Taking Revenge on Roaming Elite Giants

stormgiantI still remember my first encounter with the terror of a Fel Reaver. It wasn't long after my first trip through the Dark Portal at a respectable level 58. I was heading along the main road - usually a fairly safe route. Then, I took the fork up toward Thrallmar, and stopped along the way to kill a Helboar annoyance. And made the unfortunate decision to turn my back on my destination.

Then, it came. The ground started shaking; first slightly, then more and more jarring. By the time I heard the Fel Reaver's loud, train-like warning sound, it was too late. I couldn't run. All I could do was fail at my feeble attempts to defend myself as the Fel Reaver stomped my tiny figure into oblivion. My fate was the same of that Helboar that happened into my path.

I think Blizzard has taken up some kind of sick fascination with terrorizing the comparatively tiny folk that take up residence in Outland and now Northrend. The torment started with the Fel Reaver and continued with the Storm Giant roaming in the Howling Fjord and Thrym the Hope Ender, who patrols the first major corridor you come upon in Zul'Drak. With a name like that, you know what to expect. All of them are giant; all are significantly higher level than the rest of their zone; and all are elite. A combination that makes them basically impossible to fight off when caught alone. Which, if you're not careful, can happen way too often.

devilsaurWe've faced similar creatures in Azeroth, too, such as the Devilsaurs that bludgeon unsuspecting questers in Un'Goro Crater. And every time I meet a new behemoth, I make a vow. The tyrants must pay - I will have my revenge.

It already has begun. The Devilsaurs that once frightened my pre-Outland rogue are now no more menacing than a Helboar. Upon my return to Un'Goro recently for the Noblegarden requirements, the dino learned my wrath.

Now, a quest line in Zul'Drak has furthered my vengeance. After your assistance with freeing the captured Storm Giant Gymer, he allows you to ride his back for some fun from the perspective of a giant.

The best part - slaying Thrym, the prowling, undead menace stitched together from the corpses of other storm giants.

Die, Thrym, die!!

Revenge is not a pretty thing. But it sure is satisfying.

Anyone else enjoy going back to terrorize the elite giants that once had you cowering in fear? What are some of your own tales of getting beat-down by behemoths, then returning a later day for pay back?

oh definitely. I just bested the Storm Giant that roams Howling Fjord who put me through some rough moment on my way to 80, but he finally paid for it. Also the quest line in Zul'Drak is really nice and I actually killed him twice cause someone else was doing the quest too but he died :) Also, as a hunter, I went back to Un'Goro and got one of those beasties as a pet just for fun :) So, I believe it's true. Vengeance isn't pretty but damn sure it's fun.

I've killed the fel reaver several times on my paladin although I've never been bested by any of these behemoths.

Actually never had a whole lot of trouble with giants in this game, but I do remember getting constantly demolished roaming by gryphons in one of Everquest's starting zones.

I'll admit fel reaver got me a few times... about it though.

As once stated by a wise mage In Jimmy : World of Warcraft Story.

EVERQUEST SUCKS!!!

I go out of my way when collecting my jewels in Nagrand each month to give Durn a good asskicking!

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterlawman30

Durn is a good one to spank when you are in Nagrand. Then there are the Grull things in Blade's Edge that get in the way of farming. Fel Reaver has got to be the ultimate spank when seeking revenge on old nemesis' though.

i have no stories to share because i always seem to notice the giant things that fill the screen, most of which shake the screen and make loud noises, approaching and get out of the way.

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDaVoid

Since the crater, anything that covered half the screen has since felt my blades sink into there digital skin. I can't tell you how many times the devilsaurus killed me, but the fel reaver only made me part of the dirt road a couple times. Now the roaming giants in Grizzly Hills really made mush out of me. I was having a good time farming skins till I made my way over there. Until I hit 80 I didn't finish the quests. Now I have made them pay and I loved the quest to throw rocks from above. Revenge is a dish best served cold. And what better place then Northrend to set up the buffet.

good post Pixie!!

@Tinkee

There's a reason I never made it past Level 5!

Oh the Dreaded Fel Reaver back in BC. Many a time when i was questing with my m8, we would hear the ground shake, and then look in both directions. And run for our lives . Most of the time we got away, but he did get us several times.
Other moments have been when all my buddy did, was take a break to go to the toilet or whatever, and i was waiting for him watching on screen. Then the Fel Reaver came along, and my buddy was still afk, and as he lives a few miles from me, i couldnt shout get out of the way. So i ran to a safe distance and watched his pet who was on defensive, fail miserably and then down went my m8. He comes back and he was like WTF? I was secretly LMAO. But typed to him FR. He knew what i meant then.

And the thorim giant fight is fun. Indeed revenge is sweet. Hell i even go to ashenvale and kill the elite dragonkin that hang around about in the area, the temple of.. i forget who. But im sure you know who i mean.

