NBC Tackles WoW Lingo

Being the repressed, socially-awkward gamer who lives in his mother's basement and fears the sun, I watch a lot of TV.  To be honest, only one of the cliche descriptions fits me.  I will leave it up to the Internet Sleuths to figure out which.  My point is that no matter how many people continue to sign-up for World of Warcraft, or snap up those Nintendo Wiis, gaming, especially on a computer, is still largely seen as a nerdy hobby that should be shunned.

Enter in the mainstream media's latest attempt at "understanding" gamers with NBC's take on our "secret society."  Nicole Riley is the women in charge of the horribly misinformed and unintentionally hilarious person piece.  I don't mean to rag on her reporting, but I highly doubt she thought it was going to win any awards.  In actuality, she, and her boyfriend, probably had some fun putting the clip together.  Especially the boyfriend.

Riley claims that Jay Hollanda, her beau, is "ranked in the top ten out of 12 million" players for World of Warcraft.  What?  Where did that stat come from?  Assuming I just may be out of touch with the PvP leagues or sponsored PvE guilds I did a quick Google Search for Jay Hollanda.  You know what I found?  Links to the same video above, or to discussions about how ridiculous it is.

Sounds to me like Jay may be playing himself up so he can stay home and cruise by on Riley's career.

It gets better, way better.  Riley sits down to play the game and quickly realizes that she needs help. Hollanda informs her that "I need help" in WoW-speak is really "LFM 25 Nex 2 more tanks 2 more DKs."  Lawlz.

Personally, it seems that I - and ProjectLore's Glossary - need to work on our WoW, because I have never heard the reference to a "Timmy" in WoW or seen pwnzer spelled in such an odd fashion.  Perhaps it is just his server, or he's so good at the game that everyone follows his lead.  Hollanda isn't playing his girlfriend entirely, he does seem to know a good amount about our favorite MMORPG.

In all fairness, much of the piece was probably trumped up by production, like a good reality show - get this, they aren't real!  It's obviously true that we do have our own lingo, but doesn't every hobby?  Either way, this is a must see for all WoW players, so be sure to send it to your friends and post it in your guild forums.  Whether they meant it for a laugh or not, it certainly got me ROFLing.  Just check it out and let us know what ya think.

At least none of my family lives in the Bay Area.  If they did, I would expect my grandfather to call and try to speak "gamer" to me...

Edit: It looks like YouTube had to take the video down, but we've updated with the video from the NBCbayarea site.

I saw this video yesterday, very funny stuff. I'm just as baffled as the rest of you when it comes to the "lingo" he used. You can tell he does play WoW, but I wonder if someone else tried to spell the words because those are deff wrong. Plus half of them I've never heard of which is funny. Bad reporting is bad.

Sadly this person exists.... His characters name is Oompa sadly he does have the ashes of al'ar mount but being in the top 10 this guy is not... he has a fair bit of achievements and a decent 5v5 team but other then that he is nothing more then a person who got his 15 mins of wow fame and if you think he is top 10 material check his armory account... he just got his 25 badges of valor 1/29/2009 now im not entirely sure if he does alot of heroics or not but... if you can one shot maly then im sure you have more then a fair share of 25 man epics... thats just my take...

Least she did 1 thing right.
Caps lock when asking for help, she must have a hidden talent.

And about the tier 2, could just be his way of showing he was/is a "true" old school raider and not just one that got that achivement at 60+.

1-shotting Malygos could just be his group didn't wipe and not that it were their first time doing him.

My 2 cents.

Apparently the whole thing was a joke, that got aired after the Super Bowl.

His gear is rather meh, if you ask me. Arena teams are fail, and his gear isn't even as good as mine, PvE wise.

Most certianly not top 10, nor even top 1000. Also, how does a holy pally melt face in SotA?

Well... WoW does have a few cults. We all should know "Cult of the Damned" by now. (It's those guys you kill in Icecrown for the dailies.) And I think the Lore guys are killing off the remnants of the "Cult of the Burning Blade" are they not? LOLZ

Seriously though, we are bilingual, Gaming/net speak is a language all it's own! Heck, I'm still learning my friend's D&D language. I still have to ask them to let me "take a 20" on something. XD

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHatell

Yeah he has the ashes of alar mount, but if you look a little close at his achievements you will see he got it on his very first Kael down. lucky basterd...

February 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDivine

this can be found at 0:32 in the video,

when she said the dude was ranked in the lolTOP TEN OUT OF TWELVE MILLIONlol

February 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterIshamyyl

To all you trolls out here, he may be an epic fail where it comes to his statements, ( though honestely he got me laughing, it apperst to be a joke piece to me, with the fixed camera setting, unprofessional edditing. Its just a home vid quality piece that got aired ) But at least he has one fine girlfriend. Come on, do you seriousely thing anyone talks like that at the dinnertable?

February 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSardit

I think I might roll a Dk on his server so I can tell him what a huge tool he is. Satire or not, he blew it baby!

February 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThothy

If this guy is at all as into WoW as they make it seem, it would be logical to assume that he reads various WoW related websites and blogs. Its hilarious to think that not only will he have to deal with the entire WoW community bashing him, but also the ridicule and humilation on his own server.

Lay into him for me guys. :D

February 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRaknor

Maximum lulz.
I'm not going to site the SDF to you morons over something so trivial just so you can understand the jokes implied here. But I have to offer at least something, so next time you bash a commercial made for lulz, remember at the end of it all you're still going to log on wow and this will all be a distant memory. So really? Who cares enough to get upset over this?
My props to this tool and his hot piece of ass girlfriend.
I'm sure he's out there keking right now.

Want a real wow report? Throw a bunch of clips from the shatner commercial, south parks make love not Warcraft, and some of the leroy Jenkins wipe.
No one would bitch then, I bet.

awww no more available =(

February 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTrial

Obviously, this video wasn't meant to be taken seriously. Its attempt at humor, however, was epic fail.

February 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlayea

Yeah... people seem to like making WoW players look bad, or they treat us as if we're some exhibit in a Zoo. A Rare and misunderstood creature, if you will. But, I can see that the guy does know a bit about WoW, but he's trying way to hard. A "Timmy"? Never in my four years of WoW have I heard that, and, last I checked, one shotted means that you killed in ONE hit. But, meh...
