More DoTs! A Final Brawl with the Classic Onyxia

wowscrnshot_092109_225316

With rumors swirling about the incoming Patch 3.2.2's release date, last night I took some time away from Brewfest festivities to squeeze in a final encounter with Onyxia, in her classic form. I was hoping this would serve as inspiration of sorts for others to go battle her as well before the patch, but as we heard this morning it looks like the update is now underway. As early as tonight, a freshly angry Onyxia awaits those brave enough to enter her lair.

Although I've seen plenty of videos and heard players brag about soloing the once epic brood mother, I wasn't confident that I'd be able to take her on alone in my squishy leather gear. So I rounded up a couple of guildies who also were keen to battle Ony, and together we headed for her lair in southern Dustwallow Marsh.

The three of us - rogue, warrior and paladin - sneaked in through the gate and easily tore through a few trash dragonkin. I felt almost guilty as we rounded a corner into her nest and found her sleeping peacefully. But not guilty enough. She awoke with a fiery vengeance, ready to lay a team of 40 adventurers to waste with a single Deep Breath. Instead, she found just us three, 20 levels higher than she, and geared with equipment and spells far beyond those she once knew.

onyxiaRegardless, she put up a good fight. Most of her fire attacks practically bounced off the plate armor of the paladin while I threw DPS from the side. When her whelps came, spamming Fan of Knives worked handily. More ranged DPS would have come in handy when she took to the air, and the three of us ran around puzzled about how to get her down before her fireballs took us out. I was a fraction away from dying several times before we finally pulled her back within melee reach. The warrior was not so lucky; he took the brunt of fireball damage and reached his end.

As Onyxia died, we each picked off a ton of loot. The little achievement whore inside me also was thrilled to get Onyxia's Lair, even though I've heard it will no longer be required for the Classic Raider achievement. But there will be new achievements! Plus a new pet whelpling and updated loot!

Not nearly as troublesome as she was in her hayday, but still a beast to be reckoned with, Onyxia soon will be back at the forefront of glorious encounters. I don't know about you guys, but I am revved up to have this battle be returned to its nostalgic difficulty. With any luck, Onyxia will be back up and ready to really shine tonight. Who else plans to pay her a visit?

woo am i first? At any rate, I did her the other night with a Pally buddy of mine on my Hunter...of course while he ran around healing himself, I kept firing off potshots and eventually died LOL...though my buddy DID solo her down from 50%...pretty good stuff and a now defunct 'cheeve made me a happy Hunter!

I did her a few times on different characters over the past few months, long before finding out that the old version would be going away soon... well today actualy. Due to being only low 50s when BC came out and then no one wanting to do her untill wrath came out since the gear was obsolite and there was no achievment system yet, my first attempts was a combination between my 70 hunter or 70 pali and my friends 70 hunter or pali or 68 warrior the day achievements came out with no luck we could get her to stage 2 no problem, we could handle the first wave of whelps but where not able to burn her fast enough having never geared up our alts, my first successful attempt on her was March 10th this year with me on a 71 DK with a 80 paladin healing... it was a fun yet long fight due to well she was designed to be 40 maned and regardless of how much the gear has changed only having 1 person DPS a 40 man raid it takes forever... Second win against her was on my 68 druid in a 5 man group... fight went much faster with 4 dps and a healer... Its nice to have been able to see her when she was still 60 though I wish I had gotten a chance before BC back when she was hard even for 40 people.

What I found most ironic about her late BC and untill now in wrath was with the raid nerfs in 2.4 or whatever one they made raids easier Onyxia 40 man was easier to 1/2 man then ZG 20 man, and the first few mobs in AQ(40) where easier to solo then that of AQ(20)... ofcourse once you get to the 4 mob pulls that no longer holds for AQ, but it seemed odd that the single mob pulls in 40 man raids where easier to burn down then that of 20 man raids.

I was just in the worst fail PuG for the newly revamped Ony. It was pathetic. Waiting tonight to run it with my guild.

I ran original Ony for the first (and last) time back around BlizzCon '09 time. I enjoyed it quite a bit...but was really only looking for the original achievement before it was gone forever.

a bunch of guildys soloed her including a Ret pally, Blood DK and a holy pally before they nerfed the gold off her it was a easy way to make back those Naxx 25 repair bills...

Last night we one shotted her kinda disapointed that it was no where near the epic battle that it was supposed to be but was still fun and point to note for people who havent done it Kill the dragonkin adds Quickly they hurt.

Gl to all that are going in there tonight alot of fun and rember standing in fire gives u a nice buff and pretty green numbers on your screen :-)
