How Do You Want Arthas To Die?

Death By Tar & Feathering? Death By Tar & Feathering?

Patch 3.3 is so close that I can almost connect to the PTR long enough to play it.  We've been waiting for this content patch ever since it we revealed that Arthas would be joining the game dedicated to him a little late - by C'Thun the star could never arrive on time.  Now that we have the PTR housing patch 3.3, the first round of ever-changing patch notes, maps of the dungeons and lots more, one burning question remains.  How will Arthas die?

Let's start with the more appropriate question.  Will Arthas die?

It has almost become cliche that World of Warcraft's bosses manage to slip through death's grasp at the last second.  A large number of the best known bosses have merely been de-summoned, released from someone's control or regained their sanity (put down at his request).  In the case of the Old Gods, we mortals have been fighting parts of them, leading some to believe that we've only faced a portion of their vast power.  Is it possible that Blizzard could allow one of Warcraft's most infamous villains to avoid the grave?!

Hell no.  The disservice done to fans by allowing Arthas/The Lich King to live would be unfathomable.  He's going down.

Of course, then we return to the original discussion, how do you want Arthas to die?  Blizzard could go one of a hundred ways for Arthas' demise, so I can only tell you how I'd like to see him die.  That would be by Jaina's hand.  If there's anyone who needs redemption for all Arthas has done (that's still alive) it is Jaina, his former lover.

Rather than another Maiev + raiders vs. Illidan team-up, I'd like to see Arthas go all Hulk on us, freezing our toons when we get him to zero HP.  As he's toying with us, attempting to crack our minds, Jaina pops out of no where to confront him.  Being the former suave Prince The Lich King tries to sweet talk his former mate, only to be struck down mid sentence by an icy bolt, and then finished off with a melee move from her staff.  Double tap, it's important.  Her icy demeanor would vanish as he falls to the ground, and then she'd weep over his fallen corpse (as we looted it) as she curses the gods for putting her in such a position.

The odds of my vision coming to fruition are slim to none, but it doesn't hurt to dream.  It wasn't until I finished reading Christie Golden's book that I came to believe Jaine is the only person to send the Prince of Lordaeron six feet under.  How do you want the former paladin to go down?  What about you hordies?  You likely have a different view on this whole Scourge debacle since one of the leaders of your nation-states didn't date the backstabbing necromantic.  Although I hear Thrall has the hots for Jaina.  Just a rumor someone's spreading.  And there is that Slyvanas lady.  Perhaps she'll get her revenge in the horde script?

As Arthas dies he should fall to his knees and screem out "The ice stone has melted" then fall down and die

Slyvanas would be the best choise for killing Arthas. And anyways...in the "In-Game Cinematic: The Wrath Gate" there were undead sent by Slyvanas, if im not wrong. So her killing Arthas and getting her revenge would be logical.

if ppl had bothered to read rise of the lich king, they wouldve know that arthas already killed off his humanity and nerzhuls spirit, there will be NO redemption for arthas, the mofo is going down

and you know its going to be tirion and darion mograine that will strike the final blow

I would go for all his enemys: jaina, sylvannas, mograine, Darion etc stand agenst him togethere before they win and sylvannas force both of there spirits out and to be captured without powers as to be tormented by Sylvannas.

I believe that along the 40 man raid, there should be an Army made by King Wyrnn, Jaina, Thrall, Garosh, Argent Crusade big Bo$$, and the Ghost of Uther. It would be nice for Arthas to die tragically and a new player to be the next Lich King. Anyway, Arthas has to lose Frostmourne one way or another :)

P.S If i missed any faction bosses it's because i think they are not important :)

I wantto do like they did with onyxia every time u kill her u should be able to loot his head so you can turn it into your race leader and it should hang in the throne room as a warning to all that dare bring the scourge upon us again

@ Staffan

It was the undead who made him go mad... he did it because he was corrupted by ambition or however you spell it naturally his ambition was to cleanse the undead and ultimately save his people. What is 100 people (from Warcraft3) compared to a kingdom falling. He lost humanity when the undead corrupted him telling him things and ultimately 3rd partying arthas into getting Frostmourne. We support Arthas not Ner'zhul+ according to the Naaru in a quest in Icecrown the light never forsakes its followers. Arthas was a devout palladin with a love life and a sworn enemy in Kael'thas the elven prince. It can't end in the Ashbringer finishing all. Or even Jaina or Sylvanas that wouldnt make for a good story.

The whole raid group enters the citadel, and instead of fighting, we all sit down to eat Italian. Waiters come by and put out the pasta, the capicol and pour some red wine. We're looking around the place and we can see Arthas sitting at another table. He looks at us, sips the wine, some of his death knights are outside parking their dreadsteeds. Then some song by Journey comes on and the whole screen goes black.

