What’s The Joy In A Gank?

Ganked! So I, like everyone else it seems, have been victim of Blizzard’s recruit-a-friend program. With TBC wrapping up, it seems like the perfect time to level some alts with a big bonus. So like many others I have made friends with myself and started dual-boxing. But I don’t want to talk about that today. What I want to talk about is my experience leveling again.

Like my good friend Juggynaut, I too (against my better judgment) recently decided to bring my new toons into Stranglethorn Vale. Being that I rolled on a PvP server I knew the risks… but I also knew there were plenty of kill quests that were ripe for dual-boxing, so I went anyway. As I expected I got ganked, and ganked a lot. So much in fact that after about half a day of leveling there I ended up throwing my headset across the room, yelling some choice profanities, and swearing I would never go back.

I’ll reiterate, I fully expected the PvP central that STV is famous for. The reason for my frustration was not one, but several 70s that thought it was great fun to come kill my poor level 35 characters over and over and over again. Not only that, but after they killed me they had no issues camping my body and waiting for me to res to kill me again.

Now as I’m sitting there with my ghost hovering over my corpse waiting for them to let their guard down for just a moment, it occurred to me… how are these people having fun right now? I really don’t understand it. I enjoy PvP as much as the next guy, and understand what comes with rolling on a PvP server. But seriously, who enjoys camping characters 30 levels below them for hours on end? It just seems sick to me. Are they really that hard up to feel "leet"?

There is no challenge for them, there is nothing to be gained, pretty much the only reason to do it is to be a huge jerk. Seems crazy to me, but its clear LOTS of people do it. So I ask, why? Do you participate in the STV scene, or at least have insights as to why this is fun for people? When I’m on my 70s, my priorities are elsewhere, just saying.

I am sad to admit that I have ganked those characters 30 levels lower than me in STV and other places. It was only a few times and not for too long (maybe an hour). The biggest reason I did it though was payback, which I think is the main reason people gank lower levels. I had a hard day of battlegrounds trying to get pvp gear, you know, one of those days where it seems the other side *cough*horde*cough* seem to turtle AV every time. Eventually I got so pissed that I flew down to STV and killed every horde I saw. After a few minutes their mains or friends started showing up so I had some fun with them until I was ganked myself. One group even made alliance characters on trial accounts and started sending me hate messages. So, in the end I was more angry to begin with.

tl;dr - don't gank, it hurts everyone.

Yeah, thats pretty much Southshore and STV once you move on from that it helps. Those areas are just know for extreme pvp (ganking) and it attracts people going for the trinket drop (Achievement) Not to mention the Booty Bay - Rachet Boat. I can't imagine not playing on a PvP server, thats part of the game. On my server, everyone knows if your a 70 in either SS or STV, your asking for trouble.

I totally agree with you, i am on a PVP (frostmane) server and ever since i hit level 30+ i have been a subject to countless ganking and i am not very happy. I have also thought of changing to another realm but i cant be bothered leveling a character again. The only logical explanation i have for people ganking is that they need to feel that they have got the power but isnt it better when you kill a player your own level? That were the power lies not killing my little shaman who is trying to push thought his wow life.

Shamans for the win!!!!!

This actually happened to me last night on Executus. I was wondering around working on a quest and a high-level horde hunter came up and started attacking me. I very quickly realized since I could not tell what level he/she was that there was no sense in trying to fight them I simply stood there. Thats when the horde started toying with me. They got me pretty low on health before I threw up a bubble shield and healed myself, all the while not attacking them and I tried walking away, hoping they would leave me be on my way. Never the less they finally got sick of toying with me and ganked me. I really don't get the point of attacking someone who is not even attacking you back and is making a effort to avoid you. I am convinced most Horde members on Executus server are teenagers who think they are being cool by ganking someone lower then them.

ya people who do that are douchebags. im on a PvE server (arathor) and if i WERE on a PvP server the only people i would gank would be my friends in real life and that would be only 1 or 2 kills... =P

QQ wah wah...You all have a bunch of sand in your pussies. There are separate factions for a reason. Part of the fun in this game on a PvP server is to prevent the other side from accomplishing certain tasks or making their life as difficult as hell. Ganking lower level characters definitely accomplishes this as can be seen by all the whining in this here thread. It makes people not want to play, it pisses them off and generally means you are doing your faction proud by fucking over the other.

In general those level 70s are in those contested zones to protect friends, guildies or their own alts in case they start to get ganked. They are just killing lowbies and camping them while they are already there. I'm sure there are people that ONLY go to these zones for the sole purpose of picking on lowbies but I'm sure that is more rare. Go to Desolace, go level in instances (no risk of getting ganked), etc. It isn't like there aren't other options available to you.

A PvP server definitely is more difficult and has many more obstacles than a carebear server but it also has greater rewards. I love defending myself from someone trying to gank me. I love ganking other level 70s (hell I wish we could kill players of our own faction). It is a lot easier to level up on a carebear realm which is why in the past you couldn't transfer from carebear to PvP.

Now I'm not saying I enjoy getting ganked on my alts where I don't have the slightest chance to do anything but that's when you switch to your main and kill them, ask some friends or guildies to help out or start a full fledged world war 3 in the zone and end up with 50 level 70s of each faction going at it (fun as hell). The point is, PvP is well PvP and you have to learn to deal with it. Trying to understand the why is mostly pointless (why does a serial killer do what he does). Good times!

