WoW Life Lesson #14: There Will Always Be Haters

Yes, yes there will. What can I say? There will always be someone out there who doesn't like something for some reason that you may not be able to fathom. And some of those people will hate on you and everyone around you until you log or your guild master /gboots them.

These haters could be 'on your side' or on the 'other team' but either way, they just try and make your RL or WoW life a living nightmare. Weather it's at work or home in RL giving you grief or saying ill-informed and impetuous things, or in WoW in battlegrounds yelling at you for no reason or in STV just 'cuz, haters have a way of just being jerks.

So what do we do with haters? Well I suppose that there are several things that we could do. You could challenge them to a duel, but that rarely ends well even if you win, and in RL if you win you'd probably go to jail. Usually if you do win in WoW, they just spam you with hate chat or call you a noob or worse in /g chat or /y in Shatt.

You can report them to a GM, but really what can a GM do if the person hasn't violated the TOS agreement? If they have been rude or hateful but not rude or hateful enough to warrant GM action, you're stuck sitting there, /shrugging and wondering what to do to get your satisfaction.

Or, you can do what I prefer to do and just /ignore them. Yep just ignore them. Sooner or later a hater will do something so stupid that they'll get banned, or more fitting, get ganked in STV and camped for hours on end while their attackers just /laugh and /spit on them. Not that you should ever wish this on someone, but when you hear it happened to them, it kinda make you feel like things are right in the universe.

I've had my share of haters, for whatever reason, and I am sure you have too, in RL and in the game. While in RL it's not as simple as typing /ignore, it is possible to just not be around those toxic people.

So... what's the worst hater story you've heard about people playing in game?

Reader Comments (35)

November 2006, we're enjoying a leisurely stroll through Blackwing Lair. A certain unnamed dragon drops a Trinket which I still have to this day.

Drake Fang Talisman. I have more DKP then any of the rogues or hunters so I win the trinket with ease. None of them are happy with this action but being the raid leader there's nothing much they can do except tell me I'm an asshole and then ":P" me to make it seem like they're not serious.

One person is very upset though. So upset that he whispers me to no end. Strangely enough it's not somebody in the guild. Even more strange is the fact that he's a priest. I would hear him call me a moron, stupid and a dickhead over the period of little over a month. I've never been one for the /ignore command so I let him ramble on whenever he speaks to me. That is the biggest hater I've ever had.

I am Luuk, I am a Paladin and I will take your DPS items just to watch you cry.

Have more fun, care less about epics.

September 5, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLuuk

Putting aside DKP and all kinds of technicalities, that's a pretty dick-move Luuk. I played a resto druid during the days of BWL and even I didn't have the brass to take that item. Team DPS would have created all kinds of drama if I dare take that away from them.

As a fellow "hybrid", I do understand the difficulties of having wanting to gear for your different specs. Unfortunately, the life of a raider drives a player to hold the guild's benefit over oneself.

i was on an alt in westfall and there was a lv1 priest running around begging for money. when i told him to take off he started following me around, calling me a stupid fat bitch over and over and over and over and over a few more times. after a while, i led him out of Sentinel Hill and into a pack of gnolls and then the attacks started to bleed into the gen chat.

after a while he just got tired or had to go to school(i usually get on between3-5 in the morning. i keep weird hours) and finally stopped. out of the long, copypasted, tirade all i got are fond memories and a detailed screencap gif f the encounter.

heard from a guildie that they too were assaulted by the evil man who only knew one bad word not too long ago.

September 5, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterlishuss

I remember a certain enhancement shaman in my guild, getting the Dragon Spine Trophy off of Gruul. Boy were the rogues pissed. But as a fellow hybrid, I probably would have done the same thing if my main spec was ret. Don't let the haters get you down Luuk.

i cant put my finger on the worst hater bc i have a lot of them(i tend to speak my mind freely)

Resently i was tanking in MT and i asked the healer if he was holy spec and he replyed with "Only stupid fags are fully holy ROFL" which was wierd bc i didnt say anything in a remotely mean way. so i replyed "actually healers are speced fully holy....and the only reason i say this is bc your heals are kinda weak" and when i said that EVERYONE in the party started yelling at me for 'bitching out the priest' and i was yelled at for the rest of the party, when all i said was his heals were weak. i didnt leave only bc i needed the EXP to ding and the bracers off the last boss which i got, but it took 3 priest related wipes b4 we got there.

some servers worship tanks, some healers. and some servers are filled with idiots.

[Warning: Contains Foul language]

Last night in front of Zul'Aman for the stupidest thing, no gear was involved. This stupid Feral Hippie Female Elf named Hellzdruid of THE LORDS OF LLAMAS kept I guess they were hitting on my priest which the priest is a guy, I'm sure the elf was too, so i said stop it and go away, then she started following me and called me a "hoe" (LoL, spelled it wrong!) and a "pussy" so i got pissed when he said "my balls hadn't dropped," he was probably the average little 11yr old kid on Antonidas US but he really got me PISSED when he said "I sucked balls" so i challenged him to a duel like an idiot, he beat me because druids can stealth and stun me from behind, hehe. Then when he won, he was gloating like an idiot. Luckliy, Balefirez, hunter guildie had my back and Kicked His Butt!