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteronthebuses

indeed i took my vangence on those who gave me touble and not just those big elite giants all who gave me problems VC stocks the bastards in stonewatch keep beack when they still elite the bastard mongels tehy all felt the extant of my wrath as i got higher i have bigger problems such the devisaur who rarely ever killed me but did attemp many times i would either fake death when i was on my hunter or pop my frost barrier on my mage and run like hell then when he got of me eat/drink/heal aand give him a taste of thier own madacine when entering outland i me the fel reaver i stood no chance against his feet and he would often stomp on me whne i am low on healph tehn i saw it in general "has anyone seen the fel reaver" i gladly helpmed him find the bastard and i watched his matel ass fall to ground difeated and i would laugh then higher level i perticapated in the hunt my self ii am sad to say that i cant solo him yat but he isnt causing me anymore problems most of the time i am able to avoid him how ever the overlord the drill master and other such beings felt the cold chill of my frost bolt i was tired to farm those elite basards for taht seed so i got on my mage to teach am a little lesson and last but sertainly not least doomlord kazzak haad finnaly ziped the lip as he was full of my hunters bullets ever since entering NRi felt the need to take my revenge on many but it was sweet to show thrym who is the better giant

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered Commentercocopuff

I got stomped on by that Fell Reaver more then my fair share. Why is the ground shaking? Stomp! Let me finish killing this Hell Boar...stomp!

The first solo kill of a Fell Reaver on my hunter was one of the most satisfying moments in my WoW life.

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHardcor

I'm not sure if the Fel Reaver or King Mosh was my bigger nemesis. Quite possibly Mosh and his devilsaur cohorts who silently sneaked up behind me. I never died by their hands...claws...robotic manipulators? But the Fel Reaver has caused me to run from it and straight into a group of mobs.

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCuppincakes

Oh how I went back on my Hunter and slaughtered the Devilsaurs when I hit 70. But then, naturally, when I wanted to tame one come 3.0, I couldn't find a single one for over an hour!

Ironically, I found the devilsaur by tailing a lvl 55 through the zone. lvl 55's are like bait for 'em.

Fel Reaver... how many times I got caught off guard by him just because I forgot to turn my sound up after landing in Hellfire.

Revenge is all mine...

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRikaku

Ah, good ol' stroll down memory lane... I remember having problems with the elite's in Nagrand, Durn and those mini-Gruuls in particular. When WotLK came and I had leveled to 80 with some good gear, it was pwning time. >:)

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlayea

Oh yes, the Devilsaur definitely bit the dust when I was high enough in level. Him and the elite dragonkin that, for reasons still unknown to me, inhabit places like norhern feralas and eastern wetlands. It was a day of vengence indeed.

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJaxer

hehe... once i got stomped by a reaver, and then upon resurrection, pulled him into thrall mar and had the guards kill him for me. revenge is sweet :)

June 10, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHund

They're not always big. I remember levelling my Undead Warlock many years ago in Silverpine Forest (maybe level 11 or so) when I came across a Son of Arugal, an elite level 20 that wanders the zone.

June 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterZarinn

@Zarinn:
Every Forsaken player has met the Son of Arugal and i bet every Forsaken Players has come back to that place to one-shot him on lvl 80.
I know I did :)

June 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterQuetlan of Bloodhoof

Yup came back and pwned the many many things that took a massive bite out my poor holy priesty as I was levelling.

Just recently I was doing some quests in Un'Goro (The Seeker and Loremaster will be mine!!) and I swear every Devilsaur in the zone thought I was still 50-55 when I quested there 1st time around because 3 of them 'tripped' over me in about a 10 minute period.

June 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDyra

Fel reavers? Durn? Storm Giants? Pfft.....
Hogger is the one i need to watch out for, so many times i forgot and wonder into the Gnol area for my quests on an alt and get absolutly slaughtered by him and his 666hp :O

June 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBveryon

@Bveryon, I was going through the posts and wonder why Hogger was never mentioned at all. Hogger is probably the lowest level example of Blizzard trying to kill it's players. Although, since I always done my questing in Dun Morogh, I generally didn't have trouble with Hogger. Vagash and Old Icebeard on the other hand...

I also remember Mor'Ladim in Duskwood. Pre-BC, these wandering elites didn't have warning lights and sounds, it was only "why am I getting hurt so mu... WTF? I'm dead!"

Stitches was also a nice surprise if you caught him along the road (where it was supposedly safe!) Stitches was probably one of the worst, I think he was level 35 that would beat down level 45 characters in the Pre-BC game. Probably one of the toughest, at his level, Elites outside of an instance. An early version of Patchwerk.

Sometimes they didn't need to be elite either, I remember the level 19 Air Elementals in Westfall being troublesome... however, at least you had a chance to escape them.

For the most part, the giants NPC's like the Fel Reaver never gave me much issue, it's the surprise Elites mobs that were normal sized that had me dead before I new what happened. Mor'Ladim, as I mentioned surprised me because I just didn't know I was in trouble until I saw I was at 10% health.

I'd say overall, the Storm Giants and Fel Reaver bothered me the most simply because it interrupted my ability to quest when I had to move out of the way. Oh, and the same for the Devilsaurs in Un'goro, but the Devilsaurs were easy to stay out of the way of, since they didn't go near any trees, and most of the questing was done out of their paths. The Fel Reaver and Storm Giants pissed me off the most though cause I'd move to their left or right, and they'd always turn towards the way I tried moving to get out of their path, and the npc's I was fighting while trying to move would suddenly perma-daze me when trying to get out of the way too.

King Mosh though is the only elite I've not been able to exact my revenge on, I've just never been able to find him, and he killed me once. The other Devilsaurs were pretty easy to find and kill, and if you had a tank class and a heal class, you could duo the Devilsaurs around level 50-52.

June 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBlight

I sure remember the good ole fel reaver my ex used to call it her other boyfriend and ran towards it just to die then laughed and went on with things. Well when I hit 80 on my warrior I decided that the time for revenge was now and that bastard that killed me so many times while leveling would pay. So i went out there and conquered and has almost full health then I danced on his dead body....o how revenge is sweet.
