BlizzCon 2009: What If WoW v4.0 Isn't Revealed?

Even Hoover (And His Library) Is Worried Even Hoover (And His Library) Is Worried

Saying there has been a bit of speculation surrounding the next World of Warcraft expansion would be an understatement.  For months now players have been looking ahead even though we aren't even on the second content patch (of four).  Blizzard added fuel to the speculation fire when it was noticed that the company is trying to trademark the term "Cataclysm" for use in games and products.  The early July news sealed the deal for many players; BlizzCon 2009 will usher in the MMORPG's third expansion.

What if that doesn't happen?  What if Blizzard jut sits on the company's figurative hands in 2009 instead of following up the Diablo III announcement?  Why bust in on Arthas' reign?  After all, he is the most popular villain in all of Warcraft.  What if the announcement turns out to be the in-the-works, hush-hush, this-isn't-the-MMORPG-you're-looking-for title we know they are working on?  What if, heaven forbid, no game is announced?  After all, they are already working on four games (and the expansion), two of which should be out "soon," Diablo III & StarCraft II.  Shouldn't they focus the marketing on those titles that are first in the schedule?

Let's assume that Cataclysm isn't announced, or that it doesn't pertain to WoW.  What would that mean for our favorite MMORPG?

Should things go down that way, I believe it could upset the disenfranchised players.  Judging by conversations with friends, guildmates and the comments here at PL, there appears to be many players at different stages of quitting.  Many are just enjoying the Summer, others are taking a break between patches, and some see Call of the Crusade as a lore-less filler patch with nothing for them.  If BlizzCon disappoints then these members may be "taking a break" a bit longer than the developers would like.  Should things go down that way we may see the subscription numbers drop for the first time.  Perhaps even below 5 million (China's 6 million are barred from WoW still)!  Unlikely, but scary.

That's just one possible scenario.  To all the speculators out there I pose you this, what if...?

I thought Blizz had stated they were only working on 3 major content patches for WotLK?

July 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBarishi

I think there'd be a lot of disappointment from the WoW community if it turned out that it wasn't the 3rd expansion, but at the same time... those same people would have only themselves to blame because they built up their hope on speculation.

A few pointers:

1) The reason BC had 4 content patches was because of the following:
-Content was rushed; all shoved out during launch
-WoTLK was behind development schedule

Seeing how with BC, their main poised villian was killed off in 2.1 (Illidan) and Wrath was about 2 years down the road, they needed to improvise. Blizzard recognized their mistake of throwing so much content ingame from launch; thats when all the other raids were released. Blizzard needed to act, so they introduced Zul'Aman, and Sunwell Plateau. ZA was just to buy time, while they made a more suitable ending to the expansion, as oppossed to a demon hunter getting killed.

When Wrath was in Beta, a blue (forgetting who) said that Wrath would have 3 acts, as in 3 patches. Act 1 was Wrath's launch and culminated at the Wrath Gate. Act 2, is the Argent Tournament. The reason it was split into 2 patches was to give players another raid to destroy, and also lead into the Collesium's development. I mean, c'mon, how would a GIANT collesium be built over night?

Act 3, as you can guess, would be Icecrown Citadel (As much as Arthas is bad, I can't get the picture of the lil boy that we once loved out of my head).

Lets say that there would be 4 patches, instead of 3. Would it make sense for the Argent Crusade to put together an elite strike force in 3.2, and then, in 3.3 say "Oh. You've worked hard for this moment, go kill that thing over there..." No it wont. We dont need any other side raid and such before Icecrown. If anything, add another boss to Vault, as they have been, or open another wing of the Chamber of Aspects.

As for the topic here: I'm 90% positive, that the next WoW XPac will be announced. The dates and timeframes are all added up and say: Yes. If not, oh well, i hera Ozzy Osbourne will be there^^

"For all of you %*$%er's who say this bull%*(% Arthas is the true %#*^ing prince of darkness, then ^$(& you! I'm the true ^%)&ing prince of darkness. *Hiccup* "

"SSHHHHAAARRRROOONNNNNN!"

I recon a Cataclysmic event would happen at BlizzCon if they don't even hint at the next Xpac for WoW. It is incredible that we are close to 3.2 and people are wondering what the next XPac will be. To say that I am not interested would be untrue. However, it is definitely not the first thing I am thinking about in regards to WoW.

Admittingly I am a casual player, truely. (regardless of what my wife says) I only play for a couple/few 2-3 hours a night. 4 hours maybe on Friday/Saturday. Some nights it is helping others, some nights 1 or 2 dungeons, weekends 1 maybe 2 raids if I can find a group. I am diligent enough to be able to do a full 10m Ulduar and 25m Flame Leviathan, but I am not sure how 3.2 patch I am ready. The kicker to that being once it does come out that I can farm the heroics and probably run Naxx/OS enough to get a couple pieces of badge gear to run Collesium. Not sure what will happen to Ulduar once 3.2 is here. Other than people blowing through it to get to Yogg. Is there even a reason to do Algalon (er, something like that).