Thank you Bale!

my worst experience in game with hating? Hmm, well there are three that come to mind but i'll stick with one. It's actually fairly recently, when I started playing again thanks to this site giving me the fever again *no offense*. I was running around with my new alt, a Feral Druid who I plan on later switching over to Balanced or even Resto for Tree of life, when of all people my ex comes by with his nehunter tank.

He and I left on good terms so I start up a chat, taking a break from PvP and farming. When it comes down to what is going on in our lives, since we don't see each other that much anymore, I bring up that I got a small gig that we'd both been aiming at for a while now. It's nothing big, just a drawing and stuff for a few guides here and there for a few games on another site *not going to name drop*. Then all the sudden he starts to go all passive aggressive on me. We're on the same server so the next thing I know is there's some nasty rumor flying around that I hax and that I'm not a real gamer. BS, I grinded like everyone else, I farmed for epics, and worked my tail off for all my purples.

After a few weeks of now hearing him basically call me a skank, cheater, noob, and all this shit, I do something I swore I wouldn't do in WoW. I /ignore'd him. Shame, since I wanted us to remain friends. Thinking of switching servers now though.

Too many bad experiences to even list them, but AV is really bad. Everyone talks down to everyone else on Horde half the time (probly not realizing ally are doing the same thing??) etc. Everyone tries to lead and then everything just falls apart

I've been a mediator for ppl when dealing with that stuff off and on for the entirety of my WoW career. i've done some good (I think) and held my guild through some storms over stupid stuff ppl did. But I've tried to impress on people a code of doing things to avoid shooting ourselves in the foot, and most people have found following it to help ease (*most* issues)

I wish people in general were just more mature about stuff. On the plus side at the very least it's given me valuable insights on human nature...

Haters... i think this might go under the category.

On the oh-so stuffed arthas server (horde) there is about 3 guilds that everyone knows (names shall not be given however) and in the middle of the year of 06 where naxxramas was still not fully cleared by these three guilds, one of them decided they needed to just top their raid members off.

So one of the other three guilds cleared their way through BWL to the end but did not finish off nef, the guild that thought they needed to top their members off struck a deal with a single member from the BWL clearing guild, every week they'd have the member that was in the raid invite them, then they'd walk in and exploit the mechanics back in the day and save themself to that cleared BWL, once that happened they would then flood their members in and effectively, STEAL a completely cleared BWL that had only nefarion left.

This went for about 2 weeks, then the 3rd time it was brought to light and a friend of mine was the one of the people who first found out.

The guild that cleared it tried to talk it over in their vent but the other guild just laughed and made fun of em, needless to say that corrupted member was kicked within the hour and unfortunately that guild full of complete Assery is still around, i think that was one of the worst acts ive seen and heard of in WoW.

I went farming in Gnomer with my lock, looking for two specific drops, one green pattern that usually drops, then on the off-chance of getting a drop on the first-aid anti-poison book (rather farm than pay AH prices). As I'm entering in, I see a small group forming outside, think nothing of it. 2 sets of mobs in, I get a tell asking to join, 1 of the guys outside. I invite, then set the rules, two specific drops I want, if he finds them, they are mine, he can have everything else. I set the loot to free for all just to save having to click pass on every pickup. 3/4 of the way up to the second boss, the drop shows up and see he picks it up. Up to now, I have picked up nothing, he has taken everything from every mob I've killed. I tell him I want that drop, that's what I'm looking for, then he says no, it's his, he picked it up. I remind him the only reason he came into this instance was me and he'd gotten everything up to now. He refuses again, so I promote him to leader, quit the group, and leave him there to defend himself. I get tells from him now for the next 3 hours before I report to a GM. Very colorful language. I'm used to haters, as I've played all the toons for both factions, and have played all professions and talents, 28 toons ranging from 20-70. What really upset me before the GM came on was I started getting tells from his guildies as well calling me names. By the time the GM came on, I had a very full ignore list.

This is kinda in the same vein but i play on an RP server and a friend of mine was boosting a bunch of girls through SM. Anyway with it being RP and my friend Req being very into RP, he was giving them the whole RP experience, insulting mobs, emoting, dedicating victories to our guild's evil mad god. So anyway about halfway through these girls start complaining about him RP'ing which is just stupid on an RP server. So he dumps them in the middle of the Cathedral and buggers off. Next thing he's getting hassled cos he left them and this then spills into the general chat where everyone in tirisfal glades starts telling these girls to bugger off to another server cos they're idiots.

There's nothing better than seeing a hater get their come-uppance.

Also have i missed the life lesson's 1-13 or is that a life lesson in itself?

September 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKalcifer

I haven't really encountered any hate during the course of playing WoW (since before BC came out) compared to the stories above. That said...

I was on my main -- an enhancement shaman -- about a month or two back and was watching the trade channel to see if there'd be anything I might want (and occassionly I'd be the one trying to sell). Shouldn't have been a big deal, right?

