Patch 3.2: Changes To UI To Make Questing Easier

QuestHelped/Carbonite & Extended QuestLog/DoubleWide Features Incoming QuestHelper/Carbonite & Extended QuestLog/DoubleWide Features Incoming

I've never been one to play on the PTR.  Like many other players I don't want to spoil the upcoming content or experience "unfinished" gameplay.  And yet I spend hours a week just staying current with the latest news and revelations, from the Live realms and the PTR.  I guess that would make me a bit of a hypocrite - I won't spoil by playing, but get spoiled by reading occasionally - but that is the price I pay for knowledge.  So when my buddy noticed that the patch notes had changed again, he knew I would be interested.

Blizzard began implementing QuestHelper functionality as part of the Secrets of Ulduar patch, and I was okay with it.  They have been trying to make leveling easier for some time now, and that change was the next logical step.  The devs seemed to have found a happy middle ground between the hardcore and the casual players thanks to additions to the tooltips.  In essence you still had to read the quest text to find out where mob X or item Y was located.  Only when you were in the general location - being able to mouseover an objective - would you be tipped off.  No biggie.  Enter Call of the Crusade, which is taking it a step further.

  • A skull graphic will be placed on the map in the general area where players can find creatures they must kill for a quest.

  • A skull graphic with red eyes will be placed on the map in the general area where creatures can be found that must be killed in order to collect quest objects.

  • A gear/cogwheel graphic will be placed on the map in the general area where players must loot quest objects found in the world.

  • A chat bubble graphic will be placed on the map in the general area where players must interact with a specific NPC for a quest.

  • A yellow question mark graphic will show on the map to provide the location of a NPC whose quest the player has completed.

Aside from these obvious benefits, former downloaders of quest helping mods should see an increase in available system resources and (slightly) more secure accounts.

Okay, this is way further then I expected Blizzard to go.  Before the hardcore base goes all "reading comprehension" on us let's take a step back.  Remove yourself from the discussion and just look at WoW as a product.  Blizzard, the creator of said product, is looking at QuestHelper, and mods like it, and realizes that it is one of the most downloaded add-ons for World of Warcraft.  What would you expect them to do?  Would you want them to simply ignore the actions of millions of players?  No, of course not.

Here's the rub, many other UI changes are getting the option to be toggled on or off, but Zarhym's updates make no mention of that for the topic at hand.  If you want to play WoW the hardcore old school way it doesn't seem to be an option.  The freedom of choice is what the hardcore should be complaining about, not the dumbing down of a part of WoW that you are no longer a part of.

Under what circumstances would you accept the added features to the world map?  Would it have been acceptable to you if it was implemented back in 2004?  Should the option be defaulted off?  Are you going to abandon your helpful questing mod if the feature goes live?  With the amount of subscribers reaching a plateau, does it even matter at this stage in the game?

Let the QQ begin. <popcorn>

i might see what its like with out questhelper and use blizzard's system but im not all the hopeful on how well it will work. i really dont know many people who would want to turn it off because everyone wants to level up as fast as they can but there is probably some out there that want it off and they should get that option

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTalcoya

I think there should be an option to turn it off. Just for those people out there who are still "vanilla". As in, they are experienced players, but have NO add-ons. (Go figure, eh?)

I personally will probably stick with QH but I'm willing to give Blizzard's thing a chance. (Equipment Manager vs Outfitter anyone?)

I'd like a toggle off feature, but I mean overall, it's such a minuscule thing (in my opinion) that it's hardly worth being upset over.

What you do have to keep in mind though, is that the PTR has only been up for a few days. A new build hasn't even gone up yet, so it may be just too early to be upset over no toggle switch for it. It may just be in the next or an upcoming build.

I'm happy to see the addition, but not being able to turn it off? Boo Blizzard... boo!

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVolgas

You can see blizzard trying to make the game more idiot proof and very easy so many new players will get hooked easier

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGerolden

Does seem like a toggle for the option makes sense.

That being said, there is of course a REASON that QuestHelperMonkey and the ilk are among the most wildly used add-ons - Blizz's notorious sense of humor got WAY away from them when they wrote many of the Quest instructions.

I appreciate a good puzzle myself from time to time, but come ON guys, sometimes it is literally impossible to find what you are looking for using only the Quest description.

Just yesterday one of my toons was asked to help some lowbie to "do a quest" and so I followed him as he headed off... but when he mentioned what quest it was we were going to do, I wasn't surprised at all that he only THOUGHT he knew where to go - I'd had the same experience many times back when 60 was king that he would have had without me, wandering around for hours looking for something "south of Ratchet."

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterZerbet

i guess now we will need addon to turn this thing off...

