Of course this would happen. I take the day off for some "house work" and am greeted by not just maintenance, but extended maintenance. At least by x o'clock - who knows when the servers will be up AND playable - I can wade through all the changes for v3.0.8 that Bastosa mentioned the other day. Until that time, we always have the patch notes to drool over/shake our fist at.
Yesterday's escapades into level 80 didn't go as well as one may have hoped. Apparently few people have off on Martin Luther King day, making it incredibly difficult to find a group to run with. I managed to swing only a third of the dungeons I wanted to do before I got fed up with spamming the channels. Despite the few runs, I did catch myself doing something unexpected.
Since the early days I have always used gear to compare myself to other players. Although gear != skill, it can show how dedicated you are to your toon. The assumptions made through the technique aren't always accurate, but in general, a toon with good gear while lacking enchants or sockets means that the player just got decked out, doesn't have the money, or does the bare minimum to look good. While checking how bad I looked in front of the PUG groups, I found another not-exactly-accurate way to measure players, Achievements.
I am one of the few people around these parts that isn't too found of Achievements. Aside from being an Xbox Live rip-off, I just didn't see much cause for them. Personally, I would rather something like WAR's Tome of Knowledge, a personal diary of sorts, rather than these arbitrary points. That being said, it can serve a purpose beyond bragging rights. Paired with a simple gear check, an Achievement check can lend you extra knowledge about your new teammate, partner or prospective guildmate.
There are actually a ton of ways this can be used, but here are a few examples.
- A player has good gear, but their achievement score is pretty low for a level 80 and lacking numerous dungeons. One could reasonably assume that the character is an alt or new player in general.
- A Druid has average gear, but a very high score, including most of the quest based objectives. Player probably enjoys the game for the universe and may intend on finishing everything the game has to offer. Likely to continue to subscribe for the foreseeable future.
- Character is decked out in an odd mix of PvP, PvE and crafted gear; has most of the PvP achievements completed. Get this player on your 2v2, 3v3, 5v5 and PvP guild ASAP, likely a min-maxer based on his eclectic gear choices.
I am pretty shocked that I never really thought of this useful aspect before. Perhaps I was blinded by my hatred of the Achievement system as a whole. At least we don't have to pay $50 a year to use it though. Anyone have some real-world examples? I know there has to be some GM's out there that have used this as part of their recruiting measures.

1st :)
Well it may be Extended, but Good News.
IT'S PATCH DAY!! :D
And your actually right, achivment's are important way's to tell what your Guild/Group member is and or was capable of doing. Especially if you see his Feat's of Strength.
Change your whole rep from Aldor to Scryer while being exalted with the argent dawn? "Dedicated Grinder!" (or that's what i call them, lol)
I believe that the Achievement system can be used to see how good he/she is or how much he/she played. You may have many of the achievements completed but not very good gear. That meas that you have been playing for a long time and that you don't have any luck at drops or that you played some time and found many groups in that time.
If you have good gear but few achievements it means that you don't play often or you don't find spots in raids and that when you find spots you have a godlike amount of luck.
If you look at every aspect of the system you may find out a truckload of info about that player. Ishe's a good dps, tank, healer? Is he is a good player? What is his character, type of play, everything?
In my opinion this System is not something to show off to the whole raid or the whole city, it's a way to interact with other people and for them to find more about you.
Yes! Recently I have had some FTL PUG's that make me want to cut off my hand and feed it to a dog. At last, on one H NEX run we keep wiping on Grand Magus Telestra. The Restro Shammy in the group (the only one I have never groupped up w/ before) started blamming everyone, either saying the tnak sucked or we wern't dps'ing fast enough on which point she spits and he gets killed first. After checking his gear, I found out he was sporting a varity of greens and 70 blues, and out of his armor spec as well. After I asked him about it, he got unusually offensive and started saying that he has had no problem on this before and that he has healed every heroic and raid wrath had to offer. After noticing he had no "Champion of the Frozen Wastes" title, I got the idea to compare achievments. Needless to say, the fresh 80 soon got replaced by another restro shammie w/ no problems the rest of the way through. Thank you Achievment system! :)
Great way to screen PUG members - link me xxx achievement as proof of completion.
