New 5-man Dungeon Incoming...What To Do Till Then?

Emerald Dream 5-man & Raid Would Be AWESOMEIn late March it was revealed that Blizzard is hard at work on a new Battleground for an upcoming patch.  Just shy of a month later and not one, not two, but three separate blues announced plans for a new 5-man dungeon.  Being Blizzard employees, there wasn't much to the announcements.  All that we know for sure is that the dungeon will be part of an upcoming patch - you'd be insane to think the BG and instance will come in the same patch - and that it "can be compared to what we saw with Magister's Terrace."  Naturally, we have no idea if the comparison that can be made refers to the scope, size, difficulty or a combination of the three.

New content is fantastic, and I can't wait to see what direction they take the instance.  Will it be released alongside a raid?  Will it have anything to do with the growing Arthas storyline?  Is it going to contain machinima like MgT?  An endless amount of questions, with a catch.  Sadly, the announcement of the new 5-man content has shined a light on the current crop of 5-man instances and their heroic alter egos.  Frankly, they are beginning to feel incredibly stale.

It is this very reason that I bring up a topic as old as heroics themselves, heroic Old World instances.  Blizzard, if you can't get new content out fast enough, I am sure that many of your subscribers wouldn't mind revisiting some retuned old content.  Just think of the advantages of doing so.

  • A large percentage of the players joined World of Warcraft after the launch of The Burning Crusade.  Therefore, a good amount of the old world instances - especially the mid-range instances - were ignored by the playerbase.

  • Retuning is far less time consuming/costly than creating a new instance.

  • Trickling out retuned old world instances would keep players busy between major content updates.

  • Many old world 5-mans are far longer - and larger - than the current crop of dungeons.  The varied length would likely cater to the hardcore audience who tend to be fond of more diverse and deeper offerings.  There's no reason to expect that the casual players wouldn't enjoy it either.

  • You've already recycled content in the past (Naxxramas , Caverns of Time) and that was accepted.  No need to worry about that stigma.

  • The old world would see a (small) population increase, rather than its current state of being largely abandoned.  Essentially, more than just Northrend would be relevant.

  • Come the next expansion, you could sprinkle retuned TBC instances amoung the content patches.

  • Being "old school" is still hip...or so I tell myself.

  • You'd shut me up.

Just think of the possibilities.  LFM Heroic UBRS - Rend Run.  The return of Dire Maul ledge walking.  More Barman Shanker grinding.  Discovering the secret boss in Blackfathom Deeps.   Getting lost outside of Maraudon, only to be farted on when you finally get inside.  Van Cleef.  I'm giddy over the prospects already.

Many of us have run Wrath's heroics dozens, perhaps even a hundreds times.  The question is, would you have the any interest in the four year old content or are you content waiting long periods of time for all-new encounters?

I'd personally love to do a heroric Scarlet Monastary!!

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKerrangous

YES.

Thank you. This is exactly what I feel would be awesome.

Being the hard-core completionist I am, I HAVE run all the old world stuff, shy of Temple (yet), but I would love to run them when they're actually challenging, not soloing them all at level 80 (besides the raids, except ZG <_<).

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO IT BLIZZARD!

I would love to see old world heroics as well. The new 5 man should have something to do with arthas IMO.
also first?

I think it would be a great idea, my favorite 5 man content in the game is still zul'farrak. This would also explain things like why the gnome home land was taken over by a bunch of level 30's. How ever what would happen when the next expansion came out? Would they just raise the level cap and change all the loot in them? I think it is a great idea but it would be difficult to implement, but once again awesome to see.

I've missed the aspect of instances where you could actually get lost trying to navigate to the entrance and once you get inside figuring out where to go. Now instances seem extremely linear with no challenge to getting into them.

The only problem I see with blizz doing this is that if all the 80s return to the Old World then it might make leveling for new players and current player's alts more difficult especially on PvP servers.

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBarishi

This is such an obvious (and seemingly great) idea that you have to assume Blizz has most certainly thought of it and either a) has it planned, but hasn't said anything about it yet, or b) decided against it, and of course we'll never know why.

This idea rules me and my friends joke about HC Deadmines all the time, it would be a nice improvement to the game.

if blizz were to make old world dungeons hae a hc mode then they would also have to implement alot of new gear, which could become problematic or confusing.

Heroic Kara enough said

YES!