Unfortunately, the trade channel was filled with spam coming from several other players. I very much try to avoid responding to spam with spam, but it got to the point where I had to say, "Please take it to general or whisper, not trade."

That got under their proverbial skin, so they switched their conversation to bashing me. It got bad enough that I had to leave the trade channel so I didn't have to see it all. (Those people weren't the only ones spamming, by the way. I would have had a very full ignore list if I had done /ignore.)

All that was back when I was still on Thorium Brotherhood. I've recently transferred to Malfurion and its trade channel is no better off. At least Frostwolf didn't have this problem.

So to all people, don't spam the trade channel with your conversations. Please take them where they're supposed to be in (general, whisper, or a custom) so that everyone can have an easier time trying to conduct business.

Me: "trade channel was filled with spam coming from several other players."

"Those people weren’t the only ones spamming, by the way."

You: ???

Me: Those "several players" weren't the only ones spamming the trade channel. They were just the most "vocal" and persistant. Hope that clears up any confusion.

My hater story was about 4 years ago when I had started to play WoW. This was the first time I have played an MMO and felt at a disadvantage. I had asked for some help on the mechanics of the game and whatnot. The human priest had offered to level me up faster by taking me to STV. Now, once I had gotten there, he had hearthed and left me there. A group of horde had ganked me and camped for a while. Also at the time, I did not know that you can regen at healer, and that I could hearth myself. Never knew of these functions.

After that, I had quit WoW for a year and revisited, and still continue to play to this day.

i have more than my fair share being very nice and calm gets me into more fights than anything but this was the most idiotic

one day me and a friend of mine were in sw waiting for bgs and somebody comes up to us and asks for 100g of course we say go farm it yourself
then he starts spaming trade cuzz i gone said farm it yourself he makes and ass outtah himself and calls me a newb for being mean and not helping him out after about 2 hours of people yelling at him and /ingore from hundreds of people he makes alts and more alts finaly he stops we hoped he done gone away well he did 1 year later we find him farming yes there are haters and there are haters that learn

Well let’s see...
I recently got kind of bored of hunter after playing for a year and a half so I rolled a warrior. On this warriors 2nd trip into deadmines maybe third I got a bad priest, wouldn't stop putting a shield on my so she would have to heal, not healing me, me having to heal myself, etc.
Well during the smite fight I had heard about if you stand back far enough you would not get stunted. (Didn’t work) I made my plain clear to the group and the pally in my group tanked. Now I made sure I helped kill both rouges before I backed off. Well when the plan failed I rushed after the last stun and helped killed him. no while ever ones manaing up and eating she starts going on that I abandoned the group and etc. she would listen that i was trying something out and that it failed and said that she wouldn't be healing me for the rest of the instance (just the boat) well I snapped at her that It wouldn't make a difference because she wasn't doing very much to begin with.
We mostly wiped at one point accept for her who some how got on the wheel where you dot pull aggro. Then she rezz everyone else but refuses to rez me and /spits on my body. the pally rezzs me and we continue on I /ignored her for the rest of the instance(last two bosses) and we wipe total wipe on the VC cause she doesn't even do anything to the people she was still talking to.
p.s. my retort when she did the /spit was "I don’t know how I’ll ever get this virtual spit off"

Sorry for any misspellings

"..I got a bad priest, wouldn’t stop putting a shield on my so she would have to heal, not healing me, me having to heal myself, etc."

I'm going to assume you weren't tanking as you said later on the pally in your group tanked. If you were tanking then please ignore my comments.

If you were dpsing this priest was doing exactly the right thing. At a Deadmines level priests have very few of our group healing tools. Most of our focus has to be on the tank. You should be pleased the priest shielded you at all, and saying that it is 'bad' healing shows you don't understand the priest class I'm afraid. Shield is our first stop for looking after dpsers who are getting hit. We don't have time to heal you AND keep the tank alive. While the abuse that followed was uncalled for it really irritates me when people say they got a bad priest (especially when what you describe isn't bad play). Offer advice. Suggest they do something differently. Don't call them bad.

Silkath - 70 Holy Priest for 2 years and counting

PS Apologies if you were tanking. Of course a healer who doesn't heal the tank isn't doing their job properly.

You're lucky you're Horde on Malfurion. At least you don't have to put up with Maygestain on Alliance General Chat. My /ignore list is getting full also. I'm at the point that if someone even says something complimentary of him or his clones, they get added to the /ignore list.

Hey! Love the blogs and love the site! I get more irritated when I get ganged up on and I'm a lower level than everyone involved. To me, it's akin to beating up the littlest kid on the playground. Oh, and not to be a hater, but it's "whether" not "weather" unless you are referring to an inclement hailstorm of ultimate disaster. Keeps up the good works!

Yesterday, approximately 8:00 pm on Laughing Skull.

Barrens chat.

Someone asked if they could get a high level to run WC for them. I said "sorry, but im a bit busy leveling a warrior atm, mebe tommorow i could" trying to be nice and all.

Next thing i know i get spammed by some douchebag saying you suck at leveling... and then put ME on ignore...
