Guide to the Argent Tournament

Tis Only A Flesh Wound

It has been nearly a week since the Argent Tournament launched alongside patch 3.1 and there remains much confusion about the new addition to solo gameplay.  Solidsamm started the festivities late last week, but Blizzard created the contest in such a way that progression through the various stages moves at a smooth pace.  You never feel that the next step is out of reach, just a few days away.  Damn them knowing how to dangle that carrot so perfectly!

You're a bit behind if you haven't started your dailies by now, as the first Champions will be crowned today, but don't let that stop you.  To help you on your journey we have compiled all you need to know about the Argent Tournament's daily quests in a neat little post, rather than spread across the great reaches of WoWHead.  Since many of the new NPCs are still unknown to WoWHead, we will also present you with their locations where needed.

Before we dive into the daily quests we need to get you situated and out to the tournament grounds.  The grounds are located in the northeastern part of Icecrown, directly above Sindragosa's Fall.  As you fly into the area you'll be greeted by the first two dailies that are sheerly for monetary gain, A Chip Off the Ulduar Block and Jack Me Some Lumber.  They have nothing to do with the tournament, outside the illusion that you will be helping the crusaders build the actual Coliseum.  At this point you should familiarize yourself with the new camp, as it is quite large.  Fly around and pick up all the quests you see, you should find the following four quests in addition to the previous pair:

1.  The Black Knight of Westfall/Silverpine - This begins the Black Knight quest chain that progresses throughout you tournament ambitions.  Just do the damn quest chain, it's a pop culture reference that shouldn't be missed.
2.  Mastery of Melee/The Charge/The Shield-Breaker - These three quests are designed to teach you the basics of horse combat.  Grab your steed and head to the dummy location noted on the above map.  They are a cakewalk.<br>
3. Up To The Challenge - Now that you've mastered the basic moves of jousting, you can begin your run to Champion.  This quest forces you to collect Aspirant's Seals, which are rewarded from the following quests.  You can complete this in three days time if you do all the dailies offered to you.  *NOTE* One of the last three quests will be assigned, not all of them.

  • Training in the Field - The easiest of the travel-based quests.  Most people just head down to Sindragosa's Fall and kill the Scourge running around there.  For obvious reasons it can become crowded - and a PvP zone - so you may want to venture a little further out.

  • Learning the Reins - You'll essentially be repeating the set of Mastery quests from earlier.  Very easy.

  • A Blade Fit for a Champion - For some odd reason being in the guise of a frog allows the cursed maiden to protect the blade better.  We cannot free her unless we lay a wet,s loppy one upon her pursed lips.  Head over to Ashwood Lake and spam this macro (/use Warts-B-Gone Lip Balm /kiss) on the frogs you come across.  Eventually you will find her and receive the blade.

  • The Edge of Winter - Another quest that is heavy on the travel.  First you have to head to lower Crystalsong Forest and kill Lord Everblaze, he respawns incredibly quickly, thank god.  Snag his Everburning Ember and then head out to the Maiden of Winter's Breath Lake and melt her Ice Block.  Done.

  • A Worthy Weapon - Head down to the Ironwall Dam that separates Icecrown and Crystalsong Forest to collect the Winter Hyacinths growing there.  Upon collecting four weeds, head north of Naxxramas and offer the dandelions to another maiden.

4.  Aspirant's Challenge - When you turn in your 15 Aspirant's Seals for Up To The Challenge you will be given that challenge, defeating your first jouster.  Head over to Squire David by the training dummies to begin you battle.  Your first battle will be an easy one, use Shield-Breaker and then Melee for the easy win.

5.  A Valiant of Capital City - Yay, you won!  Now you can head to the next level of jousting, the Valiant rank.  Fly to your faction's tent, locate your race's tournament rep and begin your ascent as a Valiant.  The rest of your dailies will be given by this representative or the buddies surrounding him/her.
6.  The Valiant's Charge - Time to collect some newfangled Valiant's Seals. At a maximum of 5 seals per day, you'll need a full business week to finish off this rank.  Don't worry, there aren't many new quests to participate in, so it should mostly be on cruise control.  The three random dailies from the Up To The Challenge section return with no changes.  Training in the field is repeated, but bumped up to ten kills instead of just eight.