I was wandering through the old world last night and finally realized how completely abandoned everything is. Occasionally I'd come across another lower level player (who was obviously on an alt due to the BoA armor), but it was lonely -- and frankly no fun -- without the hustle and bustle of the old days (pre-BC).

Heroic classic instances would get some people back into the world at large. Sure, they may be level 80 and might have a tendency to gank anyone at a much lower level of the opposite faction, but it would get people out there in the world again.

I mean, they can't just keep adding on new areas and abandoning everything that came before it, can they?

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPatrickD

I agree that that would be an awesome idea however I just see 1 problem. If you add "heroic" difficulties to all the old school dungeons, it's gonna create a lot of problems for lower lvl players. How many times have you wanted to do AN or Nexus, only to be ganked by the groups of 80's sitting there waiting to do heroic AN? Now imagine a lvl 34 going to do RFK. At least in Northrend, the players in the area are all higher lvl to begin with. How many 80's can you find to come help you in the Barrens....

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLafetus

I always wanted Stratholme lvl 80 mode.

Why?

Best 5 man instance ever.

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterandy

Heroic RFC!!!!..But what i really want? A raid group of lvl 10s doing RFC (Granted you can't do any of the quests) And yes.. max capacity for RFC is 10 players

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShnoo

Great idea! I love the old world 5-mans, they just have a more adventurous feel to them.
My only problem is that most pre-wrath 5-man bosses were tank n spanks, but that wouldn't take long to change if they were released a few at a time. As for lvl 80 drops, they could use a generic loot table shared by all bosses like [Old World Healing Mace] and [Old World Ret Pally 2-hander] with some epics for the final bosses, and of course emblems. As for ganking, you signed up for it.

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRaethos

I would love this as I came in well into BC expansion and hit 70 a week before Wrath came out.

I have only done a handful of the Old World dungeons, and the lower level stuff at that.

Like what Wonocva said, I have been tempted to go back and solo a lot of it just out of being a completionist.

Heroic Shadowfang Keep! DO IT!

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKrowtz

Fantastic idea, they really should do this. Heroic Molten Core/Temple would be epic.

And as for the lower level problem, they could always make it so that the 80's cannot attack the regular leveled players trying to get into that instance. Set up some kindof neutrality zone once you get inside a certain set area where the instances are.

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

The only place that ganking is an issue is pvp servers. If you don't want to get ganked go to a pve server and quit QQing about it. I would personally love to see all old world dungeons have a heroic mode. It's not like they were actually more difficult back then but the classes had less tools to do what they do. The thing is that all the tanks have enough aoe threat generation now that the aoe pulls were born in wrath. The mechanics really wouldn't change just the length of each dungeon would be different. I would personally love to see a heroic dead mines.

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterckiemnstr345

I would have a 'solution as for the ganking problem, it would cost a bit of effort however. I'd say, make the near surroundings of any and every dungeon-raid instance 'Sanctuary' (like Shatt). This would reduce time lost on rezzing and trying to keep up the morale of your group to still do the instance.

CoT was not recycled

entirely new wing with entirely new content

"Fantastic idea, they really should do this. Heroic Molten Core"

As someone who raided molten core to the death, even 3 years on I still think that this is a horrible idea. Unending lava and bosses which all look very similar to the surrounding trash mobs, please no.

Raid content needs to be new...

5 man content is different, but as much as the new instances are short, the irritation of trying to find a group which had 3 hours spare to fully clear brd or do both sides of mara was unbelievably annoying.
Especially with non linear paths there is usually an easier route (or perceived to be) and if you happen to need something from the other half... usually doesn't work out.

That said, with the revamp to talents and abilities the dungeons are incredibly easy for the required level especially below level 50.

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShoggy

YES I super Support this idea. I would love to see Heroic Stock, or Heroic Wayvern cavern.

April 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterninomachi

I agree.
I really like all the old world content. When I started playing this game I made a point to hit all the dungeons. I missed the a couple but I really think it added something to the game. Most players dont even bother with it. Takes less time to level with quest. I had a good group of friends that would group every Friday night or so and do a dungeon.
The problem is most of the dungeons where so stinking long. Plus yes it was funny when you got lost going back to your body but it does get to be a pain. The thing is those dungeons had there time and place. They are still there if you want to revist.
Now if they re-did the dungeons and make then 70-80 heroics that would be get give them general loot tables nothing really big or fancy. But what happens when the next expansion comes out and the level cap changes.? What then? Do all the dungeons go throw another levle change? Do they stay? It will be a never ending battle. I think this is why Blizz has not done it.
