I Don't Care About Your "Ding"

While there is plenty of serious news and questions coming out of the recent release of Wrath… there is a bit of a tangent I need to discuss.

It is something awful that has cropped up that I have been blissfully sheltered from for the last several months. It is the reemergence of the DING. Let me just say I hate it when people say "ding" after they level, I absolutely despise it.

With Wrath out and everyone leveling again our /g is once again filled with people begging for attention over their virtual accomplishments. There are certainly some dings that are less annoying than others. A pre-wrath ding 70 would get a "grats" from me. Now a "ding 80" will get the same, but that’s about it.

It’s when people ding 47 or 64, or god forbid 12 that really makes me questions peoples sense of accomplishment and need for personal validation by reading a half-hearted “grats.” Personally, I have 5 characters level 60 or higher… now if I said ding every time one of my toons got bathed in yellow light, I would have annoyed my guild mates around 300 times now. With the recent experience nerfs leveling is really not that big of a deal. Sure, enjoy your new abilities, but don’t you don’t need to tell the whole world about it…. or even if you do find a better way to do it.

I really don’t have a problem with people announcing exciting new gear, or a rare crafting recipe, or even a big purchase, at least that stuff is interesting to talk about. But do you really think I care that the number next to you name is one digit higher? Let me just say, I don’t.

With the release of the achievement system every 10 levels is automatically announced anyway, so now there is no need for anyone to say ding anymore... ever.

Please everyone, I implore you, stop saying it. It’s needy and annoying. If you happen to be a member of the Totally Rad Guild, just remember my ability to take away your guild chat privileges is just one click away.

I fully agree with you.

My guild's reasonably large and also has a policy that allows as many alts as you like. If someone announces ding in gchat imagine how fast it scrolls off with all the variants of 'congratulations'. And with all respect, we all went to the same leveling process. While you may feel your achievement warrants some special congratulations, it is not much different from anyone else's.

Not that my guild limits, restricts or encourages it, but I am not contributing to it.

DING :D

eventhough i agree with you i couldnt resist :P

Someone who "dings" on a regular basis is a sad, sad person. How desperate and lonely must one be, to feel that something so insignificant is worthy of others' attention ?

As you already know dear dingers, few people give a fuck about your amazing accomplishment. So why insist ? You either want to annoy us, or you're so utterly stupid that you think we'll eventually care. Well, we never will.
At lvl 54 you're still the same average nobodies that you were at lvl 1.

If you need attention so bad, please do something with your lives (yes, in the real world) and stop looking for love and appreciation in a videogame.

Poor Bast...so many people against him, and quite rudely by some I might add. /smirk

If people feel like wasting guild chat with a ,ehem, "ZOMG!!!! DING!!!" There is only a simple solution..../ignore Asswipe.

Not only the word ding makes me angery, but its the people who say "grats" who grind my gears. if you really cared that somone else, not yourself, gained a level why dont you just type out congragulations. is it really that hard? are people really that lazy? i mean sure ill say cangragulations to a freind who just hit 70/80 but honestly unless they do that i put them on ignore. i have about 500 people on ignore and im not satisfied yet.

To Bast, I usually love your blog post but this one seems more like just a rant rather than anything productive or insightful. To some extent I agree, lvl 30 , lvl 60, lvl 70 u should say ding but lvl 71-80 should be also these are big feast for some people getting a over a million experience. In my guild, which is another pod cast guild, encourages it. Our guild leaders have a Mod called guild greet which give a automated message that someone dinged.

I know that’s TRG is your guild and i have no say in how it's run but I can have an opinion. Taking guild chat away just for saying just screams dictator emphasis on DIC.

What a toolbag. As public as this blog is, do you really want to be the guy known as the douche that can't get over "Ding"? Lighten up. It sounds like the feeder guild is a fun place to be. TRG? No thanks...

When I leveled in Vanilla Wow, I was in a guild of friends that had carried over from another mmorpg. Because of the tight knit group, we did care about each others achievements as it played into our general progression as a guild. I personally only did it on multiples of 10, but really even anything past 40 in the beginning took awhile. I took a break before BC came out and only got back into WoW this summer. I wasn't guilded as I leveled to 70, so dinging wasn't possible. I recently joined a new guild and "dinged" in gchat for the first time in a long time. It's a new guild that is forming up players to be able to do endgame raiding in wotlk. I didn't ding for the gratz (although I did thank people who did), but rather to inform the guild that I am making an effort to make it to 80 as quickly as possible for the guild. If I were unguilded, I would probably take my time leveling up professions and my death knight.