Sometimes when I'm on my rogue I like to sneak up on low levels and come out of stealth behind them. I don't kill them, I just let them know that I could of. It is quite fun and you are still being nice.

i don't understand it ethir i means theres loads more things to do on wow than to camp STV and kill ppl trying to lvl up in one hit then wait till they spawn and do it again its so pointless and boring
i guess your right there just jerks :)

First off, I originally started playing WoW on a PvP server called Frostwolf because it was the realm my brothers' toons were located in. I was entirely new to the game, so I didn't know what I had gotten myself into (you're free to laugh if you desire to). I was fine leveling until -- ba dum bum -- Stranglethorn Vale. Not fun in the slightest bit. It wasn't until my siblings and I transferred to the RP server Thorium Brotherhood that I could actually make any progress on my character.

I'm never playing on a PvP server because, in my opinion, there are too many people who opt for [url=http://www.webster.com/dictionary/gamesmanship] over [url=http://www.webster.com/dictionary/sportsmanship]sportsmanship.

Dude, I was trying to level out of that same expedition camp on Sunday night. I was on Daggerspine and had the exact same issue with damn hordies with nothing better to do than kill a level 36 holy priest. Seriously, WTF?

I had some guild-mates on their 70's in the vicinity, but we couldn't bait the guy out. The minute they leave, he comes back.

I'm sure he's happy to know he can kill someone 35 levels lower than he is. Yay.

We gave up and went questing elsewhere. That expedition should hire some level 82 NPC Security.

I really don't see the point in it. I used to get ganked in STV all the time. Once I hit 60 I think it was, I went there with the purpose of ganking some lowbie Alliance and I found that ganking about 4 or 5 of them I got bored and didn't really see the point in it so I quit and haven't done it since.

And corpse camping is just dumb regardless if its ganking a lowbie or an honorable kill.

I fucking hate when 70's go around ganking lowbies. There is absolutely nothing to be gained. They should be losing experience. Whenever I see a high-level Horde (I play Alliance) come rolling along, I either high-tail it outta there, or /wave or /hug my way out of being ganked. This works surprisingly well. Apparently the Horde wants your respect, otherwise they'll kill you to un-earn it. Brilliant!

As we all know, being ganked is one of the most annoying and frustrating things in World of Warcraft. We get too mad over this happening in our game, when we are defenseless to the attacker. I reckon most cases of ganking is in fact a sort of revenge for when you yourself got ganked in your lower levels. Now you feel since you had to put up with it, others have to aswell. This is a very childish behaviour, thus, most gankers ought to be children, or at least all too young to play this game anyway.

Overall, I blame a lot of this on BC.

It really destroyed the community. That loss of community combined with the separation of Outlands from Azeroth made it impossible to reliably call in for help from level 70s in these situations.

I enjoy the risk aspects of PvP servers (my home server is Tichondrius) to a degree. Like most of you I have done my fair share of “drive by ganking” of lowbies.

And I have appreciated those who were known to camp an area, as they added something to the danger (as long as it was level appropriate). Be it the 60 rogue who camped BRM for hours every day before BC or the 70 Hunter in Nagrand.

But this crap is just a series of lame griefers. You aren’t PvPing, as the challenge is about the same as killing boars in Elwynn. Extra lameness points if you use exploits such as the rooftop in South Shore.

You get off not on anything you the game is providing either through skill, graphics or lore. No, you are just enjoying the fact that you are frustrating some other person. You are doing the equivelant of going to their house and turning off their computer and saying “Ha ha, you can’t play cause I said so”.

You add nothing to the experience of the game. And you are worthless.

Now the rogue who used the MC helmet on me one time so he could emote his name and specifically how he was going to gank me and then told me to have a nice day . . . he added something.

I have just leveled a mage through STV on a PvP server and it really was not that bad - I got ganked maybe 4 or 5 times from 35-40 (I am playing alliance). I find staying away from the popular areas helps a lot, the level 70s tend to camp the shared questhub so using common sense I spent as little time there as possible. Also I kept off of the roads, I learnt that after running from the rebel camp to BB following the road the entire time and being ganked once or twice.

If you do get ganked just don't respond, thats what the gankers are looking for - a response. I don't even wait to res and I will buff up and continue on my lowbie way as I please.

Gankers are easily avoided, just stay away.

I Love Ganking Lowbies For reason...

It makes my Weiner look bigger xD

November 4, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterScaper

i never liked ganking. but that doesn't mean im a saint.

when im on my 70 rogue(a gnome named, naturally, lishuss) and happen to be at StV and i see a little flagged hordie i walk around, double back, get right behind them and go invisible. I never attack them, but i LOVE watching them freak out and, more often then not, fall into the water from running away without look at the direction they're facing.

i love it so much but i know its a dick move

Ocome on people the reason people like me or anyone else on a pvp server does it for is the excitment of killing. when you kill a low lvl what do they do they run making a nice cat and mouse game. but the fun doesnt end there. they call for help OOOO THE FUN!!! they have there lvl 70 friends come help and that means more fun plus random honor. We gank because we are broad and with WotLK coming out people should lvl fast because all ganking will be on hold for about 2 weeks. but that is why I and everyone else on PVP servers gank.

i to have been ganked numerous times on the pvp server 1 of my toons are on but frighteningly enough ive actully saw lvl 70s fighting to the dath just to camp me and my friends trying to quest

There is not cycle of hatred, or what the hell its called. You don't gank because somebody ganked you. Utter rubbish.

You gank because you want to make somebody feel bad, and you get a kick out of it. The more they twist in the wind, the more joy the ganker gets.

I hate gankers, but then I'm on a pve server so don't have to deal with it..... unless Blizzard puts in an event that gives all the gankers that ability. *zombie invasion*

I only ever gank if its a person arount my level otherwise there isnt any fun in it.

November 4, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterEliezer

Ganking is fun but camping is only done by complete nerds who live in the basement of their mothers house and have never come out of that basement lol
