Brewfest 2009: Hungover Already

Which is the Dark Iron Dwarf, and which is the keg? They're both short and fat - your guess is as good as mine! |
As iTZKooPA already pointed out in his detailed Brewfest guide, the onset of this merriest of holidays brings with it a host of achievements and quests to keep us amused while chugging enough beer to dizzy even the stoutest of dwarves. I didn't get too into Brewfest last year, since I was low-level and focused on changing that. So this year I was excited to dive right in from the start. So why am I already hungover from all the content we have to do for the event?
I think it's because two of the repeating themes of the holiday revolve around two of my least favorite antics: performing actions when not being able to see anything (in this case, because of drunken blurriness), and controlling a mount (for Brewfest, a ram) that has built-in limitations. For some of you, these may be your most favorite in-game tricks ever! But for me, not so much.
I like the concept of Brewfest, and of course, knocking back some drinks should have some side effects on the drinker. Usually, I think the in-game drunk effect of blurred vision and the inability to walk straight is pretty funny. And I still enjoyed it the first couple of times around. But then I had to get smashed over and over again to catch Wolpertingers, find pink elekks, jump off a ledge in drunken stupor and, of course, fight back Dark Iron Dwarves intent on stealing our brew.
Day one of Brewfest, it took my server only a couple of tries to win the epic battle by smashing those thieves over the head repeatedly with a giant mug. There's been some debate over whether this is bug-related or just because people aren't targeting the dwarves right, but both Monday and yesterday, amidst post-patch-lag, we had absolutely no luck in winning the fight. Which means 20 less tokens so far, but that could add up to a lot more if we don't get with the program.
Maybe I'm being too hard on the ram quests. They're not that horrible, once you get the right whipping rhythm down for keeping them at a steady pace without getting fatigued. Just don't make the mistake of being in a group when you complete them. I've had two separate occasions already in which only one person in a group was able to turn in the Bark For... quests, then it would automatically fail the other person. Once again, that could be a bug or it could be Blizzard's way of preventing people from having an easier time completing the quests because they could ride on the coattails of someone else.
One thing I have been thoroughly enjoying is whipping up on Coren Direbrew and getting some sweet loot. If you group up right and use your alts, you can get in quite a few runs every day on this guy and keep trying for those mounts and weapons!
So has anyone else been having a hard time fighting back the Dark Iron Dwarves? What other bugs have you encountered? Despite my frustrations with a couple I've come across, I'm aiming to get Brewmaster - so that's enough to keep me chugging. Cheers!

BREWFEST!!! Grrr...... the mana beer doesnt help in Ulduar...
You can get rid of the blurry, drunken haze by disabled the "Full Screen Glow Effect" in the video settings.
It's crap that we in the EU realms are screwed straight away out of 40 tokens cos we can't do the quests. And blizzard's excuse is shoddy cos if you drink enough, you see the elekk and the wolpertinger's anyway.
I did find the keg thing bug a couple of times tho cos i ran up to the goblin and he wouldn't throw me a keg and i had to run around in circles for a bit before he threw one.
No problems with fighting the dwarves back on the horde side of Skywall server. And I've gotten 4 trinkets from direbrew, but no mount sighting yet. :-(
Only glitch I have seen is an inability to buy beer outside of Org. Easily solved the problem by going to the Brew camp in UC.
And my Ret pally has the ram and the remote offa Coren, hoping to get the kodo on my DK, tho.
"There and Back Again", the quest where you have to get and then deliver the kegs on the Ram is actually a lot less stressful than people make it.
Just smack that Ram until he hits his Gallop, and, along the way, run past the little Fruit Baskets laying out. Each time your run past the Basket, your Ram's Fatigue will drop back to zero, making it possible to have a constant Gallop the whole time. Just hit the 2 in the middle every time, going both directions, and then the one in the back of the "Pen" where the mounts are being displayed. It's possible to get up to 18 tokens with this strategy, from what I've read.
Also, remember, you don't have to ride all the way to the pick up and drop off points. Get close enough and they'll throw you the keg. I've actually been able to "Jump-Turn" at the point where I pick up the keg. It'll show that the keg is in my inventory, but the animation of the keg flying at me will be delayed so much, that it won't catch up until half-way back. Ah, computer programming.... :-)
Should be able to get a few more on the Alliance side than 18 as I've heard we have it a little easier on that quest.
And the loss of 20 tokens would only be for that half an hour. The dwarves attack every half hour, and leave behind a cog that hands out a daily quest. So you can attempt to kill the dwarves as many times as you like, but can only hand in the quest once per day. We have a high population server, so have never failed it. Just wait for a more peak time.
There isn't any trick to it. Just bind the Sampler to a number key and spam it. You do not need to target the Dark Irons at all - it's handled automatically. When the big Superbrew tankard appear, run over it and it'll give a buff and head for the biggest group of mole machines, or any group of dwarves at a barrel. If you know what you're doing, it can probably be completed with 2 people per barrel and 1 person picking up the Superbrew buffs (should you need to assemble a team to do it).
Yes, i´m with you.
We have to make sacrifices to get what we want.
And i want to be a Brewmaster.
Really tired of that Jenkins title, hehe
I had never had the drunk effect on a flying mount before. The up and down and left and right. Makes me feel sick thinking about it. You would think the drake would know nose-diving at the ground was less than optimal even if the rider was drunk.
@Irishi, you only have to hit the 2 apple barrels in the middle. Just yesterday, I was able to get 24 tokens doing this quest. You just need to get close enough to the guy that tosses the keg for him to throw it. You'll save yourself 1-2 seconds per run which will add up to about 4 or 6 more tokens. The best route I found for the alliance is to head out stay to the left of the bridge and aim right the apple barrel, then hit the next one. They'll be a little stone fence by the guy tossing you the keg you just have to go past the end of that. I just mouse turn around there and head back, hitting both apple barrels. They'll be a large tree by the guy you turn the keg into just hook around it and you'll have the turn in. Rinse repeat.
The iron dwarf one is kind of crazy. The key to is they all head off in one direction to a keg and start attacking. Some might even spawn right in front of a keg but head to a completely different one. I wait to see which ones are closest to me and coming right at me. You don't aim in the traditional sense, the mug basically flys in a sort of straight line directly in front of you, you'll need to turn to face the dwarf you what to fire your mug at. Oh, the Iron dwarfs will kick you out of the way on the way to the front of the barrel. My trick is stand on the side of the barrel toward the back inbetween the keg and tent . That's the shortest throw distance for the guys tossing you mugs plus none of the iron dwarfs will kick you because you're not in their way.
The barker quests is easy but a trick most ppl don't know is that once you get the last flag you can dismount and get on your normal mount to turn the quest in. So you can basically go all out to get to the last flag and not have to worry about fatigue on the way back.
BTW, to get the meta all you need is 350 tokens. The token system allows you to run in the apparel for 2 hours after you get it. So you spend the 350 tokens to get the gear turn it back for a refund use the 200 tokens to get the brew of the month membership. Then you'll have about 150 left to get the Pink Elekk, Pony Keg or Beer Googles.
Well, my record for tokens in "There and Back Again" is 34, although it was for the Alliance which seems easier compared to the Horde one. And I gotta say, I love the token system.