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDespo

Heck yah, they better put on an "off" option...I actually like figuring it out.

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTaskun

Every other thing they have added lately has the option to be turned off. Talent Preview, Gear Management, I don't see why this wouldn't ahve the same option. It would annoy me to have it running on my main for no reason same with QH. I only have QH turned on for my alts that are leveling. I don't need an add on to tell me how to do daily quests i've been doing for months. :P

I don't mind the features being implemented, I just wish they'd stop doing half ass jobs.

IE: The equipment manager was the latest addition and it's crap. When you change one piece of equipment, there isn't even an "update" button to quickly update your equipment config. It's sad that you have to install an addon to update their poorly implemented imitation of someone elses addon. If you are going to do something, do it right is all I'm saying.

The only add-on I run is Recount. Never used Quest Helper, and I think when I hit Northrend I ended up using WoWHead a number of times I can count on one hand for locating just exactly where something was that I couldn't find. That was for leveling up both my Horde DK and Alliance Paladin. My Alliance Paladin has also gotten all the quest achievements for the Northrend zones too.

I think for Northrend though, the short quest description provides most of what is needed now to figure out exactly what you need to do. That was no where near the same for the level 1-60 content.

One of the things that I think helps me is to do a quick run around the entire zone, get the discovery achievement and find all the quest there are to get. Then I had a full map and some idea where certain mobs were on the map.

For me, I do enjoy a bit of discovery, and I don't feel it takes me too long to quest along the way. One of my friends that I was playing with always commented on how fast I was leveling (and she uses Quest Helper.) Got my DK to 80 in about 2 weeks after the X-pack launch.

Either way, most serious players knows that questing is basically just a delay before the real goal, anyhow. Once you hit Max level, the game has only really just begun.

When your new though, leveling is what it's all about, but more importantly the story, environment and lore. With less hassle about wandering around trying to find a boss, the new players have more opportunity to enjoy the ride the first time through, especially if new players don't feel that Quest Helper is mandatory cause they can just look on their map if they are having trouble finding anything, and don't have the hassle of updating any add-ons on patch day.

I know an RL friend who would be far more interested in WoW with this feature built in. When he played before, his biggest complaint was that he had such a hard time finding quest objectives on his own. He came from CoH, which gave you a navigation pointer to mission instances (which was a significant majority of the questing in that game.)

Plus, a friend of mine is using Quest Helper and I've seen it lead him wrong far too often in the time we've played together.

One of the things that never made sense was that I'm obviously carrying around a map, since I can pull it up, why couldn't the quest giver just point on the map where the panthers were that he got attacked by!?! This new addition is basically the same thing as the quest giver pointing out where he lost his tools right on the map you happen to be conveniently carrying around.

I'm with Zerbet on this one. Since the beginning of this game, there have been poorly written quests. Thottbot came into existence so people could just look up what to do when it got too confusing; this is just a more simple way to get things done (as long as they implement it well, unlike the crap equipment manager).

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKagitaar

I've been leveling with QH for a long long time, and I've gotten to like it, except for 1 thing, it takes a freaking 20+mb from my RAM unlike the rest, so I'm looking forward to this new, hopefully smaller thingamagik.

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShamtastik

I personally don't mind so much that Blizzard is adding their own version of quest helper to the game so much as the fact that they're making this game less of a challenge.

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAda

The "hardocre" will bitch aobut it to feel elite but in the end I doubt very seriously they would turn it off either. Once you've done every quest in the game 10 times leveling up becomes a breeze anyway and you clean up zones fast enough opening your map would actaully slow you down. Until you hit that one class specific questline then your progress goes so nothing while you try and figure out exactly what the next piece of the puzzle is. I can guarantee it's at this point those "hardcore" will be popping up that map hunting for the skull or cog to see where they need to go to complete it. Possibly still hoping on an external website to see what all might be involved in completing it.

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPauldy

All you who are worried about an option to turn it off need not fret. I'm playing on the PTR and under the "Objectives" section of the interface options, right at the bottom of the list is an option that says "Show Quest Objectives on Map" with a little check box beside it.

So if you don't want to use it, you don't have to.

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterQuothea

@Quothea

That's good to hear.

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlayea

Questhelper downloads will lower.
Thottbott, sites like that will see a slow decline in hits.

I expect Blizzard to implement more UI changes, with other popular add ons.

Hunter pet aspect bars.
Xperl Frames ( Maybe )

Plus many others

And as far as this information goes, I agree with it. But would also like the addition of being able to toggle it off. But with Blizzard having to put so many quest locations in the game, from level 1 - level 80. I cannot see that becoming an option.