From what I would like to see

As the LK gets his hp kicked down to the bottom the Knights of former silver hand storms in and helps us kick his butt

but... thats just me

its not the undead that drove arthas to do the things he did, but Arthas injured his horse Invincible during a ride in the snow and he had to put down his horse, this made him go emo

October 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteramidaman

I don't think arthas will die. Although i think The Lich King will die somehow by maby being stabbed by Frostmourne.

I really would like to note one thing about people saying that Arthas is going to get redeemed. Personally I think that Arthas is too far in the darkness to be redeemed and I think that Ner'zhul's spirit should be redeemed because before Ner'zhul was put into that blasted armor he saw the bad ways of orcs when Kil'jaeden made them betray the elements and so Ner'zhul was forced into this meaning that his spirit is still good ,but since Arthas while being completely evil took over of Ner'zhul and he couldn't do jack shit about anything.
As for Arthas death I'd say that he should fall from the Ashbringer bucause it was created to counter Frostmourne which will probably result in the shattering of Frostmourne and as for it's special purpose I think some villian in Cataclysm is going to find some of the shards of Frostmourne and do something with it

i dont like the hole ide that arthas most die.

Im a Illidan fan and i belied Illidan in my eyes were a big guy , that gave mut's to the story , and i among many became sad we i die , he wose a really cool char, so why Blizzard did u have to kill Illidan of , why ?

so go ahead and be like "hey we love arthas more we let him live " stile , i dont like it at all , but hey im not the one how creates the game, im just think is bad to kill of all cool char weird good backstory that all

October 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMalduk

I think it would be cool to see Arthas brought down at the end by the spirits of those closest to him. As the Lich King hits zero hp he falls to one knee. At which point the spirits of Terenes, Uther, Mauradin, and heck let's even through in Antonidas appear and lay a mental and spiritual assault on the Lich King that is the finishing blow. I think the idea of Sylvanas or Jaina are good ideas too, but I think Jaina wouldn't be able to finish off Arthas in the hopes of his redemption. Sylvanas could, but I feel will get cheated of her final revenge against her one time master and tormentor.

Blizzard you better not screw this up. This is one of those WoW moments that needs to be huge and unforgettable regardless of how it plays out.

If you noice in the first official World of Warcraft.com thing on 3.3 it makes sure to tell you why Jaina is there: To find Arthas' humanity. Parts of it are still there. Admitedly they screwed up way to many things with Illidan including the release date on his raid( a little to early for some people). Arthas should not be anything close to a fail. He has so much effort that they have almost all his childhood in lore.

October 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThrall'sLeave

but if have read the war of the ancient , Illidan if in there and they talk allot about him and Malfurion , he has alot of lore on him , and Blizzard just deicide that , yeah let 40ish random heros go in and kill him, this is the guy how closet portals on outland slayed Tichondrius , any almost melted the Icecrown.

October 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMalduk

I've been thinking, and I think that because the world (of warcraft) is so unfair, he'll regain his lost sanity at 1% while the raid is frozen/whatever - something happens and he wtfpwns Ner'Zhul somehow. I dunno, he's Arthas, he'll think of *something!* Almost all the faction leaders show up arriving with jetpacks or whatever, Sylvanas ain't there yet as she's a nature gal and prefers to walk, taking longer time than everyone else. The now sane Arthas makes a speech about how terribly sorry he is, and how he'll pay for his sins. Then Sylvanas pops outta nowhere and fires twenty-seven arrows into his left eye.

Okay, maybe not just like that, but so that you'll get the feeling that he shouldnt've died. Of course, Jaina will go massive emo and stop holding Varian back - Maybe that's the cause of the all out war we've been hearing so much about?

October 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSkeels

Sylvanas. Hands down. I can't imagine a scenario in which he dies, other than by her hand, that I'm satisfired with.

Please Blizz, let it be her.

October 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterlawman30

Um, someone said something about Sylvanas sending in Forsaken at Wrathgate? It was Grand Apothecary Putriss. Not Sylvanas. Not sure if Varimanthas had anything to do with it

@Thrall'sLeave: The Scourge may have pushed Arthas around a bit, but he still made all those choices of his own free will - most notably, the choice to take up Frostmourne, no matter the consequences. That's like saying someone on drugs isn't liable for their own actions because their judgment was impaired - they were the ones who chose to take the drugs, knowing that it would impair them. Similarly, Arthas willingly took up Frostmourne, willing to pay any price for doing so.

@Elsey: Dalaran didn't move to Northrend in order to fight the Scourge. Their purpose there is to stop Malygos and the Blue Dragonflight from messing up all the leylines of Azeroth. I can't recall any Kirin Tor-based quest that's Scourge-oriented, but plenty that are dragon-oriented.

Regarding the Cataclysm trailer from Blizzcon 2009: It only does the "war continues against the Lich King" bit because while Blizzard wanted to give some juicy details about the next expansion, they didn't want people to forget that we've still got Icecrown Citadel to deal with.
