NBC Tackles WoW Lingo

Being the repressed, socially-awkward gamer who lives in his mother's basement and fears the sun, I watch a lot of TV.  To be honest, only one of the cliche descriptions fits me.  I will leave it up to the Internet Sleuths to figure out which.  My point is that no matter how many people continue to sign-up for World of Warcraft, or snap up those Nintendo Wiis, gaming, especially on a computer, is still largely seen as a nerdy hobby that should be shunned.

Enter in the mainstream media's latest attempt at "understanding" gamers with NBC's take on our "secret society."  Nicole Riley is the women in charge of the horribly misinformed and unintentionally hilarious person piece.  I don't mean to rag on her reporting, but I highly doubt she thought it was going to win any awards.  In actuality, she, and her boyfriend, probably had some fun putting the clip together.  Especially the boyfriend.

Riley claims that Jay Hollanda, her beau, is "ranked in the top ten out of 12 million" players for World of Warcraft.  What?  Where did that stat come from?  Assuming I just may be out of touch with the PvP leagues or sponsored PvE guilds I did a quick Google Search for Jay Hollanda.  You know what I found?  Links to the same video above, or to discussions about how ridiculous it is.

Sounds to me like Jay may be playing himself up so he can stay home and cruise by on Riley's career.

It gets better, way better.  Riley sits down to play the game and quickly realizes that she needs help. Hollanda informs her that "I need help" in WoW-speak is really "LFM 25 Nex 2 more tanks 2 more DKs."  Lawlz.

Personally, it seems that I - and ProjectLore's Glossary - need to work on our WoW, because I have never heard the reference to a "Timmy" in WoW or seen pwnzer spelled in such an odd fashion.  Perhaps it is just his server, or he's so good at the game that everyone follows his lead.  Hollanda isn't playing his girlfriend entirely, he does seem to know a good amount about our favorite MMORPG.

In all fairness, much of the piece was probably trumped up by production, like a good reality show - get this, they aren't real!  It's obviously true that we do have our own lingo, but doesn't every hobby?  Either way, this is a must see for all WoW players, so be sure to send it to your friends and post it in your guild forums.  Whether they meant it for a laugh or not, it certainly got me ROFLing.  Just check it out and let us know what ya think.

At least none of my family lives in the Bay Area.  If they did, I would expect my grandfather to call and try to speak "gamer" to me...

Edit: It looks like YouTube had to take the video down, but we've updated with the video from the NBCbayarea site.

by the way i just want to add that i highly doubt hes one of the "top ten players" he wasnt even teir geared yet, and about the crap he said like ponzer.... uhhh no one says that... sorry to say man, and no one says kek when they laugh they say- lol, not kek, however if your ally horde's lol to you is kek so hes kinda right, but not really. Dream on, on being top ten dude

This guy is a huge tool, and this reporter is a joke. Who does a report on her boyfriend?

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterStiverton

You know this was meant as joke, come on...

They were just adding a filler to the news report which they hadn't filled yet. Maybe she mentioned WoW from her BF and they decided to do a funny, haha, report.

haha, this made me laugh. The things is, I actually try to prove this shit to people. Playing WoW actually increased my social skills, typing skills, math, and linguistics(spelling/grammer) I use some phrases when I goof-off, but for the most part I type everything out. I guess it's the RPer in me. The only REAL part about WoW that they got right is that we have a language of our own. Besides, who the fuck talks to thier girlfriend about WoW in the WoW terms? I just talk normal, and rarely bring it up(fights start)

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaeltis

Honestly....12 million of us out there and we have to rely on this tool and his reporter girlfriend to represent us?

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKwarass

It's a level.

I give it a Fail.

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterZerbet

The real payoff is the final word of the clip.
"What?"

...because that's what I was thinking. Who does a report on their lazy boyfriend?

He probably told her he was in the top ten and she believed it.

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPatrickD

Well, I'm gonna start using "Timmy" at least :-).

kek, pwnzor!

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDovehill

Something very weird he starts off with we one shot malygos last night, WTF? There is more to this story, than this story. I also felt awkward her lying and saying his in top ten ranked out of 12 million that was epic failure on her part.

Okay.... gamers aren't a "secret society" (hate to break it to ya) and whoever says crap like "5 capped AV today" when asked how their day was desperately needs a life. This jerk makes anyone whoever picked up a headset and mouse look like a lunatic. Don't stereotype WoW players!!

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHerofTime

So. Painful. I couldn't get through the video because misinformation makes my skin crawl. Even if it's supposed to be 'funny' it still hurts.

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlii

seriously i have never heard anyone say kek before....... and yea this is a huge stereotype of comp gamers although his girl is super fine still doesnt make up for whatever this guy was trying to prove

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRadament

bring back jenkins

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAguzar (Darkspear EU)

I am amazed by this actually being taken seriously by anoyone, gamer or not. I have also never heard anyone say 'ponzor' 'timmy' or 'kek' (besides when i hear horde players say lol), and when it comes to real life, who needs to use shortened versions of words? a person would have to be amazingly lazy to say AV in real life, because actually saying alteric valley should not be considerably shorter than 'av' and there is also the fact that anyone listening to you that doas not play WoW would think that your an idiot or according to NBC 'one of the top ten wow players'

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterchurchill

Does that guy have down syndroome or is he just stupid?

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterXhypher

This seems like a bit of an overstatement by the main stream media to keep gamers seem like a secretive group who are these socialy odd people who dont mesh well with normal society.

I cry foul on all the things like this. They are fluff peices to try to connect with local gamers while still making them seem like this underground group that no one can connect with.

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJasonMB

Besides, anyone else notice he's wearing a tier two helm?

February 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterXhypher

This is so ridiculous! They make us look like idiots, and this guy has close to NO CLUE of what he's saying.

LFM 25 2 tanks 2 death knights? TIMMY? ponzor?!
WHY would you need 25 people for the nexus, and why would u need two tanks and two death knights?

This guy clearly MAY know something...but to me it looks like they took YouTube videos and googled WoW for stuff to make up.

*shakes head*