I guess I am looking forward to 3.2, but not ready to hear about an XPac that is more than likely another year away from release. I think it will be interesting to see what they will have that is going to top LK since Arthas is going to be a big BadA** boss (will his encounter even be the calibur of Yogg & Algalon?)

maybe they will announce the mysterious game they are developing :-?

I heard the new class is gonna be a hunter new type, and theyre getting rid of BM ( hence the nerfs to it). With this new heroic class, the toon will be able to capture pets, train them, send them of to battle, but the toon doesnt do anything, its all on the pet. The toon goes out to get these pets w/ a new taming system, were they throw a spherical device to capture them, and the toon can have up to 5-6 pets to use at their whim.

I really don't care what they do as long as that do an AQ opening type event for Icecrown Citadel raid.

Right now I am really iffy as to if I will be even playing this game by the time the next expansion comes out. I sure as hell won't be playing Diabo 3.....Diablo 1 and 2 were enough boring for me to put up with for a lifetime. StarCraft 2 I am excited about......but other than that Blizzard has nothing to offer me. I think they need to realize with several other MMO's coming up soon (SW:TOR, STO, SGO, and several others) that they will be losing many of their players to other franchises they either grew up with or are more interested in. In the next six months or so, we as consumers of Blizzard products will see how the "Iron Giant" of the industry will face these challanges, and I doubt we'll like what we will see. Like you stated before they have a split development team on 5 products, 4 if they don't announce their expansion.

@Renji
POKEMON :D
i can w8 4 the Xpac, wether they anounce it or not

July 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTyriu

Renji if they took bm out that would piss the bm hunters alot and they would have to add a new talent tree and test it agasint the other class so it isint op :P im hopeing for a battle mage or a druid like class but a new class thats like a bm hunter would be awesome :D

July 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMontes

@Renji
wow....POKEMON?! if blizz did that, idk if Pokémon company would just sit there and do nothing. so i doubt that would happen, but still, just cant wait to kill arthas, so patches cant come soon enough.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterUnholybane

lol :P, I think a monk class would be awsome for the new hero class, rogue like melee w/ fists or staffs, with priest like healing :D

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRenjï

@Renjï - 5-6 pets? No wai... gotta catch em all!

A Monk class could be nice, but another melee DPS Hero class would be kinda weak if it's the only other Hero Class released. I'm thinking Ranged DPS class that's a healer Hybrid. Either Ranger or Bard. I'd be interested in the Bard myself, as Spell DPS is more my style, and Ranger seems like it would be far too redundant with the Hunter class.

Plus, another downfall for Monks would be a cloth melee DPS set, which is yet another set of armor Blizzard would have to develop, whereas, the Bard could share gear with Balance/Resto Druids, if they get Leather, or Elementa/Resto Shaman if they get mail (I think traditionally Bards were a leather wearing class.)

Although, I suppose Monks could be allowed to use Leather, and share Rogue and Feral sets.

As for the OP, it would be unlikely that Blizzard forgoes any information on the next Expansion. I know Blizzard was interested in yearly Expansions, and they might be trying to get to that point.

Although, it seems they try to pack incredible value into their expansions, which is nice. I think Blizzcon 2009 will be worth it overall. I can see more details on their yet to be announced MMO, details on WoW 3.3 and just enough 4.0 details to blow our mind, release date for Starcraft 2 and lots more information about Diablo 3.

If they don't announce 4.0, then that's really a long time with such sparse content, and we could see populations diminish far worse then the few months pre-3.0. Blizzard needs to shave off about 3 months between expansions or plan for an additional content patch to hold us over. Or perhaps the slow period is a way for Blizzard to give us a break, so we come back to WoW again hot and heavy once more.

I know that I came in late in the game, but it still seems that I just reached 80. I don't want to have to level again in December to get to 90, regear to run whatever new raid they release just to have to do it over again.

July 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTeal

I think it would be awesome if there was a mage-like class that can where plate armor while dealing good damage by melee and spellcasting. Just a thought. Battle-Mages :D

July 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNickmin

@Nickmin - In Warcraft that's called a Shaman. While Mail isn't exactly Plate Armor, with a Shield my Elemental Shaman has 49.66% physical damage reduction currently. Plus, if you were more into Melee then casting, you can go Enhancement.

July 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBlight

Atm Theres no new continent you will be leveling in classic area but it will be buff with few unused areas and old ones for high/lower lvls and i think next hero class that i would roll would be necromancer like ones u see NR Shcolo strath and stuff like prist /lock mix and mybe throw bit of mage by letting them teleport i think that would be kick ass and also barrens will be cut in half o t sure y ashazha is 10-20 area and my fav thing since im gnome lock WE RETAKE GNOMEREGAN! and ORGRIMMAR WILL BE DESTROYED!
