Quest Helper Functionality On PTR

Dumb & DumbererBlizzard Entertainment is well known for tapping their addon community for ideas.  They have implemented pieces of CT_RaidAssist, Omen Threat Meter, Deadly Boss Mods, SCT (Scrolling Combat Text), the various mods that allow chat customization and even the third party application of Ventrilo.  If changes to the mob tooltips on the PTR are anything to go by, the latest mod that the User Interface team has borrowed from is QuestHelper.  Quest information, which quest the target mob applies to and how many are needed, will now be displayed on applicable tooltips.

The discovery of this change has already sparked off a bit of controversy - as will any change when dealing with such a large community.  Which side of the camp do you fall on?  Do you feel that this addition to the standard UI is dumbing down the game further?  Or, is the modification a common sense, time saving change?  Is your immersion ruined?

I'll admit that I use Quest Helper to its fullest potential.  The mod enables me to get the most out of my playtime, which can be limited windows depending on that thing called life.  But I will agree that it is almost cheating, with its pinpoint mob locations and all.  At the same time, I always read the quest text for the story, even if the more important information - mob location hints - becomes redundant.

I believe that Blizzard found a perfect middle ground by implementing just one of Quest Helper's many features.  Players still have to do the hard work of finding a mob's location (for the love of god, read the quest text three times before you ask in General chat) before the tweak offers any benefit.  In its current implementation, I can't see how it could be "dumbing down" the game.  Is going to your quest log, jumping to the associated quest and reading the summary at the bottom difficult?  Not by any means.  When the changes go so far as to put a giant X on your map and say "You need to kill the mobs right here!" then the opposing camp can complain their heads off.

Till that time, it's just a friendly time saver to me.

Other games - notably Warhammer Online and their Tome of Knowledge - actually have Quest Helper-type functionality built into their basic UI.  WAR's implementation was heralded as one of the title's key features.  Heck, people went so far as to consider it innovative!  It seems that just because WoW didn't launch with it, adding it now would sully the "hardcore" memory.  Would it really be that horrible?

good post.
I love quest helper, didn't have it during TBC and dont know how i managed xD, intersting to see how this works out when it goes live

Man I hope I'm first. I think this is fine considering that it helps those of us rolling a new toon to get up faster and faster. Dumbing down the game assumes that we all care about the story...not true.

The way to aproach this is SIMPLE if theres a feature and you dont like it DONT use it! why must people complaing about changes that dont affect them directly. If you really want to be so hardcore then go ahead turn the feature off and go for pro. I think quest helper is a BIG help and cuts down on the frustration of leveling alts big time.

I think it's a good idea. I used to use QuestHelper, and I did feel like the pinpointing locations was a bit cheater-ific, but I loved the tooltip enhancements. Adding it to the game makes perfect sense. I think that it's a great idea for Blizzard to take ideas from the more popular addons, as long as it's done well, which they seem to have managed to do so far.

simple fact is remember those quests wher you have to kill ten mobs before the one with billy's luckey hat droped,

now you dont have to second guess yourself !

the part I will be interested to see is does the tooltip show "drops prison key" for quest objective "free five helpless NPC's" - which at least for now quest helper does not!

Never had Quest Helper before, and most likely never will. And is this thing something you can switch on/off in the Interface options? If it is it will most likely be off for me.

I agree with Claymore. Why would anyone complain about a feature that they can just turn off and not use. What difference does it make to one person how another plays the game (assuming that how they play the game is not illegal/breaking the rules i.e. botting)?

Some people believe the "real game" doesn't start until you hit 80. This will be a blessing for them as they can get to 80 faster. Some believe that the "real game" is getting to 80 and they stop playing toons once they hit 80. They probably won't care for this feature and will shut it off. To each their own.

This sounds more like quest guru than quest helper to me.

any sort of quest help i'm positive will be appreciated from hardcore raiders to those just starting out. Personally though, when it comes to addons i try and go for the most effective while using the minimal memory. Questhelper (with which i used with cartographer to get the full benefit) just caused too much lag and used to much memory. So i'm using carbonite now. It barely makes a dent in the memory usage and if just as effective imo

I started playing World of Warcraft in late 2006, but it wasn't until a couple of months before the release of WotLK that I heard about Questhelper. Does it take some of the challenge out of doing quests? Perhaps. But let me point this out: before I used Questhelper, I was frequently visiting websites such as Thottbot and WoWWiki. So what's the difference?

I noticed this on the ptr as well.
When I was waiting for the copy queue to empty up I was screwing around in mulgore checking out the new achievements and UI options,
while I was doing this I did a few quests and without having questhelper on the PTR client it was there, I don't think I was able to turn it off though.

It was only the tooltip of the mobs and nothing more,
but for a slight hiccup in questhelper as there tends to be, it at least fixes for having that (when two npcs have the same name, it will tell you to go to a place where the other one is).

*Does not like blizzard putting mod writers out of business*

*Does like blizzard catering for the people that haven't had the fortune of ever experiencing these mods*

You can't put mod writers out of business, since they're not allowed to sell their mods in the first place.

And it's not as if this is all carbonite/QH does.

bah dreads n double dreads , if ya cant read ur quest log and know how to draw concusions from them by now STOP PLAYING WOW...next pach type in /Find Mankrik's Wife n the quest compleets it self..seriously this is a option for lazy people

Well, lets be honest here. The quests in Wow are more or less copies of the same thing: kill Gnolls to get their teeth, kill murlocks to get their skin, kill earth elementals to get small rocks, kill children to get their candy etc.. No matter how you twist it in the quest explanation, it is just a grind to run around places and do the same easy things over and over. Why pretend it to be something else? There are only a handful of interesting quest chains in whole WoW that are somewhat story driven but the rest...

I have not read the quests in ages. There is just nothing worth reading in them.

March 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLemur

I think I will just keep using the Addon and turn off the Blizzard version. Just like everything else they implemented, it won't be as good as the community made it.

March 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDan

I use Quest Helper when I'm lvling alts. XD I've done these quests -HOW- many times already? I know the gist behind why I'm doing this, I may even remember what I'm supposed to kill and where it's at. But not always and it's nice to know without having to read the same thing over again.

And I admit, even with QH I will still pop open my Quest log to see where I'm going. I don't trust QH 100% as I have on a few occasions, been mislead by it.

I love that they added this feature i didn't use questhelper for the locations i use tom tom and light headed for that i used questhelper for the tooltips only its just one less addon for me.