With a large, established guild like The Totally Rad Guild, I can understand why the guild leadership might restrict dinging due to the sheer volume making it more spam that true information. The appropriate way to enforce this would be to explain why it is not conducive to guild chat. Instead, Bastosa issues a threat and Feralface spews out scything remarks, The Totally Rad Guild appears to be anything but rad. You guys come off as insolent jerks! Knights of Radshire, on the other hand, is totally rad in my opinion.

I couldn't agree more, however i do think that the old 70 now 80 ding is ok.

Bast the r worse things in WoW than ding....dirge is 1 of them...

oh and DIIIIIIIIIIIING! X3

@ Feralface go Fuck ur wall

TRG? mor like Big WAAAAAAAAH guild

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on ding. If you want to have a guild policy on it's use, then by all means do so.

The one thing I have taken away from this discussion is that Feralface is wound a bit to tight and I personally think he/she is giving his/her guild a bad name.

I'd say there's a lot of haters posting comments, but they can't spell, so they don't count :)

And for the record, there's no "e" in angry. Are isn't spelled "r". You isn't spelled "u". Come on people.

November 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterShaun

Sure, if you just say it to get attention or rub it on people's noses, then yeah, keep it to yourself. But some do find it a real achievement to reach certain levels and are so happy they dinged that they want to "share the happiness". Call it naive, but some people do that. However those people also can't realistically imagine oneself what others would think >.>
However there's no reason to get this pissed off about others saying ding. You should just ignore and move on >.> The game doesn't involve around them just as much as it doesn't involve around you. I'd say give it a good night sleep before you decide to make it a guild-regulation. If you let that regulation be based on anger/frustration, you're no better than them.

November 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterVirago

I don't want your ding. I don't need your ding. Get your ding out of my face!

STOP SLAPPING ME AROUND WITH YOUR DING!!!

November 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMarchell

What a pompous, arrogant douche pump. If I type a ding in guild chat, you're going to take away my guild chat privileges? Jawohl, mein Fuhrer!!!! I bow to your epic forum troll failure.

If only there was a way to /ignore Bastosa's childish, whiny ranting from here on out.

November 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterVexklythor

Oh, Bast, what have you started. I think the rest of the posts made my day on just how everyone feels. Whether they are just playing devils advocate or not.

Ah well, you can't please them all. Nothing wrong with a rant in my view. Sometimes you just need to get it off of your chest.

Subject for next rant - When the HELL are they going to fix the LFG channel?!?! Or have requirements for the Trade channel. I can't talk to anyone in Party or Guild if I am in a major city. Damn people!!

November 21, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNylow

@ Vexklythor
We have the right to dislike giddy losers who basically beg for a pat on the back every time they do something mundane like gaining a level.
Be considerate and announce your incredibly heroic deed only at 60, 70 or 80.

Oh, and Bastosa's rant isn't childish. Your nazi reference is.

November 21, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterstupid kids ruined WoW

Everyone bitching about how mean Bastosa is ... you *know* you want to raid with them and you would at the drop of a hat. :P

If you are a serious raiding guild, like it seems this one is, saying ding is the pure equivalent of saying "I am a total noob - i will pwn you with my one green item that makes me OP over you with all white NPC gear."

For a serious raider, leveling is not interesting other than people learning how to play their character for a raid or pvp.

If you want to say ding if your /g, dont join a serious raid guid. If you DO want to say ding in /g, join one of the random guilds that fade away after a few months and say ding all you want. Or dont join a guild at all and just say /1 ding. that way you can get your happiness out there for your accomplishment and Bastosa and other serious raiders can turn off the channel or /ignore . There, now everyone is happy.

November 21, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterpenrose

I cant beilve this has made it on to your home page as a news item. You need to get a grip of yourself and stop thinking your so self important. So what if they say ding there is an ignore channel you know. So stop waisting my time posting lame as crap like this.

November 21, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterzat

@penrose: well said.

I still consider myself a new player, and I'm in a questing/leveling guild. We say ding; I say ding. We encourage it.

That said, I understand how a raiding guild would not be amenable to it. I'm not sure if removing chat privileges is a method of discipline I'd agree with, but if it's an acceptable form within the guild, then who am I to criticize your guild management?

It's easy to turn this into a guildvsguild thing, but the two guilds have different goals. I'll admit it, I'd love to join TRG on raids - and I encouraged Harue to join because I knew he wanted to. I respect the guild rules you all have imposed, after all, all rules have a reason, even though we may disagree with them.

Until I don't feel like a new player... I will not be comfortable joining a raiding guild.

I still remember, when I first started playing, when I first joined k http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Executus&n=Randalthorr" rel="nofollow">Randalthorr dinged 70... I remember being so excited for him.