  • The Grand Melee - I hope your original jousting match was incredibly easy, because if it wasn't than this may be difficult for you.  You're tasked with taking down three Valiants in this feat of strength.  Be aware that you Shield (hotkey 4) can stack up to three times.  Before you go into combat get it stacked and allow the cooldown to pass, then start the battle.  Shield Break your opponent until they come into melee range and then melee.  While in melee keep your shield active, as the attack and buff are on separate CDs.  If you can keep a shield up while you opponent's is down during the melee skirmish, then it'll be an easy victory.

  • At the Enemy's Gates - Here's another easy traveling quest.  Head down to Corp'rethar in southern Icecrown - clearly marked on the map - and smash some Scourge skulls.  The combat is exceptionally easy, just make sure you are attacking the Lieutenants and not the Commanders.  The Commanders are far more difficult and not part of the quest criteria.

7.  The Valiant's Challenge - The same as step four, but a bit more difficult.  Chalk it up as another Grand Melee battle.

8.  A Champion Rises - At this juncture you as essentially done with the quest line.  From here on out it is just about grinding additional reputation, seals and coin to use for those delicious rewards.  Oh, and of course those achievements and titles, how could I forget those.  In association with that, the Valiant's Charge quest will re-open for all of the other races.  If you so chose, you can re-run them for added Achievements.

9.  Eadric the Pure/The Scourgebane - I haven't gotten to this point yet, so I don't know exactly why you do one and not the other of these.  Perhaps it is a simple choice or it has something to do with your reputation for Ebon Hold vs Argent Crusade?  They don't appear to be faction related at all.  Either way, both NPCs are on the tournament grounds themselves.
10.  Let the farming for Champion's Seals begin!  You'll need these to purchase the various Argent Tournament rewards.  Three of the quests are once again updated versions of previous dailies.  Taking Battle to the Enemy has you killing 15 Scourge, Battle Before the Citadel tasks you with actually killing a handful of Commanders at Corp'rethar, as well as other updates, and Among the Champions forces you to joust competitors of your ilk once more.

  • Threat From Above - As the only all-new quests for Champions, Blizzard has designed this one to be a bit more difficult.  According to the quest description itself, you should take along a few buddies to down Chillmaw.

That's it folks.  That is everything in one nice convenient package, complete with NPC locations for the more annoying quests.  It shouldn't take that long to bang out your Champion status, in fact, I will be there in three days if all goes well.  Has anyone already accomplished their Champion status today?  If you did, please let us know how difficult Chillmaw is.  Also, what about the split between the Argent Crusade and Ebon Blade in step nine?  Any insight there?

Happy jousting!

I haven't even bothered to do it, is there a certain time limit that we have to do them all until the full stadium is built or whatever?

Like is there a start and an end date to this since it's classed as a world event?

I love the idea of Argent

No, it is a permanent event that will always be in Northeast Icecrown, and you totally should go check it out, because not only is it fun, but it is an easy way to do dailies for gold!

April 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHonorshammer

no the hub is permanet the only thing that should change in a future patch is the two goblins dailies you should always be able to champion

April 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPowar

I will admit that the jousting is not easy, but me and my guild friends have had a great time going crazy with the medieval stuff. lots of slapping with gloves and calling each other varlets and a lot of random screamings of Nee

I'm loving the Argent Tourney. I haven't made Champion yet but it's good to know exactly how long it will take (4 more days for me). Although there isn't much that tickles my fancy in the way of purchasable rewards, other than the mount and tabard of course, I find it is just plain something fun to do that makes you feel like you really are in Northern Icecrown training for the final smack down with Arthas. I spent all last night traveling Azeroth gathering recipes and fishing to level some skills and I didn't wear any armor. Just my brand new bright blue Stormwind shirt! It was a blast!

April 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCozmus

I've made Champion of Stormwind early this morning. Chillmaw is preety easy, myself as a melee DPS (Long-time Arms Warrior since 2.3) found it a bit hard and troublesome to come into his hitbox, as instead of landing he just sort of, floats there. As his health drops the 3 cultist guys needed will appear, easy to take out, just watch for their ticking time bombs on the ground. Currently working on getting Champion again with Ironforge, although I guess a human male warrior running around with the "of Ironforge" title will look a little strange..*shurg*

I became a Champion of Sen'jin (complete with the achievement if you're exalted) as soon as the dailies were reset. I picked up "Threat From Above" and hoped to do it, but the general chat was like talking to a wall. -_-

I did see a pally and mage take on Chillmaw, though. They weren't having an easy time of it, but they managed to down the dragon.

