Pre-Cataclysm: Overcloaked

Long-time readers will know that I'm not a big fan of tabards. Most are bright, ugly, and cover up all that neat armor that you spent so much time earning in dungeons. Not to mention, there are ostensibly better ways of showing your guild pride (such as regaling the denizens of Trade Chat with tales of your l33tness or posting embarrassing videos of your raid leader yelling to Youtube).

So tabards suck. But what about sexy, fashionable overcloaks? Now, that's an idea worth backing!

What little we know about these new vanity items (data-mined by MMO-Champion from the latest build of 3.3.3) indicates that they're currently attached to Pre-Cataclysm events. Specifically, those that we already know something about, like the reclamation of Gnomeregan and the Echo Isles.

They currently come in four distinct flavors. Two lean towards the usual faction identity: a runic symbol for the Horde and the familiar lion's head for the Alliance. The others feature emblems representing the Gnomish people and the Darkspear Trolls, in accordance with the events mentioned above.

This is to say that even though these are the only models in the game right now, it's highly likely that we'll see more of them added in the near feature. Undoubtedly one for each major race and, if all goes well, guild-specific overcloaks, as well!

Whether or not these items will become permanent fixtures in the game is currently unknown, but what we can tell you is that they won't replace the gear currently found in your Back slot. Instead, they can be worn purely as vanity items, replacing your existing cloak visually, but not negating its stats or special effects.

We'll keep you posted as to how and when you'll be able to obtain overcloaks, but chances are it won't be for awhile. It's due course for remnants of future content to start appearing in the files of earlier patches (at least to those capable enough to find them), and considering the relation of overcloaks to Pre-Cataclysm events, you can bet we won't be seeing them as early as 3.3.3.

i wouldn't mind having those, now that u mention it i have never really even seen my chest armor! that tabard is just in the way! clocks can have some pretty cool lines and stuff on em, but not like the chest peices. and even when you want to see how a chest peice looks, you have to go to the character tab and unequip it then ctrl click it. not a big ting but annoying.
-first btw!-

Well, i'm hoping that they go all the way and totally do away with tabards, and turn them into overcloaks, instead of taking up a bank/bag slot, why not equip them like your titles?