It does have limits, my alt in BC is now my main so does not indicate my true experience in raid content - but easy to explain.
you know, I just relized somehting, today is patch day, on the same day as the inaugration....why not have change on the same day as a big change....damn blizzard, they had this planned...
Hopefully this patch will get some folks to make some Death Knights on some less crowded servers and start spending more time there. Could be a good way for people to transition off without committing to a full character move or abandoning their friends on their current server.
"At least we don’t have to pay $50 a year to use it though."
Actually, you have to pay at least $160 a year to use it. (6-month payment plan.) Can't earn WoW achievements without WoW.
What is realm list pls tell me
umm first off acheviements on Xbox are lame compared to WOW becasue alot of WOW acheviements are hard to get even with a friends help unlike xbox. Plus alot of acheviements get you sweet title rewards and sometimes mounts! so all and all i love them i feel they give me something to do when im doing nothing like just going to raid stormwind to get a bear which before there'd be no point, now however there is! By the way i only have ironforge left for the that acheviement so ill see all you allies soon and pwn your king! black war bear here i come...
You don't pay $160 a year for the Achievements, you pay for WoW and the Achievement system is just one facet of what WoW offers now.
Xbox Live you pay for the "privilege" to play online, and for Achievements. I miss Dreamcast...
I hate to burst you guys' bubbles, but it's not the first extended maintenance since WotLK came out without having a patch. In fact there were quite a lot of them. however this time it really is a patch :3
Anyway, I wish we could do more with the achievement system other than bribe how much time you spend/waste on the game, lol. I like the few titles, mounts and pets that you can get, but it's very few. It needs more rewards and maybe even something that actually allows you to buy something from the points, rather than just build them up.
On the other hand, yes it is a good way to check if the PuG is good or bad. Good gear alone isn't always enough, actions are. And there's where the achievement can come in handy like you basically said. Granted of course you do read it right, which some can't >.> Some do not seem to understand that having for example the explorer achievement (not pointing to you, Juggy) this person may be dedicated to the game, but not necessarily dedicated to do/know their part in the various team builds there can be.
I like that many of them reward me for things I would have fun doing on my own, but other people would consider a waste of time. As long as it's my time and not yours, how's that a problem? Anyway, The Explorer title is probably the best. I probably explored all of the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor on my first toon at level 28. Too bad it wasn't there back in day.
you don't have to pay to get xbox achiev's either, all games have them and silver accounts are free. i love the system in WoW, its just give you alot do when you don't have any thing else. also the titles, pets, and mounts are also really cool
i see the acheviements as a destraction to keep you playing longer, they mean very little as to how good or not good the person is. i have yet to come across any heroics that are hard, to screen peoples acheviements to see if there good is a joke, all it shows is they have no job and no life. i have an 830 acheviements points, and i know almost all the heroic boss fights and raid boss fights, sadly i am unlucky when it comes to gear. i have very little to show for the heroics that i have done. my point is that i hate the acheviements and will never grind them out because i think they are dumb, if i never have anything worth doing in this game when i log on, i will stop playing.
One way I've seen on Dragonblight (EU) is people only accepting those to HC's who have at least done that particular dungeon on Normal and have the achievement to prove it.
As you can guess they hardly relate at all to the skill of the actual player, but it is nice to have a group where everyone knows the dungeon fairly well. So that you don't have to waste too much time explaining all the required tactics for each boss.
I agree that it is a good way to check out other people, however you shouldn't look too much into just pvp and dungeons/ raids. Small guilds like the one im in, may find it difficult to do dungeons. And besides they might not have gotten to that point in the achievement system yet.
I'm trying to complete them all, but it's a long process as you surely know. Wich means some for of a systematic approach would be necessary.
Besides my computer is lagging as hell, with too many people around. This in turn also makes it hard to do raids, BUT doesn't mean i'm not good at playing my toon.
That was a bit long, but my point is.
It can be used to measure how good people are, HOWEVER don't blindly follow it. As it is not always correct.