No Unholypally you get several dailies that let you get 5 champion seals a day, the are picked up from the main tent. Not the horde and alliance tents

Looks like I finish tomorrow. So far it's cool and opens up my rep for other capital cities. And its a quick few gold for repairs in instances.

Became a Champion today. One thing I made notice of is that when you want to Champion the other cities, which I would advise because you get access to their mounts, tabards, and pets, you basically only have the "Sword" quest that they give. You have to go from Valiant ranking to Champion rank with them, so you have to do it for 13-12 days to get 25 marks, then you are allowed to be their champion. Once you get exalted ,you get their "of" title from the achievements.

Also, as far as I know, you don't become the champion of one city and that's it. Becoming a champion of every city seems to be possible, allowing you access to all the Quartermasters, it just takes awhile. Also, when you do become a champion, your gruntling/squire is allowed to carry the flag of that city, which is pretty neat.

Another note I've made. Simple strategy for all fights. Charge, turn quickly and try to get a Shield Breaker, stay close and melee. Eventually, THEY will walk away to used ranged attacks. When they do, charge again and rinse and repeat. Very easy, sometimes I can even go 4-5 battles without healing.

Happy Jousting!

April 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichael

@Wonocva

That's what I tried to do early on, but found it wasn't working out for me. Sure, I stacked my Defend before starting the joust. I made liberal use of the Shieldbreaker and Charge... when they actually worked. Why do I say that? Because for me, while you have the shared CD of 2 seconds between the two, the NPC acts as if that doesn't exist. Also, when I'd try to Charge, it seemed that it wouldn't immediately do so, resulting in me losing 2 stacks of Defend because of the apparent interface lag.

But it is good advice, and more power to you if it goes your way. For others like me, I've got some advice of my own:

1) Stack Defend to 3, obviously.
2) Don't let the NPC walk away from you when you start the fight.
3) Keep using Joust until your opponent tries to create some distance. Take that opportunity to use Shieldbreaker while closing the gap ASAP.
4) At this point, you'll either be low on time or have lost a stack, so refresh your Defend.
5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you're the victor.

Takes longer, but at least you won't lose.

April 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlayea

@Alayea

Hm, that's strange. This strategy has yet to fail me (mine I mean).

Well, in detail, basically, I start the fight, charge as soon as they enter minimum range, then 360 turn sharply and TRY to get a Shield Breaker. If I can't, it's cool. Then I just use attack over and over again. Eventually, I've found every NPC, no matter faction or ranking, will walk away, slowly, to get some distance. I stand still and when they hit minimum range again, I charge, sharp 360, try shield break and attack again. Sometimes I back up during the attacks to get another shield breaker if I'm bored.

I do notice that NPC's don't act as if they have a cooldown, but after the charge and the sharp turn, my Shield Breaker is always on cooldown.

On the lag, that's either a computer problem or you wait until they stopped walking away. Don't do that if it's the second case, as soon as they hit minimum range (back up if you want too), charge immediately. They don't have time to shield break generally and if you do the turn right away, you're too close for them to do anything.

However, your advice is also worth noting. A friend of mine said some NPC's have strategies. Some try to get away from you while others try to stay as close as possible. Generally, not true. If you stay close to them, they always seem to go away to get distance at some point and stay close if you're close. So if you stay close, like your strategy suggets, it's pretty much impossible to lose unless you don't constantly spam the attack button.

Jesus, this is the best guide I have found to date. I also think it is the longest post I have read on PL. Keep it up!

April 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSlinkz

My apologies, it appears that all Valiant quests are available to you when trying to champion another faction that's not your own. My guess is that they were the same dailies I had done that very day, so I couldn't do them again (probably a different weapon daily, that's why. I can't remember).

So every day, you can still get 5, taking a grand total of 5-6 (depending on the days where you have already done the quests but start championing another faction) days to become the champion of any and all factions.

I'm not entirely sure what the reason for getting Ebon Blade or Argent Crusade is either (for Champion quests). My guess is it's the lower faction at the time (rep wise) because doing the quests give Sunreaver rep and that factions rep. It's true for me because Crusade was slightly higher than Blade at the time. I however cannot confirm that this is completely true.

April 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWonocva

A quick time-saver for anyone still grinding with Ebon Blade, the vrykul you kill for the Leave Our Mark daily count as scourge for the Tournament daily, so if it's too crowded at Sindragosa’s Fall, pick up the three dailies at Shadow Vault for an easy 50G while you do Training In The Field.
