kind of undecided. It sounds very useful and reasonably priced. Heck, I've had a couple of guildies who have been hacked before. It's just that I'm concerned about possibly losing the item somewhere in the house or car, and my account has never been compromised. (Sure, it does probably sound weak, but it's how I honestly feel.)

I got a free authenticator from Blizzcon, I debated between attaching it to my account though (those extra 10 seconds to login suck XD). However, after seeing 4 people I know well get hacked in the past month, that baby is hooked up and ready to go. Lil extra protection can't hurt.

Ingame fine for tools, yes please.

January 9, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRikaku

I play on a mac as well, and one of my accounts got hacked. Just goes to show that no platform is completely safe. I do use the authenticator now, and hopefully won't ever have to go through the realization that my character is standing naked on the IF bridge.

January 9, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel Swiecki

I got one as soon as they came out but it packed in yesterday. Am so used to it now I am paranoid of logging in until I get a new one. It suck's if it does break in the weekend as the account/billing team only works civilised hours in the EU - and that is the only way to get it removed from your account. Even with that as a potential issue will be putting a new one on my account as soon as I can.