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteronthebuses

i live on QH and tomtom but iam been laggy enough i only use the once i use the most that would be peggle recount and QH unless they are giving an upgrade to the current QH i am sticking with my current one its enough hassle updating my QH on patch day QH sometimes gets it wrong true like the holiday quest some the beginer quest in NR or the dailys quest specificly the argent tournament QH thhen i just have to go teh extra mile of reading the quest and maybe asking around a bit. i havent been to thottbot in year and a half i onyl go to wow head to look up a piece of gear or get the location of teh elders or bonefires i never turn of my QH ever when i do a daily i did a 100 times or a regular quest i just go to the location i see no reason to turn of the QH for it i dont really see how this is diffrent they are not forcing you to get if you want a chalange dont get the new version once you get it i see no reason to turn it of

June 26, 2009 | Unregistered Commentercocopuff

@johnjohn

The equipment manager in game is WAY WAY better then outfitter. By leaps and bounds. Besides the smooth transfer of the gear from the bag to the toon, it is safer in the sense of "you really cant trust add ons completely".

And just drag the icon for that specific set to a hot key.
I have several dif sets and wep set ups set to hot keys in conjuction with specs etc...so the gear sets DO CHANGE OUT JUST FINE, not to mention alot smoother and without the headache of an add on.

And as far as changing 1 piece of gear goes. Stop being so FRIGGIN LAZY, go back in and just click the 3 button pushes it takes to make the new piece part of the set.

And OMG, IF YOUR CHANGING A PIECE SOOOO OFTEN THAT YOU CANT CLICK THE DAMN BUTTONS TO SWITCH IT OUT THEN I GUESS YOUR THER MAN. LOL. But we both know your not the man and we klnow your changing a piece now and again. Lets face it johnjohn, your just plain lazy.

Love it. I was using Questhelper anyways. Anything that can cut down on addons is a plus. I've hit a few walls in the past with addon conflicts and it's not cool. Include it.

If almost eveyone installs an addon it's now a feature anyways, they might as well throw it in the code. I still took time to smell the roses even though I used the addon.

Unfortunately for most folks (even myself on occasion) the game is about leveling or loot. Not questing. I came into the game just as BC came out. I can't tell you how many times i heard, "What you're doing doesn't matter just get to 70/80" Guess they might as well change the name from "Quests" to "Tasks" then. ;)

June 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThurogh

@Reeper

How can you say that Blizz EM is better than Oufitter??? (Maybe I've missed sarcasm there)

Outfitter automatically switches gear when you enter PvP places (for example WG or a battleground). Even does it when you're at the bank and your pvp gear is in the bank when you manually switch to Pvp setup.
It can automatically change your display options (for example if your cloak/helm doesn't match the rest of your gear in just one set you wear it can be switched off for just that set).
It has it's own bar available, so doesn't take up hot bar buttons/keys.
Its pretty much essential for dual-spec hybrids (not so much for dps/dps dualspec) for heal/dps/dpsraid config switching (in my shaman's case) and dps/tank (in my DK config).
Configure a suit of sets for resistances (Arcane for Vexallus back at 70, Frost for Sapphiron or the Prince in UK Achievement) where only the differences are kept. (Boots/robes/belt/hittrinket changes but all else stays the same). And even does a good job of working these out for itself.
Automatically switches depending on environment (for example switches belt to Azure Belt (+15% swim speed) when you go swimming).
In no way is BlizzEM better than Outfitter.

June 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPegraath

oh im sure that blizzard will make an option to turn it off as it would make sense to do so

blizzard usually does that for its UI options

me-i use questhelper but i am willing to give blizzard new QH like system a try and form a opinion about it

June 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDoiran

i was content with them just adding the quest objectives underneath the appropriate mobs. Nothing like wondering if you are in the right area killing things trying to get aomse low drop rate quest item.

June 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDaVoid

I see no one has mentioned the addon Carbonite yet. I recently found this addon and officially love it. I still use Lightheaded for the wowhead quest comments but have done away with several other addons. Carbonite does a little Recount, all of QuestHelper (and is customizable), replaces the nearly useless default map with a highly useful version, watches for enemy players (and sees them before you do), marks areas for your quests with color and puts a marker at the edge closest to you that when moused over will tell what quest that area is for, has a better quest tracking window which even tracks some achievements (like the Nothing Boring about Borean type), replaces (99%) one like Armory (just need guild bank listings), Cartographer and Gatherer herb and mine sites included and can be tracked whether up or not (then marked if you are using "find herb" or "find minerals").

It's cool that Blizzard is putting in the stuff but I do hope that it ends up being an "option" instead of default as I would like to continue using my Carbonite to handle everything and would turn off the option if it were given.
